Book Hydrogen rich Gas Production from Plasmatron Reforming of Biofuels

Download or read book Hydrogen rich Gas Production from Plasmatron Reforming of Biofuels written by Kamal Hadidi and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bio-mass, as a renewable resource can potentially be converted into economically attractive fuels for transportation uses. Several processes have been considered for the reformation of biomass into hydrogen. They include fast pyrolysis, catalytic steam reforming, catalytic pyrolysis and supercritical water reforming. However, these technologies can not be used for onboard applications. An alternative approach is to use on-board generation of hydrogen. The plasmatron technology being developed at MIT for reformation of a wide range of fuels into synthesis gas (hydrogen and carbon monoxide) uses special low current plasmas. Vegetable oils and ethanol have been used in a plasmatron reformer to generate synthesis gas. Corn, canola, and soybean oils and ethanol have been reformed at different oxygen to carbon ratios and at power levels of 700 and 200 watts with a frequency of 200 to 260 kHz. In the case of ethanol, some of the oxygen required for the reformation is provided by the fuel itself. Both homogeneous plasma reforming (non-catalytic) and catalytic plasma reformer have been evaluated. Hydrogen yields of close to 80% have been achieved during catalytic reformation of corn and soybean oils and ethanol. Canola oil catalytic reformation yielded 60% of hydrogen. Other major compounds of the reformat gas are carbon monoxide and light hydrocarbons such as CH4 and C2H4.

Download or read book Onboard Plasmatron Generation of Hydrogen Rich Gas for Diesel Engine Exhaust Aftertreatment and Other Applications written by Leslie Bromberg and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diesel plasmatron reformer technology can provide substantial throughputs without the need of using a catalyst The use of the special plasma facilitates robust non-catalytic conversion of diesel fuel into hydrogen rich gas with hydrogen yields that could be sufficient for NOx trap regeneration applications. Higher yields can be obtained with the use of a catalyst. Plasmatron reformers could also be used for manufacturing of ethene, which could be useful as a selective reducing agent. In addition, plasmatron reformer technology can be used for converting a range of biofuels into hydrogen rich gas. These fuels include various oils. This capability may improve the prospects for use of renewable fuels in a variety of vehicular applications. This paper discussed the status of plasmatron diesel fuel reformers and possible applications to diesel engine exhaust aftertreatment. Keywords: reforms; hydrogen; emissions; diesel; biofuels.

Book Plasmatron Fuel Reformer Development and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle Applications

Download or read book Plasmatron Fuel Reformer Development and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle Applications written by Leslie Bromberg and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (cont.) Both noncatalytic and catalytic (with a catalyst downstream from a homogeneous reforming zone) have been studied. Onboard conversion of biofuels into hydrogen rich gas opens up a range of opportunities for reducing petroleum consumption. The plasmatron response has been determined using real time gas analysis techniques. For cold start, the response of a plasmatron fuel reformer using homogeneous reforming was faster than that from a plasmatron fuel reformer that included a catalyst. In addition, hydrogen production during warm start has also been studied. This mode of operation could be particularly relevant to some aftertreatment applications, where the hydrogen rich gas needs to be produced in short, frequent pulses. Concepts have been developed for optimal regeneration of Diesel Particulate Filters, using hydrogen rich gas. The goal is the simplification of the aftertreatment system, increasing reliability, fuel penalty minimization, and minimization of fuel reformer system requirements.

Book EMISSIONS REDUCTIONS USING HYDROGEN FROM PLASMATRON FUEL CONVERTERS

Download or read book EMISSIONS REDUCTIONS USING HYDROGEN FROM PLASMATRON FUEL CONVERTERS written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantial progress in engine emission control is needed in order to meet present and proposed regulations for both spark ignition and diesel engines. Tightening regulations throughout the world reflect the ongoing concern with vehicle emissions. Recently developed compact plasmatron fuel converters have features that are suitable for onboard production of hydrogen for both fuel pretreatment and for exhaust aftertreatment applications. Systems that make use of these devices in conjunction with aftertreatment catalysts have the potential to improve significantly prospects for reduction of diesel engine emissions. Plasmatron fuel converters can provide a rapid response compact means to transform efficiently a wide range of hydrocarbon fuels into hydrogen rich gas. They have been used to reform natural gas [Bromberg1], gasoline [Green], diesel [Bromberg2] and hard-to-reform biofuels [Cohn1] into hydrogen rich gas (H2 + CO). The development of these devices has been pursued for the purpose of reducing engine exhaust pollutants by providing hydrogen rich gas for combustion in spark ignition and possibly diesel engines, as shown in Figure 1 [Cohn2]. Recent developments in compact plasmatron reformer design at MIT have resulted in substantial decreases in electrical power requirements. These new developments also increase the lifetime of the electrodes.

Book Options for Reforming the Renewable Fuel Standard

Download or read book Options for Reforming the Renewable Fuel Standard written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the time since the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) was first passed into law in 2005 and later expanded in 2007, domestic biofuels production has risen and renewable fuels have increased as a percentage of the total U.S. transportation fuels supply. At the same time, persistent challenges in courts and in the implementation of enacted laws, as well as significant changes in the U.S. energy production landscape, have kept the RFS at the forefront of energy policy discussions. The Environmental Protection Agency's additional delay of the 2014 rule and the associated compliance volumes is a further indicator that improvements to the RFS are needed. However, experience with the program has not led to a consensus on what, if anything, should be done. The Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) chose to explore a middle ground where we think tangible progress can be made to reform, but not repeal, the RFS. Specifically, in order to support constructive dialogue in this ongoing debate, BPC's Energy Project convened an advisory group of diverse stakeholders who agreed to discuss legislative and/or regulatory reforms that could put the RFS on a stable footing. The advisory group met three times over the course of 2014, and their discussions, deliberations, agreements, and disagreements informed the creation of 40 policy options to improve the RFS. Although these options do not represent the consensus of the advisory group, they are intended as a first step in exploring the ways in which constructive reforms could create a more robust and effective RFS program.
