Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor (EPR) has been performed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for the Energy Research and Development Administration Division of Magnetic Fusion Energy (ERDA-DMFE) over a two-year period. This second year's work builds integrally upon the earlier efforts. Therefore, the following format has been adopted for this report. Part 1, entitled ''EPR Summary, '' contains a brief discussion of all facets of the work done this year. The technical areas discussed in Part 1 include the Reference Design itself; the underlying plasma engineering base; the supporting technical evaluations in the areas of magnet systems, nuclear engineering, and general engineering; and the major research, development, and demonstration needs that have been identified. Each of these areas is then discussed fully in separate technical memoranda, which have been issued as Parts 2-6. Where appropriate, the essential elements of previous interim reports have been included in order to provide a self-consistent, readable report. These earlier reports, Basic Considerations and Initiation of Studies (ORNL/TM-4853), EPR Scoping Study (ORNL/TM-5038), and EPR Reference Design (ORNL/TM-5042), can be consulted for a more complete discussion of the entire study.

Book Oak Ridge Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor Study Scoping Report

Download or read book Oak Ridge Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor Study Scoping Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the scoping studies performed as the initial part of the program to produce a conceptual design for a Tokamak Experimental Power Reactor (EPR). The EPR as considered in this study is to employ all systems necessary for significant electric power production at continuous high duty cycle operation; it is presently scheduled to be the final technological step before a Demonstration Reactor Plant (Demo). The scoping study tasks begin with an exploration and identification of principal problem areas and then concentrate on consideration and evaluation of alternate design choices for each of the following major systems: Plasma Engineering and Physics, Nuclear, Electromagnetics, Neutral Beam Injection, and Tritium Handling. In addition, consideration has been given to the integration of these systems and requirements arising out of their incorporation into an EPR. One intent of this study is to document the paths explored in search of the appropriate EPR characteristics. To satisfy this intent, the explorations are presented in chart form outlining possible options in key areas with extensive supporting footnotes. An important result of the scoping study has been the development and definition of an EPR reference design to serve as (1) a common focus for the continuing design study and (2) a guide for associated development programs. In addition, the study has identified research and development requirements essential to facilitate the successful conceptual design, construction, and operation of an EPR.

Download or read book ORNL EPR Study written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-year preliminary design study of a tokamak experimental power reactor has been completed by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The major engineering features, plasma physics characteristics, and technological requirements of the device are discussed. Plasma confinement is provided in a toroidal chamber of major radius, R/sub o/ = 6.75 m and minor radius, a = 2.25 m. The toroidal magnetic field strength is 4.8 T.A unique poloidal magnetic field system creates the fields required for plasma equilibrium and stability. The power extraction system is centered around the blanket, which absorbs approximately 90 percent of the energy produced in the plasma. The operating characteristics and nuclear performance of the system are given. The results of the study indicate a low benefit-to-cost ratio for this design. Recent developments have suggested that some of the design constraints were too restrictive. The advisability of a large scale test of the ideas linked to these developments has become apparent. To this end, ORNL has started the design of a high-.beta. tokamak. The basis for the high power density device is discussed.

Book Magnetic Control of Tokamak Plasmas

Download or read book Magnetic Control of Tokamak Plasmas written by Marco Ariola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete treatment of work done to resolve the problems of position-, current-, and shape-control of plasma in tokamak-type (toroidal) devices being studied as a potential means of commercial energy production by nuclear fusion. Modelling and control are both detailed, allowing non-expert readers to understand the control problem. Starting from the magneto-hydro-dynamic equations, all the steps needed for the derivation of plasma state-space models are enumerated with frequent recall of the basic concepts of electromagnetics. The control problem is then described, beginning with the control of current and position—vertical and radial—control and progressing to the more challenging shape control. The solutions proposed vary from simple PIDs to more sophisticated MIMO controllers. The second edition of Magnetic Control of Tokamak Plasmas contains numerous updates and a substantial amount of completely new material covering areas such as: • modelling and control of resistive wall modes—the most important non-axisimmetric mode; • the isoflux approach for shape control; • a general approach for the control of limiter plasmas; • the use of inner vessel coils for vertical stabilization; and • significantly enhanced treatment of plasma-shape control at JET, including experimental results and introducing a method implemented for operation in the presence of current saturations. Whenever possible, coverage of the various topics is rounded out with experimental results obtained on currently existing tokamaks. The book also includes a presentation of the typical actuators and sensors used for control purposes in tokamaks. Some mathematical details are given in the appendices for the interested reader. The ideas formulated in this monograph will be of great practical help to control engineers, academic researchers and graduate students working directly with problems related to the control of nuclear fusion. They will also stimulate control researchers interested more generally in the advanced applications of the discipline. Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Book Final Report of the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U S Burning Plasma Research

Download or read book Final Report of the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U S Burning Plasma Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusion offers the prospect of virtually unlimited energy. The United States and many nations around the world have made enormous progress toward achieving fusion energy. With ITER scheduled to go online within a decade and demonstrate controlled fusion ten years later, now is the right time for the United States to develop plans to benefit from its investment in burning plasma research and take steps to develop fusion electricity for the nation's future energy needs. At the request of the Department of Energy, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized a committee to develop a strategic plan for U.S. fusion research. The final report's two main recommendations are: (1) The United States should remain an ITER partner as the most cost-effective way to gain experience with a burning plasma at the scale of a power plant. (2) The United States should start a national program of accompanying research and technology leading to the construction of a compact pilot plant that produces electricity from fusion at the lowest possible capital cost.

Download or read book Burning Plasma written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-04-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant advances have been made in fusion science, and a point has been reached when we need to decide if the United States is ready to begin a burning plasma experiment. A burning plasmaâ€"in which at least 50 percent of the energy to drive the fusion reaction is generated internallyâ€"is an essential step to reach the goal of fusion power generation. The Burning Plasma Assessment Committee was formed to provide advice on this decision. The committee concluded that there is high confidence in the readiness to proceed with the burning plasma step. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), with the United States as a significant partner, was the best choice. Once a commitment to ITER is made, fulfilling it should become the highest priority of the U.S. fusion research program. A funding trajectory is required that both captures the benefits of joining ITER and retains a strong scientific focus on the long-range goals of the program. Addition of the ITER project will require that the content, scope, and level of U.S. fusion activity be defined by program balancing through a priority-setting process initiated by the Office of Fusion Energy Science.
