Book Plastic Surgery in Wars Disasters and Civilian Life

Download or read book Plastic Surgery in Wars Disasters and Civilian Life written by Anthony Roberts and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The specialty of plastic surgery was developed and named by Sir Harold Gillies following his work between the two world wars reconstructing severely damaged servicemen from the First World War. Sir Harold went on to inspire and train other surgeons from around the world. Among them was his cousin Sir Archibald McIndoe, who in the Second World War set up the unit at East Grinstead Hospital which looked after severely burned airmen and some other servicemen. The airmen themselves set up the famous Guinea Pig Club which gave enormous social and often financial support to the severely injured. After the Second World War specialized burn units were created throughout the UK, including one at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where Anthony Roberts served. After the number of war injuries had reduced, the burn unit for all three services was set up at RAF Halton, a few miles from Stoke Mandeville. A close relationship between the hospitals developed which led to military surgeons being posted to Stoke Mandeville for training in the care of burns and an introduction to plastic surgery. Most doctors will never be involved in a disaster during their working lives. Anthony Roberts was involved in treating casualties from the Bradford City football stadium fire in 1985 that claimed 56 lives and resulted in hundreds more being injured, many of them with severe burns. It had a major effect on him, and on all those involved. It started his appearances on the media and his overseas visits to other countries to talk about it. And subsequently he was asked to join and to lead other international efforts to provide help. He led the first British team from Stoke Mandeville that gave aid in Sarajevo during the war. He returned several times and has also given aid in three other war zones and six major disasters. Because of this involvement in all these situations Professor Roberts taught junior trainee surgeons from the three British services and those of several foreign countries. As well as his military involvement, Anthony Roberts spent sixteen years working with the Royal Protection Group at State occasions, and thirty years working as a motor racing track doctor including at Formula One level, providing immediate and vital treatment to drivers who suffered serious injuries and burns following accidents on the track and to spectators. There have been enormous changes in the specialty over the past fifty years and a detailed view of these is given in an absorbing account of this life-enhancing surgery by one who served on the frontline in difficult and dangerous situations around the world.

Book Pioneers in Plastic Surgery

Download or read book Pioneers in Plastic Surgery written by David Tolhurst and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of short accounts of the lives and works of surgeons who began to use techniques in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that were to form the basis of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and give rise to the specialty of plastic surgery. Descriptions of the intricate and novel surgical operations undertaken by these pioneers are included, but the emphasis is above all on stories of widely varying and fascinating characters, from the strange or eccentric, such as Hippolyte Morestin, to the serious or ambitious and a few, such as the Dutchman Johannes Esser and the legendary Sir Howard Gillies, who were accomplished in other fields, including business, sport and art. It is related how the two World Wars played a key role in the development of new techniques and how the endeavors of the pioneers were sometimes rejected by obstructive or abusive colleagues, impacting on careers and reputations. Pioneers in Plastic Surgery will appeal to all with an interest in the history of the discipline and the figures who shaped its birth and growth.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present Status of Plastic Surgery About the Ear, Face and Neck Division; 1. As results of war injuries. 2. In civil life. a. From diseases. b. Injuries. c. Congenital. d. Cosmetic. e. Psychic or imaginary. I. Plastics in War Injuries: Owing to the results from severe wounds and diseases of so many men in the World's War, there was and is a great demand tor physicians and surgeons to correct and reconstruct these defects. Cases requiring plastic surgery about the head, face and neck, make up a very large portion, although comparatively a small proportion of Americans as to those of the other nations who were in the fight since 1914 and 1915. During the years of 1915-16-17 I presented papers before the Chicago Odontographic Society, Illinois Dental, Chicago Oto-Laryn-gologic Society, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Oto-Laryngology, Dominion Medical Association and Alabama State Association in which I urged oto-laryngologists, opthalmologists and oral surgeons of America to turn their attention to the training of plastic surgery in order that when the time came (I was certain it would come) they would be ready to do their part. Book Miracle Man of the Western Front

