Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plantation Rubber and the Testing of Rubber: With Plates and Diagrams Within the present decade the rubber industry has undergone great expansion. The chief impulse to this expansion came from the development of the automobile. This development produced a demand for rubber for the purpose of manufacturing tyres, which the supply of wild rubber was unable to meet, and which led to a vast expansion in the already-established plantation industry of the Eastern tropics. During the years 1909-10 the price of raw rubber rose to an unprecedently high level; and there followed a spectacular "boom" in rubber planting and a less spectacular boom in the manufacture of rubber goods, particularly of tyres. The extent to which the rubber industry has expanded during the present decade may be gathered from the fact that the world's production of raw rubber in 1917 (the last normal year) was 3.64 times as large as in 1910. This increased production is entirely accounted for by an increase in the production of plantation rubber, which grew in amount from a quantity forming in 1910 11.6 to a quantity forming in 1917 79.5 per cent of the total production. The increased production of raw rubber has been absorbed chiefly by the rubber manufacturing industry in the United States, which consumed 5.76 times as much raw rubber in 1917 as in 1910. The following table shows the salient statistics regarding the volume of raw rubber production from a time when plantation rubber began to be produced in noticeable quantities. The above statistics are represented graphically in Fig. I, at the back of the volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Testing and Grading of Wild and Plantation Rubbers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a search through the great number of papers in the scientific journals dealing with plantation and wild rubbers, one comes to the conclusion that the rubber technologists concerned with manufacturing operations would much prefer to purchase their natural rubber on the basis of specifications set up by scientific laboratory tests than from the results of the past and present-day methods of evaluation solely by superficial appearance. Ever since the beginning of the rubber industry, the natural-rubber broker has purchased crude rubber from the producer and sold it to the manufacturer on the basis of cleanliness and a few other rule-of-thumb tests or observations. This is a very peculiar situation because practically all of the other ingredients used in the manufacture of rubber products are purchased on the basis of specifications which are dependent on scientific laboratory tests. Also the final rubber products are usually sold on a performance or quality basis rather than on appearance alone. Except for cleanliness, the superficial appearance of a crude rubber has very little in common either with the intrinsic quality of the crude rubber or with the quality of the product made from it. Practically all uses for rubber are for products in the vulcanized state, so why should not the manufacturer be interested in purchasing his crude rubber on the basis of tests made on its vulcanizate? The present method of evaluating rubber on superficial appearance alone is, however, not altogether unwarranted or unsound. It involves an extremely simple and rapid procedure and does not require an expensive laboratory and scientifically-trained personnel. It operates on the assumption that if the crude rubber is clean, uniform in color, bubble-free, "rust"-free, and free from fungus formations, it probably has had extreme care in its preparation and will therefore exhibit its optimum physical and chemical properties. This assumption, however, obviously does not always hold true.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Estate Rubber: Its Preparation, Properties and Testing This book is a translation and extension of a treatise which appeared in Dutch in the beginning of 1919. The original Dutch edition was principally destined for the use of planters and of those directly interested inthe plantation rubber industry. We have thought it worth while to furnish the English edition with more figures and technical details which may be of interest to the rubber chemist, and to include the principal data from the already rather extensive literature on plantation-rubber. In order to give the reader an idea 'oi the present state of our knowledge on each subject we have added in small type reviews of the rather scattered and sometimes little known original sources from which we quoted. We have taken care only to cite such papers as we could consult ourselves, so as to avoid the errors in quotation and the incorrect conclusions still too common even in some of the best known textbooks. Completeness, of course, is almost unattainable in such work; still we have striven to bring the literature on each point together as fully as possible. Book The Preparation of Plantation Rubber Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Preparation of Plantation Rubber Classic Reprint written by Sidney Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preparation of Plantation Rubber Mr. Sidney morgan's work on Plantation Rubber in the East is so well known that he hardly needs introduction. An earlier book, published in 1914, by the Rubber Growers' Association, entitled The Preparation of Plantation Rubber, was well received and widely read. This book dealt in a very practical manner with problems with which the industry had to contend. A second edition was subsequently published. Both editions are now out of print. The present opportunity was therefore taken to revise the original work, with the result that it has been enlarged and practically rewritten. The information given is brought up-to-date, and covers the whole process of production, commencing with the planting of the tree, passing on to the collection, coagulation, and curing of the rubber, and concluding with the packing for export. In the course of his work for the Association, Mr. Morgan carried out a great deal of industrial research in rubber production, including lengthy experiments on tapping, the use of different coagulants and different conditions of coagulation, and also on varying modes of rolling, drying, and smoking rubber. He also went very fully into the types of construction and details of the machinery and buildings employed on estates.
