Other sources of biofuel, such as sweet sorghum, Agave americana L. leaves waste, and fungi are included as well. Chapters also discuss the genetic regulation and genetic engineering of principal microorganisms and then go on to address ways to increase ethanol tolerance in industrially important ethanol fermenting organisms, methods for developing sustainable fermentable substrates, and new strategies for ethanol purification. Chapters explore the design and engineering requirements for bioreactors, bioelectrosynthesis of ethanol via bioelectrochemical systems, and more. The book will be a valuable resource for faculty and students in this area as well as for scientists, researchers, and managers in the biofuel industry in the area of biofuel production, fermentation process, environmental engineering and all other related scientific areas.

Download or read book Growth and Mineral Nutrition of Field Crops written by Nand Kumar Fageria and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the year 2050, the world's population is expected to reach nine billion. To feed and sustain this projected population, world food production must increase by at least 50 percent on much of the same land that we farm today. To meet this staggering challenge, scientists must develop the technology required to achieve an "evergreen" revolution-one

Download or read book Phenotyping for Plant Breeding written by Siva Kumar Panguluri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant phenotyping is the thorough assessment of plant traits such as growth, development, adaptation, yield, quality, tolerance, resistance, architecture, and the basic measurement of individual quantitative parameters that form the basis for understanding of traits. Genetic approaches to understand plant growth and development have always benefitted from phenotyping techniques that are simple, rapid and measurable in units. The forward genetics approach is all about understanding the trait inheritance using the phenotypic data and in most cases it is the mutant phenotypes that formed the basis for understanding of gene functions. With rapid advancement of genotyping techniques, high throughput genotyping has become a reality at costs people never imagined to be that low, but the phenotypic methods did not receive same attention. However, without quality phenotyping data the genotyping data cannot be effectively put to use in plant improvement. Therefore efforts are underway to develop high-throughput phenotyping methods in plants to keep pace with revolutionary advancement in genotyping techniques to enhance the efficiency of crop improvement programs. Keeping this in mind, we described in this book the best phenomic tools available for trait improvement in some of the world’s most important crop plants.

Book excerpt: Sorghum is among the top five cereals and one of the key crops in global food security efforts. Sorghum is a resilient crop under high-stress environments, ensuring productivity and access to food when other crops fail. Scientists see the potential of sorghum as a main staple food in a future challenged by climate change. The contributors provide a comprehensive review of sorghum knowledge. The discussion covers genetic improvements, development of new hybrids, biotechnology, and physiological modifications. Production topics include water and nutrient management, rotations, and pest control. Final end uses, sorghum as a bioenergy crop, markets, and the future of sorghum are presented. IN PRESS! This book is being published according to the “Just Published” model, with more chapters to be published online as they are completed.

Book Genetic Response and Resistance in Plants towards Abiotic and Biotic Stresses

Download or read book Genetic Response and Resistance in Plants towards Abiotic and Biotic Stresses written by Sushil Satish Chhapekar and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billions of plants species in our planet have been facing various kinds of abiotic and biotic stresses which are ultimately leading to severe ecological damages as well as severe food insecurity challenges. Depending on the regions, abiotic stresses refer to extremely high and low temperatures, ultraviolet radiation, high or low light, salinity, floods, drought, heavy metals, etc., while biotic stresses refer to damages caused by insects, herbivores, nematodes, fungi, bacteria, or weeds. These stresses have been further accelerating and even becoming worse every day under the influence of unpredictable drastic climate change events. In order to cope with such stresses, varieties of plants and crops have been adopting physiological, morphological, genetical, and hormonal changes which are vital for ecological balances as well as for sustainable crop development. The aim of this Research Topic is to provide references on how different plant and crop species are responding to those abiotic and biotic stresses genetically while also evolving to cope with them. We welcome studies on any plant and crop species (1) which have shown natural genetic evolution or have responded to manipulated genetic transformations under any abiotic and biotic stresses (2) which have shown biochemical and physiological changes that correspond to genetic changes in response to abiotic and biotic stresses.
