Book Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of Plant Organelles

Download or read book Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of Plant Organelles written by Henry Daniell, Ph.D. and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-04 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have taught plant molecular biology and biotechnology at the undergraduate and graduate level for over 20 years. In the past few decades, the field of plant organelle molecular biology and biotechnology has made immense strides. From the green revolution to golden rice, plant organelles have revolutionized agriculture. Given the exponential growth in research, the problem of finding appropriate textbooks for courses in plant biotechnology and molecular biology has become a major challenge. After years of handing out photocopies of various journal articles and reviews scattered through out the print and electronic media, a serendipitous meeting occurred at the 2002 IATPC World Congress held in Orlando, Florida. After my talk and evaluating several posters presented by investigators from my laboratory, Dr. Jacco Flipsen, Publishing Manager of Kluwer Publishers asked me whether I would consider editing a book on Plant Organelles. I accepted this challenge, after months of deliberations, primarily because I was unsuccessful in finding a text book in this area for many years. I signed the contract with Kluwer in March 2003 with a promise to deliver a camera-ready textbook on July 1, 2004. Given the short deadline and the complexity of the task, I quickly realized this task would need a co-editor. Dr. Christine Chase was the first scientist who came to my mind because of her expertise in plant mitochondria, and she readily agreed to work with me on this book.

Book Current Technologies in Plant Molecular Breeding

Download or read book Current Technologies in Plant Molecular Breeding written by Hee-Jong Koh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent progress in biotechnology and genomics has expanded the plant breeders’ horizon providing a molecular platform on the traditional plant breeding, which is now known as ‘plant molecular breeding’. Although diverse technologies for molecular breeding have been developed and applied individually for plant genetic improvement, common use in routine breeding programs seems to be limited probably due to the complexity and incomplete understanding of the technologies. This book is intended to provide a guide for researchers or graduate students involved in plant molecular breeding by describing principles and application of recently developed technologies with actual case studies for practical use. The nine topics covered in this book include the basics on genetic analysis of agronomic traits, methods of detecting QTLs, the application of molecular markers, genomics-assisted breeding including epigenomic issues, and genome-wide association studies. Identification methods of mutagenized plants, actual case studies for the isolation and functional studies of genes, the basics of gene transfer in major crops and the procedures for commercialization of GM crops are also described. This book would be a valuable reference for plant molecular breeders and a cornerstone for the development of new technologies in plant molecular breeding for the future.

Book Plant Biotechnology and Development

Download or read book Plant Biotechnology and Development written by Peter M. Gresshoff and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-01-27 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Biotechnology and Development is the first of a series of publications designed to provide readers with an overview of current topics in plant molecular biology. Such an overview is important due to the fact that researchers from many disciplines are successfully turning their attention to plant development in an attempt to increase our understanding of the laws of nature itself. Plant molecular biology is a new field resulting from this scientific concentration and can be classified anywhere from the purely scientific to the practical and applied. Plant Biotechnology and Development addresses biochemical as well as genetic analyses, in addition to morphological and evolutionary considerations. It emphasizes plant-microbe interactions, especially legume root nodule symbiosis. A glossary of terms is included at the back of the book to enable readers new to the field to "wade" through the jargon often associated with plant molecular biology. The book is fully indexed to allow easy access to information. Plant Biotechnology and Development and the series "Current Topics in Plant Molecular Biology" will interest pharmaceutical researchers, geneticists, botanists, molecular biologists, cell biologists, biochemists, and others who would like to learn more about plant molecular biology and its influence on all disciplines.

Book Recent Advances in Plant Biotechnology

Download or read book Recent Advances in Plant Biotechnology written by Ara Kirakosyan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-08-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant biotechnology applies to three major areas of plants and their uses: (1) control of plant growth and development; (2) protection of plants against biotic and abiotic stresses; and (3) expansion of ways by which specialty foods, biochemicals, and pharmaceuticals are produced. The topic of recent advances in plant biotechnology is ripe for consideration because of the rapid developments in this ?eld that have revolutionized our concepts of sustainable food production, cost-effective alt- native energy strategies, environmental bioremediation, and production of pla- derived medicines through plant cell biotechnology. Many of the more traditional approaches to plant biotechnology are woefully out of date and even obsolete. Fresh approaches are therefore required. To this end, we have brought together a group of contributors who address the most recent advances in plant biotechnology and what they mean for human progress, and hopefully, a more sustainable future. Achievements today in plant biotechnology have already surpassed all previous expectations. These are based on promising accomplishments in the last several decades and the fact that plant biotechnology has emerged as an exciting area of research by creating unprecedented opportunities for the manipulation of biological systems. In connection with its recent advances, plant biotechnology now allows for the transfer of a greater variety of genetic information in a more precise, controlled manner. The potential for improving plant productivity and its proper use in agric- ture relies largely on newly developed DNA biotechnology and molecular markers.
