Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Physiology and Ecology The point of view and the methods of study first advanced in "Research Methods in Ecology" have proved so satisfactory in teaching as to make it desirable to embody them in a text-book. The present text has been based largely upon "Research Methods," though most of the matter is new or rewritten. The manner of treatment is essentially the same, but the subject-matter has been rearranged and broken up into a larger number of chapters. The plant is first considered as an individual, with respect to factor, function, and form, and then as a member of a plant group or formation. The reasons for regarding ecology and physiology as essentially the same have been given elsewhere, and need not be repeated here. An endeavor has been made to give the various parts of this vast field their proper importance. Since ecology and physiology are merged, it is manifestly impossible to give to either what would be regarded as a complete treatment by a specialist in either line. No attempt has been made to touch all the points in each, but it is thought that nothing really fundamental has been omitted. The book is intended for use with classes in second-year botany in college and university. In manuscript form, it has been in such use for two years with good results. Although the amount of laboratory and field work is large, it is possible to accomplish all of it in a course requiring 6-8 hours of laboratory time each week. This can be done only by careful planning on the art of both instructor and student, and for this reason the following suggestions are offered as aids. The instructor will find it imperative to plan in advance for the experiments for the whole year, in order that plants may be ready as needed. Seeds and fruits for the study of migration should be collected in the fall. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Plants: An Introduction to Botany and Plant Ecology The course of work followed in this book is directed, in the main, to the establishment of the fundamental principles of Plant Physiology. Plant Morphology receives a less extended treatment; but this aspect of the subject is freely introduced in the discussion of Plant Ecology, i. E. The relation of the structure and functions of plants to their habitat. More space has been devoted to Ecology than is usual in an ele mentary text-book, but the Author believes that this aspect of plant life gives to field work a more definite aim, and broadens the outlook of the student by linking up Botany with the study of climate, geology, and topography. Similarly, to avoid the weariness of lessons dealing merely with the comparison of forms, the Author has throughout treated the forms of roots, stems, and leaves in relation to their functions and to the habitat of the plant. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Plant Physiology Plant physiology is an inseparable part of botany. It is closely connected with the study of morphology and anatomy of plants, since without a sufficient knowledge of plant structure an effective study of physiology is hardly possible. Recently plant physiology has been forming connections not only with plant ecology and plant geography but also with taxonomy. Plant physiology is passing gradually from the study of activities common to all plants to a consideration of the physiological distinctions that exist between various groups or even species. Book A Laboratory Course in Plant Physiology

Download or read book A Laboratory Course in Plant Physiology written by William F. Ganong and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Course in Plant Physiology: Especially as a Basis for Ecology If the present book is found to have any merit in its particular field, it will consist chiefly in its practicability. With but few and clearly indicated exceptions, everything recommended in it has been repeatedly tested and found effective both by my students and myself. The book is the resultant of six years of effort and experiment directed to this end with classes of from eight to twelve students. The illustrations of the experiments are in every case from photographs of experiments in successful operation. Such pictures, while inferior in clearness of detail and perhaps in artistic effect to good drawings, have at least this conspicuous merit, that they may be accepted and followed with perfect confidence. In developing the course and the experiments herein recommended, I have tried to utilize, and, naturally, to improve upon, the best work done by others in the same lines. Little account is taken in these pages of the exact appliances and methods with which the classical work of plant physiology has been done, for the investigation phases of the subject lie without the scope of this work, and they are, moreover, summarized admirably in Pfeffer's great Handbook. But all phases of plant physiology utilizable for purposes of general education are meant to be included. Book Practical Text Book of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Text Book of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Daniel Trembly Macdougal and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical d104-Book of Plant Physiology The extension of knowledge in all departments of botany during the last few years has widened the application of the principles of physiology; and altered the relative importance of many phases of the subject. The most notable development consists of the universal recognition of the underlying and basal importance of the irritability of the organism; "that there is no vital process which is uninfluenced by stimuli, which permit, cause, restrict, or regulate the particular action in question." A second conception of no less importance is that of the intricate correlation existing between all of the activities of the vegetal organism, and the reciprocal interaction of all physiological stimuli. The arrangement of the subject in the following pages is an effort to place before the student a method by which a working knowledge of the physiological complex of the plant may be acquired. The disposition of the subject matter entailed by this treatment consists, briefly stated, in the study of the particular functions and properties of the organism, in connection with the agencies and forces which influence or initiate them, and a consideration of the general processes of plant life. To this end the first portion of the book, inclusive of chapters I. - VII., is devoted chiefly to the special forms of irritability exhibited by typical organisms, and the second part is taken up with a more critical consideration of the broader phases of the activity of the plant: a treatment of the subject well adapted to the convenience of the independent worker, and to the exigencies of instruction. Book Physiological Researches Vol 1

