Since Explorer 1 discovered the Earth's radiation belts more than thirty years ago, there have been many opportunities to show the value of in-situ observations over remote-sensing when it comes to an understanding of the space plasma environment. When one of the inner solar system's regular visitors was due to make its once-in-a-lifetime appearance in 1986 the opportunity was too important to be missed. For not only is comet Halley one of the most reliable comets it is also nearly two orders of magnitude larger than any other comet with a known period. Well before there was any visible trace of Halley's comet in the night sky, three of the big four space agencies were banking on that reliability and were preparing five spacecraft to make the journey to intercept the comet. Such activity acted as a spur to the ingenuity of the fourth agency who found a way to redirect one of their long-serving spacecraft and to win the race to be the first to a comet, albeit the smaller, and at the time virtually unknown, Giacobini-Zinner. Although a healthy spirit of competition infused the scientific and engineering teams working on the project at various levels, what mattered in the end was the global cooperation between the agencies and many ground-based observers which for example, enabled Giotto to reach the comet with one-tenth of the targetting error that had originally been predicted.

After the ?resentation of the Crafoord Prize Laureate, Prof. J . A. Van Allen, and his specially invited lecture: "Active Experiments in Magnetospheric Physics" follows in these proceedings two papers on the achievements of magnetospheric research hitherto. The main part of the proceedings (8 papers) deal with the main theme of the Symposium: How we shall carry on magnetospheric research in the future. The Symposium was organized by five members of the Academy representing the field of space physics: Lars Block (Stockholm), Rolf Bostrom (Uppsala), Kerstin Fredga (Stockholm), Carl-Gunne Fiilthammar (Stockholm) and Bengt Hultqvist (Kiruna, Chairman).

In addition to being stimulated by an excellent series of talks on the up-to-the minute advances in our subject, it was a pleasure to make new friendships from so many countries and to learn, in particular, of the Solar Physics being done in India which has a great tradition and is of a high standard. Furthermore, we enjoyed hearing about Indian culture and appreciating its beauty, especially on our day's tour into the countryside to visit some Hindu and Jain temples.

With increasing sophistication in both observational and modeling techniques has come the desire to overcome these limitations and strive for a more unified description of these systems. On the observational side, we have recently acquired routine access to diagnostic information on the lowest energy bulk plasma, completing our view of the plasma and making possible comparisons with magnetohydrodynamic calculations of plasma moments. On the theoretical side, rising computational capabilities and shrewdly designed computational techniques have permitted the first attacks on the global structure of the magnetosphere. Similar advances in the modeling of neutral atmospheric circulation suggest an emergent capability to globally treat the coupling between plasma and neutral gases. Simultaneously, computer simulation has proven to be a very useful tool for understanding magnetospheric behaviors on smaller space and time scales.
