Book Molybdenum Disulphide Lubrication

Download or read book Molybdenum Disulphide Lubrication written by A.R. Lansdown and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-05-28 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s and the early 1980s there was an enormous volume of research and development into the subject of molybdenum disulphide lubrication, much of which was supported by national governments for the benefit of defence, aviation or space activities. There were already some well-established practical guidelines for deciding when and how to use molybdenum disulphide, but there was still a considerable lack of universally-accepted theoretical understanding of some of the important and fundamental aspects of molybdenum disulphide technology. However, the state of knowledge was growing rapidly. In the past fifteen years the situation with regard to the technology of molybdenum disulphide lubrication has stabilised in many respects, and a measure of consensus has been reached about some of the mechanisms involved. The use of molybdenum disulphide has become routine in some industries, and there are many well-established and reputable commercial products available. Except in the high-technology field of physical deposition techniques, especially sputtering, the output of new research publications has fallen from perhaps two hundred a year in the 1970s to fewer than ten a year in the 1990s. In spite of this maturing of the subject, it is clear that there are still many aspects in which disagreements persist about the mechanisms involved, and which as a result are unclear or misunderstood among current, and perhaps even more importantly, potential users. One of the primary objectives of this book is to analyse the various aspects of molybdenum disulphide lubrication technology about which there are still disagreements or controversy, and to attempt to come to firm conclusions about some of the mechanisms involved. In particular, it will place emphasis on the importance and effects of burnishing and film consolidation.

Book Tribology and Characterization of Surface Coatings

Download or read book Tribology and Characterization of Surface Coatings written by Sarfraj Ahmed and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRIBOLOGY AND CHARACTERIZATION OF SURFACE COATINGS The book provides updated information on the friction and wear behavior of coatings used in various industrial applications. Surface modification is a cost-effective process of increasing the life of components so that the whole device need not be changed if the surface is worn out. The tribological behavior of biological implants is currently an active topic and a thorough discussion is one of the book’s features. Tribology and Characterization of Surface Coatings explores key issues which are important in the research and development of surface coatings by providing updated information on friction and wear behavior of coatings used in different industrial applications. It covers the various coating deposition techniques, tribological response of nanocomposite coatings, multilayer hardfacing, and wear testing methods for coatings at nanoscale. The use of nanostructures may alter the tribological, characterization, and mechanical properties of the materials. Thermal spraying is the most widely used technique in industry for the deposition of coatings and their tribological properties need to be determined. This book also includes the recent trends in biotribology and the materials used in implants to counter the abrasive wear. Audience The book will serve as a reference to researchers, scientists, academicians, industrial engineers, and students who work in the fields of materials/polymer science and mechanical engineering. Apart from their applications to aerospace and electronics industries, the coatings are also used in the field of biomedical engineering.

Book Molybdenum Disulfide as a Lubricant And Catalyst in Adaptive Nanocomposite Coatings Preprint

Download or read book Molybdenum Disulfide as a Lubricant And Catalyst in Adaptive Nanocomposite Coatings Preprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanocomposite YSZ-Ag-Mo-MoS2 with different MoS2 additions (0-100 atomic percent) coatings were deposited with a hybrid pulsed laser/magnetron sputtering/filtered cathodic arc process. Wear testing was performed from 25-700 degrees C for each of the coatings. Electron microscopy and other characterization techniques were used to examine the surfaces and wear tracks of the coatings to determine the mechanisms resulting in the measured tribological properties. Adaptive coatings containing 8 atomic percent MoS2 demonstrated a friction coefficient of 0.2 throughout the temperature range examined here, compared to 0.4 for YSZ-Ag-Mo with no MoS2. Characterization of the YSZ-Ag-Mo-8%MoS2 coating revealed that MoS2 and silver provided lubrication at temperatures less or equal 300 degrees C, while silver molybdate phases and MoO3 were lubricious at higher temperatures. Silver molybdate was not observed in the coatings containing 0% MoS2. The role of sulfur in the formation of silver molybdate is briefly discussed.

Book An Investigation of Material Properties and Tribological Performance of Magnetron Sputtered Thin Film Coatings

Download or read book An Investigation of Material Properties and Tribological Performance of Magnetron Sputtered Thin Film Coatings written by Harpal Singh and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is divided into two categories based upon lubrication functionality and its application. The categories are: Dry/Solid film lubrication with thin film coatings and Fluid film lubrication with thin film coatings. Thin film coatings examined in this work were deposited using closed field unbalanced magnetron sputtering and RF-DC coupled magnetron sputtering systems. In Dry/Solid film lubrication, the mechanical, structural and tribological properties of two Molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) based coatings are examined and evaluated. Among the two coatings, one coating is doped with Ti (Ti-MoS2) and the other is a combination of metal, lubricant and oxide (Sb2O3/Au - MoS2). These coatings are known to provide low friction in vacuum environments. The goal of this work was to evaluate friction and wear performance of MoS2 doped coatings in unidirectional and reciprocating sliding contact under different environmental conditions. Sliding contact results showed friction and wear dependence on temperature and humidity. The formation and removal of transfer films and the recrystallization and reorientation of basal layers on the steel counterface was observed as the mechanism for low friction. Structural analysis revealed a relationship between the microstructural properties and tribological performance. It was also observed that the addition of dopants (Ti, Au, Sb2O3) improved the mechanical properties as compared to pure MoS2 coatings. Further, the rolling contact performance of the coatings was measured on a five ball on rod tribometer and a Thrust bearing tribometer under vacuum and air environments. The rolling contact experiments indicated that life of the rolling components depend on the amount of material present between the contacts. Fluid film lubrication with thin film coatings investigates the possibilities to improve the performance and durability of tribological components when oils and thin films are synergistically coupled. In this work, the ability of a Diamond Like Carbon coating to increase the durability of contacting surfaces under boundary lubrication were studied. The performance of highly hydrogenated Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) was evaluated in a mixed sliding and rolling contact. Experimental results show significant improvement in fatigue life of steel specimens after coating with a highly hydrogenated Diamond Like Carbon coating. The improved fatigue life is attributed to the coating microstructure and the mechanical properties.