Download or read book Miracle Man of the Western Front written by Hagop Martin Deranian and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the intense fighting that marked World War I in Europe, an Armenian-American volunteer dentist quickly became known for his skill in treating the disfiguring facial injuries suffered by large numbers of British soldiers. Working originally under primitive conditions in makeshift hospitals near the battlefields of France, Varaztad H. Kazanjian exhibited a humane concern combined with innovative medical procedures that established his reputation and marked his subsequent career as a founder of the modern practice of plastic surgery. In recognition of his war service, Dr. Kazanjian became known as "the miracle man of the Western Front" and was invested by England's King George V in the most distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George. Other honors followed as Dr. Kazanjian returned to the United States, where he continued his education and went on to a brilliant career as a surgeon, teacher at Harvard, and author of scientific articles. This biography traces the many influences that contributed to the remarkable success of the young man who fled from massacres in Ottoman Armenia to the United States in 1895. From modest beginnings in Worcester, Massachusetts, Kazanjian managed to enter Harvard Dental School. He went on to serve in World War I, earn a medical degree, and make remarkable advances in plastic surgery. He is remembered not only for his medical innovations and accomplishments, but also as a kind and modest person, "the gentle genius of plastic surgery."--Adapted from book jacket.

Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed history of plastic surgery procedures and their development from the ancient world, through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, up to World War II. The origin of plastic surgery is essentially the story of wound management – the frequent struggle that primitive man engaged in to heal his injuries. The narrative chronicles the rise and fall – and rise again – of the discipline through the centuries. It illustrates the birth of modern reconstructive and aesthetic techniques and emphasizes the ingenuity that plastic surgeons demonstrated to improve wound defects and refine facial disfigurements of various origins, congenital or acquired. In addition, the work underscores the enormous impact that the study of human anatomy had on the evolution of surgery. Chapters discuss the birth and spread of aesthetic surgery, seldom referenced in modern scientific writing. Richly illustrated with hundreds of images drawn from the personal collection of the primary author, the book is an outstanding contribution to the annals of surgery. Not only does it honor the publications and artworks that have recorded these unique achievements, it also recognizes the great innovators of the past whose reconstructive and aesthetic work forms the basis of today’s surgical successes. Plastic Surgery – An Illustrated History is a must-have resource for plastic, maxillofacial and aesthetic surgeons. Any student of surgery, medical history, or medical illustration will be interested in this work.

Book excerpt: "Fascinating-a terrific read combining meticulous historical research with compelling personal stories." -Kelly Parsons, MD, author of Doing Harm and Under the Knife. The story of modern plastic surgery began in the trenches of World War I. Innovative surgeons invented life-altering methods to restore the victims of rifles and grenades, and soon founded a new specialty known as plastic surgery. With every decade their ingenuity devised new innovations that pushed the entire field of medicine forward. From kidney transplants to breast implants to facelifts to finger reattachments, this is the story of the birth, growth and amazing triumphs of the past century of plastic surgery. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: R. Barrett Noone, MD, is a former U.S. Air Force surgeon, past president of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and the first Executive Director/CEO of The American Board of Plastic Surgery. During his half-century of learning, teaching, and practicing plastic surgery atthe University of Pennsylvania and its affiliate hospitals, he became a pioneer in the development of the concepts and techniques of breast reconstruction at the time of mastectomy. He lives with his wife, Barbara, in suburban Philadelphia. "Dr. Noone traces the evolution of the surgical correction of deformity, insightfully emphasizing not an imperfection's size, but rather its meaning to the patient." -Mark B. Constantian, MD, plastic surgeon and author of Childhood Abuse, Body Shame, and Addictive Plastic Surgery: The Face of Trauma. "Through the telling of inspiring patient stories, Dr. Noone demonstrates how creativity and innovation have shaped plastic surgery and restored peoples' lives." -Richard Redett, MD, Professor and Chair, Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
