Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose ofthis brief Foreword is to make you, the reader, hungry for the scientific feast that follows. These two volumes on the prokary otes offer a truly unique scientific menu-a comprehensive assembly of articles, exhibiting the biochemical depth and remarkable physiological and morphological diversity of prokaryote life. The size of the volumes might initially discourage the unprepared mind from being attracted to the study of prokaryote life, for this landmark assemblage thoroughly documents the wealth of present knowledge. But in confronting the reader with the state of the art, the Handbook also defines where new work needs to be done on well-studied bacteria as well as on unusual or poorly studied organisms. There are basically two ways of doing research with microbes. A classical approach is first to define the phenomenon to be studied and then to select the organism accordingly. Another way is to choose a specific organism and go where it leads. The pursuit of an unusual microbe brings out the latent hunter in all of us. The intellectual chal lenges of the chase frequently test our ingenuity to the limit. Sometimes the quarry repeatedly escapes, but the final capture is indeed a wonder ful experience. For many of us, these simple rewards are sufficiently gratifying so that we have chosen to spend our scientific lives studying these unusual creatures.

Book Plant Breeding for Pest and Disease Resistance

Download or read book Plant Breeding for Pest and Disease Resistance written by G.E. Russell and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the Agricultural and Food Sciences: Plant Breeding for Pest and Disease Resistance presents a critical review of the development of resistant varieties of plant to pests and diseases. It discusses the economic impact of pests and diseases; the methods of controlling these pests and diseases; and the challenges being faced by a plant breeder. Some of the topics covered in the book are the general principles and methods of breeding for resistance; importance of parasite variability to the plant breeder; methods of testing for resistance; requirements for successful inoculation; production of resistant varieties; and economic importance of fungal diseases; and variability in fungal pathogen. Pathogenic fungi and fungal diseases are also covered. The control of fungal diseases by resistant varieties is discussed. An in-depth analysis of diseases in plants is provided. The characteristics of bacteria and bacterial diseases are also presented. A chapter is devoted to epidemiology of diseases associated with mycoplasma-like organisms and rickettsia-like organisms. The book can provide useful information to farmers, botanists, students, and researchers.

Book Plant pathogenic bacteria

Download or read book Plant pathogenic bacteria written by Lucia Civetta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1068 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 270 scientists from 33 countries attended the 6th International Conference on Plant Pathogenic Bacteria in College Park, Maryland, June 2-7, 1985. The Conference was jOintly sponsored by the International Society of Plant Pathology, Bacteria Section and by the United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service. The Conference provided an opportunity for the presentation and discussion of recent developments in phytobacteriology. The Conference was organized into five symposia, seven discussion sessions, contributed papers and poster presentations. More than 230 contributions were presented under the following topics: ice nucleating bacteria; detection, identification, nomenclature and taxonomy of phytopathogenic bacteria; applications and impact of new biotechnologies on phytobacteriology; bacterial phytotoxins; diagnostic phytobacteriology; management of bacterial plant diseases; and molecular biology, genetics and ecology, epidemiology of phytopathogenic bacteria. In addition, special sessions focused on Agrobacterium, Erwinia, Psedomonas and fastidious prokaryotes. This reflected the broad spectrum of current research activity in phytobacteriology. Furthermore, interest in this series of conferences clearly continues to increase. Key research scientists who are currently making major advances in phytobacteriology participated in the Symposia and Discussions. One of the most significant recent changes that has occurred in the field of plant pathology generally is the dynamic growth of research in which recombinant DNA technology is being applied in basic studies on bacterial plant pathogens. Results from investigations on the crown gall bacterium have stimulated expansion of research on other bacterial systems.

Book Disease Control in Crops

Download or read book Disease Control in Crops written by Dale Walters and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The control of diseases in crops is still largely dominated by theuse of fungicides, but with the increasing incidence of fungicideresistance, plus mounting concern for the environment resultingfrom excessive agrochemical use, the search for alternative, reliable methods of disease control is gaining momentum. The purpose of this important book is to examine the developmentand exploitation (or potential for exploitation) of a range ofnon-chemical approaches to disease control, with a focus on theneed for a greater understanding of crop ecology as the basis foreffective disease control in the field. Chapters in the book, written by international experts in the subject area, includecoverage of: biological control methods host-plant resistance the exploitation of tolerance and the use of bacteriophages Carefully edited by Professor Dale Walters, widely respected forhis work in the area of crop protection, Disease Control inCrops is an essential reference book for plant pathologists, microbiologists, plant and agricultural scientists and cropprotection specialists, including those working within, andproviding consultancy to, the agrochemical industries. Libraries inall universities and research establishments where biologicalsciences and agriculture are studied and taught should have copiesof this timely publication on their shelves.
