Book Hall Current Effects on Tearing Modes in Rotating Reverse Field Plasmas

Download or read book Hall Current Effects on Tearing Modes in Rotating Reverse Field Plasmas written by Jay Kappraff and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of rigid body rotation, Hall effect, and position of the outer retaining wall on the growth rates of tearing modes has been investigated for a family of reversed field Theta pinch equilibria. Parameters sensitive to the physics of a boundary line surrounding the neutral surface of the plasma are identified and used to show how stability to tearing modes is enhanced by rotation of the plasma column in a preferred direction. Stabilization of the tearing modes is also found to be sensitive to well position and particle density and it is found that the tearing modes may even be quenched at critical values of the angular velocity for outer wall positions sufficiently close to the plasma vacuum interface. Book Some Consequences of Rotation in Theta pinch generated Plasma Confined by a Longitudinal Magnetic Field

Download or read book Some Consequences of Rotation in Theta pinch generated Plasma Confined by a Longitudinal Magnetic Field written by Howard M. Stainer and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical study was made of the characteristics of structured plasma puffs produced in a two-coil theta-pinch gun. The puffs are fired into a drift tube containing a longitudinal magnetic field, and their subsequent behavior is analyzed. Electron-electron and ion-ion collision times are short enough so that scalar pressures (P = nkT) can be used. Ion-electron collision times, however, are of the duration of the experiment or longer, allowing the use of two-fluid moment equations. An idealized model for the plasma puffs is proposed in which the ion fluid rotates as a rigid body in one direction about the longitudinal axis, and the electron fluid rotates in the opposite direction. This high-Beta model yields self-consistent equilibrium density and magnetic field profiles, stemming from a balance among thermal, magnetic, centrifugal, and electrostatic forces, that are compatible with observation. It is shown that double magnetic pick-up loop signals can be analyzed to ascertain the temperature, peak density, angular momentum, etc., of the plasma as it travels down the tube, and a sample calculation is presented to indicate the probable evolution of a typical puff. Thus, the model provides a self-consistent high-Beta approach to the problem of plasma and magnetic-field interaction. (Author).

Book Plasma Rotation Dynamo and Nonlinear Coupling in the Reversed Field Pinch

Download or read book Plasma Rotation Dynamo and Nonlinear Coupling in the Reversed Field Pinch written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two important effects of MHD fluctuations in the RFP and tokamak are current generation (the dynamo effect) and mode locking. In the T1 and MST RFP experiments new results reveal the mode dynamics underlying these phenomena. In T1 the effect of specific magnetic Fourier modes on the current density profile is evident. In MST, the MHD dynamo term ([delta]v x[delta]B) is measured in the plasma edge, and found to account for the time dependence of the edge current throughout a sawtooth cycle. As edge resistivity is increased in T1 the fluctuation amplitude increases to maintain the dynamo-driven current, as expected from MHD computation. The modes responsible for the dynamo often lock to the local magnetic field error at the vertical cut in MST. The plasma rotation velocity has been measured with a fast Doppler spectrometer to a time resolution of 1[mu]s. The plasma rotation and mode phase velocity are remarkably well-correlated, with both slowing, in the presence of an impulsive field error, in a 100[mu]s timescale.
