Book Plant Life and Evolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Life and Evolution Classic Reprint written by Douglas Houghton Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Life and Evolution The evidence as to the possibility of spontaneous generation at the present time is entirely negative. All of the alleged successful experiments in this direction have been shown to be the result of er rors, and as yet no successful attempts have been made to produce living matter by artificial means. So far as we know at the present time, all living things arise from preexisting ones by some form of reproduction. It is, however, the general belief of biologists, that at some remote period living mat ter arose from inorganic elements. The theory that living germs were brought to the earth from somewhere in space is not generally accepted; and the criticism has been made of this view that, after all, it does not explain the origin of life, but merely the advent of life upon the earth. Download or read book Heredity and Evolution in Plants Classic Reprint written by C. Stuart Gager and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity and Evolution in Plants Chapters X, Geographical Distribution, and XIII, The Great Groups of Plants, and the Bibliography are new. N o attempt has been made to cite the voluminous periodical literature in the Bibliography, but needless to state, this has been freely consulted and drawn upon. Numerous citations are given as foot-notes, especially in Chapter X. In going over the chapters it also became evident that since, in order to read them understandingly, one must have a clear conception of the facts of the lift history of a vascular plant, it would be best to introduce from the Fundamentals of Botany the three chapters (viz. XII XIV) on the life history of the fern. As stated in the Preface to that book, while the ultimate problem of botany is the development of the kingdom of plants, the more immediate and fundamental problem is the development of the individual plant. Ontogeny is fundamental because without a knowledge of its processes the processes of phylogeny cannot be comprehended. Phylogeny is the ultimate problem because its complete solution in volves an orderly description of all the phenomena of plant life, and their relation to each other. The author is specially indebted to Dr. 0. E. White, curator of plant breeding in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, for a careful reading of the entire manuscript and for many valuable suggestions; also to Mr. Norman Taylor, curator of plants, in connection with Chapter X, and to Dr. Alfred Gundersen, associate curator of plants in the same institution, for numerous constructive criticisms in connection with Chapter XIII. The diagram show ing the apparent affinities and approximate geological distribution of the main groups of vascular plants (p. Those of you who are familiar with botany will pardon the intro duction of some rudimentary facts, which are essential to the systematic development of the idea which I am to pre sent to you. Book Lectures on the Evolution of Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the Evolution of Plants Classic Reprint written by Douglas Houghton Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Evolution of Plants In the present volume I have endeavored to present in as untechnical a manner as seemed feasible the more striking facts bearing upon the evolution of plant forms. While there are numerous excellent text-books in which most of the statements here given are clearly presented, there is none, at least in English, so far as I am aware, where a connected account of the development of the plant kingdom from an evolutionary standpoint has been attempted. Of course every modern system of classification is based upon the assumption of a genetic connection between the different groups, and must take into account the origin of plant forms; but these phylogenetic problems are necessarily subordinated in the general text-books. Moreover, these textbooks are, for the most part, avowedly prepared for the use of botanical students alone. It seemed to the writer that an accurate, if somewhat general, and not strictly technical, statement of our present knowledge concerning the data from which the genealogical history of the vegetable kingdom may be traced, might be of interest not only to such botanists as have not concerned themselves specially with this phase of the science, but also to zoologists, and those general readers who are interested in biological problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Life Technical terms, which are the intellectual currency of the botanist, and imply in a single word or phrase what would be explained only in long sentences, have not been entirely avoided. Indeed, the author has been compelled to use a considerable number, but an effort has been made to lead up to their use in easy sequence, and to explain as tersely and clearly as possible what they mean. The glossarial index will assist the reader in discovering where the meanings of terms are explained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by EDUARD. STRASBURGER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany IT is customary to place all living beings in either the animal 01 vegetable kingdoms, but in reality a sharp boundary line between animals and plants first becomes possible when they exhibit a complicated structure. In those of more simple organisation all distinctions disappear, and it becomes difficult to define the exact limits of Botany and Zoology. This, in fact, could scarcely be otherwise, as all the processes of life, in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms, are dependent On the same substance, protoplasm. With more complicated organisation, the specific differences increase, and the characteristics distinguishing animal from vegetable life become more obvious. For the present, it must be confessed, the recognition Of an organism, as an animal or a plant, is dependent upon its corre spondence with an abstract idea of what a plant or animal Should be, .based on certain points of agreement between the members of each class. A satisfactory basis for the Separation of all living organisms into the categories of animals or plants can only be obtained when it is shown that all organisms distinguished as animals are in reality genetically connected, and that a similar connection exists between all plants. The proof of this can only be arrived at through the theory OF evolution. From the study of the fossil remains and impressions Of animals and plants, it has been established that in former epochs forms Of life. Differing from those of the present age existed on the earth. It is also generally assumed that all living animals and plants have been derived by gradual modification from previously existing forms. This leads to the further conclusion that those organisms possess ing closely Similar structure, which are united as species in a genus, are in reality related to one another. It is also probable that the union of corresponding genera into one familv and of families into higher groups serves to give expression to a real relationship existing between them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Survival of the Unlike: A Collection of Evolution Essays Suggested by the Study of Domestic Plants For several years it has been my habit, when called upon to address horticultural societies, to choose some topic intimately associated with the evolution of domestic plants. My motives have been several. I have chiefly desired to attempt to answer many of the common questions which puzzle horticulturists by ap pealing to the evidences Of evolution, for I am con vinced that many Of these questions can be answered in no other 'way. I have also desired to spread a knowledge of the evolution speculations and of the methods Of research which they suggest, amongst those who deal with plants and animals, and who lead a rural life. Again, I have wished to make a record Of a great class Of most common and significant facts vitally related to the study Of organic evolution, but which are almost wholly overlooked by students and philosophers. In making these essays, I have con stantly had in mind the collation and publication of them, and I have, therefore, endeavored to discuss the leading problems associated with the variation and evolution of cultivated plants, in order that the final collection should be somewhat consecutive.