Book Evaluation of Tribological Response of Molydenum sic Disulphide based Coatings to Varying Environments

Download or read book Evaluation of Tribological Response of Molydenum sic Disulphide based Coatings to Varying Environments written by Matthew A. Hamilton and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Molybdenum disulphide-based coatings are the standard solid lubricant coatings for mechanisms intended to operate in low earth orbit. These coatings are known to provide low friction in a high-vacuum environment. In my study, a variety of hard metallic and solid lubricant coatings were tested in a self-mated configuration at temperatures ranging from -80°C to 180°C to evaluate the friction response to varying temperature. The tests were performed using a pin-on-disk tribometer inside an environment chamber at fixed normal load and sliding velocity. Systems where the contact was dominated by plastic deformation and wear debris generation showed no evidence of thermal sensitivity and had friction coefficients ranging from 0.2 to 0.9. However systems where motion was accommodated by interfacial sliding experienced as high as an order of magnitude increase in friction coefficient (0.02 to 0.2) as the temperature of the system was decreased from 180 to -80 degrees C. The low friction coefficients of many solid lubricant coatings have been attributed to interfacial sliding in the material. In these experiments, the goal was to prove the systems were interfacially sliding by analyzing the evolution of surface topography. The results indicated that for the MoS2-based coatings it took an average of 30 cycles to remove a single atomic layer of MoS2 (6 angstroms). This showed that interfacial sliding was occurring in a majority of the contact. The end goal of the study was to comment on the application specific performance of the coatings in a bushing-shaft configuration. In this system, the friction coefficient showed athermal behavior caused by severe wear in the contact area. Ultimately designers of space mechanisms will have to determine the severity of the tribological contact in order to estimate the fluctuations in friction coefficient that may be experienced by varying temperature.

Book Tribological Performance and Deformation of Sputter Deposited MoS2 Solid Lubricant Films During Sliding Wear and Indentation Contact

Download or read book Tribological Performance and Deformation of Sputter Deposited MoS2 Solid Lubricant Films During Sliding Wear and Indentation Contact written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructural aspects of the plastic deformation of sputter-deposited MoS2 solid lubricant films on 440C bearing steel are presented. The films were produced in three different laboratories using radio frequency, direct current, and radio frequency magnetron sources. Two-types of contacts were investigated: (1) sliding wear contact in a thrust-washer apparatus used to evaluate film tribological performance, and (2) brale indentation contact used to investigate cross-sectional morphology and adhesion. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the films. The as-deposited morphology was found to influence the initial nature of the wear debris and the load-bearing capabilities of the films. In many cases, a highly deformed region confined to the surface of the films was found. Applied stress reoriented crystallites and induced crystallization. The degree of both processes was related to the initial structure and the percentage of wear lifetime of the film.

Book On the Use of Statistical Analysis for Tribological Evaluation of a Solid Lubricant

Download or read book On the Use of Statistical Analysis for Tribological Evaluation of a Solid Lubricant written by Jiao Yang and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fretting wear is considered as a complex wear phenomenon related to interaction between two sliding bodies under very low displacement amplitude, which limits the lifetime of elements significantly. Solid lubricant is more and more applied in tribological applications to reduce friction and protect the substrate surface from fretting wear. The performance of coating depends on many factors such as running conditions, properties of substrate, counterbody and coating, and adhesion between coating and substrate. The objectives of this thesis are to discuss the friction and wear behavior of the coating under different running conditions, and to analyze the effect of test parameters on the friction coefficient and lifetime of the coating, which can be effectively helpful for the evaluation of quality of the coating. Fretting experiments are carried out to understand the relationships between the tribological behavior of a MoS2 based varnish coating and running conditions. The coating is investigated under different contact forces, different displacement amplitudes, different contact configurations, different coating positions, different substrates and different thicknesses. The rank of effect of factors is evaluated by the analysis of variance. Regression analysis is used to predict the performance of coatings under certain running conditions. The observation of evolution of wear scar is applied to explain the rank of factor and coefficients in the prediction equations. Furthermore, the reliability analysis is used to describe and predict the survival rate of coatings under certain running conditions. Finally, a linear model for lifetime is assessed in order to take into account variable displacement amplitude.