Download or read book Physiological Researches Vol 1 written by Burton Edward Livingston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiological Researches, Vol. 1: July, 1913 August, 1916 The experiments described in this paper had as their chief purpose to discover (a) whether the water content of a given soil at the time when plants growing therein become permanently wilted remains a constant when wilting occurs under widely varying environmental conditions, and can therefore be determined with accuracy by calculation from the known physical constants of the soil, and (b) whether there is a definite and constant relation between the water content of the plant and that of the soil at the time of wilting, under such varying conditions. The work was performed at the Desert Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution, at Tucson, Arizona, during the summer of 1911. The plants used were Zea mays L., Phaseolus vulgaris L., Xanthium commune Britton, Martynia louisiana Mill., and Physalis angulata var. Linkiana Gray. The chief results follow: 1. For large numbers of turgid individuals of the same age and species, the average water content of all the normal functioning leaves is approximately a constant under the midsummer conditions of southern Arizona. Departures of individual plants from the average normal foliar water content for the species were few and small in the five species studied. 2. Plants beginning to lose turgor in the youngest leaves show an average foliar water content which is fairly constant for the species and which bears a definite ratio to the average normal water content for turgid individuals of that species. 3. Temporary wilting of the younger foliage is of frequent occurrence and is conditional only upon a temporary, but more or less prolonged, maintenance of the rate of transpiration at a magnitude in excess of the rate of absorption for the same period; hence, this form of wilting is not related merely to the moisture content of the soil, but also to aerial conditions, especially to the evaporating power of the air and to the intensity of solar insolation. Book Experimental Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Experimental Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by D. T. Macdougal and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Plant Physiology The appreciation shown toward the translation of Oels' Pflanzenphysiologische Versuche prepared by the present writer, together with the comments and suggestions from laboratories in which it has been used, has led to the preparation of this manual, which it is hoped will conform somewhat more nearly to the needs of American students. The general form of Oels' manual has been retained, and many cuts from the translation and a few paragraphs of the text have been repeated here without indication of their origin. Only the more important and better established portions of the subject are treated, and these in the manner already in general use. With the rapid advance of investigation it is next to impossible that an elementary' laboratory manual should include the latest results, especially when the essential points of many of them may yet be in controversy and need the critical treatment which is certainly not within the province of a work of this character. In the hands of an instructor in touch with current botanical thought, such deficiencies are easily supplied. In the interests of precision, the term "assimilation" is here used exclusively to denote a general function of protoplasm, while the term "photosynthesis," which was introduced into the translation of Oels' manual (Preface and page 30), is adopted to signify the special process of forming carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of chlorophyll and sunlight. The author is indebted to Mr. R. N. Day and Miss J. E. Tilden for the demonstration and drawing for Figure 32. Book Some Recent Researches in Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Recent Researches in Plant Physiology The general aim of the book is to present to senior students and investigators the results of recent work in a few of those branches of plant physiology which are at present attracting attention. Matter already to be found in text books has been almost entirely excluded. In order to preserve to some extent a historical method of treatment, the date is inserted after the name of each worker, and is followed by a numeral to show to which paper reference is being made in cases where more than one were published in a year. By such a presentation of portions of the science which are still in a state of rapid growth, it is hoped that further investigation will be stimulated. The choice of material by the author was, to a considerable degree, influenced by his familiarity with certain subjects of general interest, portions of which are being studied experimentally by the staff of the School of Botany, Trinity College, Dublin. Upon these, rather than upon other researches of equal or greater importance, he has felt qualified to write, on account of his first-hand knowledge of many of the methods employed. A small amount of hitherto unpublished work has also been included. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
