Book The Malmquist Productivity Index and Plant Capacity Utilization

Download or read book The Malmquist Productivity Index and Plant Capacity Utilization written by Bruno De Borger and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new decomposition of the Malmquist productivity index is proposed to account for changes in plant capacity utilization. Using a primal, non-parametric specification of technology, the Malmquist index is decomposed into technical efficiency change, variations in plant capacity utilization and frontier shifts. It provides an alternative to the available methods of incorporating capacity utilization changes into measures of productivity change. Such measures are based on parametric (and, in many cases, dual) technology specifications; moreover, they typically do not allow for technical inefficiency.

Book Capacity and Inventory Planning for Make to Order Production Systems

Download or read book Capacity and Inventory Planning for Make to Order Production Systems written by Klaus Altendorfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents different models for the simultaneous optimization problem of capacity investment and work release rule parameterization. The overall costs are minimized either including backorder costs or considering a service level constraint. The available literature is extended with the integration of a distributed customer required lead time in addition to the actual demand distribution. Furthermore, an endogenous production lead time is introduced. Different models for make-to-order production systems with one or multiple serial processing stages are developed. Capacity investment is linked to the processing rates of the machines or to the number of the machines. Results are equations for service level, tardiness, and FGI lead time in such a production system. For special cases with M/M/1 and M/M/s queues explicit solutions of the optimization problems or optimality conditions concerning capacity investment and work release rule parameterization are provided.

Book Manufacturing Systems

Download or read book Manufacturing Systems written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some 70 percent of U.S. manufacturing output currently faces direct foreign competition. While American firms understand the individual components of their manufacturing processes, they must begin to work with manufacturing systems to develop world-class capabilities. This new book identifies principles-termed foundations-that have proved effective in improving manufacturing systems. Authored by an expert panel, including manufacturing executives, the book provides recommendations for manufacturers, leading to specific action in three areas: Management philosophy and practice. Methods used to measure and predict the performance of systems. Organizational learning and improving system performance through technology. The volume includes in-depth studies of several key issues in manufacturing, including employee involvement and empowerment, using learning curves to improve quality, measuring performance against that of the competition, focusing on customer satisfaction, and factory modernization. It includes a unique paper on jazz music as a metaphor for participative manufacturing management. Executives, managers, engineers, researchers, faculty, and students will find this book an essential tool for guiding this nation's businesses toward developing more competitive manufacturing systems.

Book Encyclopedia of Production and Manufacturing Management

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Production and Manufacturing Management written by Paul M. Swamidass and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production and manufacturing management since the 1980s has absorbed in rapid succession several new production management concepts: manufacturing strategy, focused factory, just-in-time manufacturing, concurrent engineering, total quality management, supply chain management, flexible manufacturing systems, lean production, mass customization, and more. With the increasing globalization of manufacturing, the field will continue to expand. This encyclopedia's audience includes anyone concerned with manufacturing techniques, methods, and manufacturing decisions.

Book Forest Biomass

Download or read book Forest Biomass written by T. Satoo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.

Book Capacity Measurement Improvement

Download or read book Capacity Measurement Improvement written by Thomas P. Klammer and published by Irwin Professional Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capacity is one of the most important and least understood concepts in business and manufacturing today. While some financial managers might judge plant capacity in mechanical terms, such as the equipment installed in the plant, operational supervisors might instead judge capacity in human terms or worker efficiency. This leads to several questions: Under what guidelines should you measure capacity? Can unused capacity become a commodity to be bought or sold? How much reserve capacity buffer does a company need? As these questions indicate, capacity and its measurement is a complex topic, multi-faceted yet critical to the efficient, profitable operation of any manufacturing facility. This innovative tool for measuring the effectiveness of capacity use allows operations and management employees to approach capacity from the same perspectives and presents a framework to utilize common measurements in the management of capacity. As budgets and time become increasingly tight, accurate capacity measurement and effective capacity usage become increasingly important. Capacity Measurement & Improvement teaches you to identify appropriate capacity measurements, improve top-to-bottom communication of your company's capacity and make the most of your company's capacity utilization.
