Book Urban Planning Against Poverty

Download or read book Urban Planning Against Poverty written by Jean-Claude Bolay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book revisits the theoretical foundations of urban planning and the application of these concepts and methods in the context of Southern countries by examining several case studies from different regions of the world. For instance, the case of Koudougou, a medium-sized city in one of the poorest countries in the world, Burkina Faso, with a population of 115.000 inhabitants, allows us to understand concretely which and how these deficiencies are translated in an African urban context. In contrast, the case of Nueve de Julio, intermediate city of 50.000 dwellers in the pampa Argentina, addresses the new forms of spatial fragmentation and social exclusion linked with agro export and crisis of the international markets. Case studies are also included for cities in Asia and Latin America. Differences and similarities between cases allow us to foresee alternative models of urban planning better adapted to tackle poverty and find efficient ways for more inclusive cities in developing and emerging countries, interacting several dimensions linked with high rates of urbanization: territorial fragmentation; environmental contamination; social disparities and exclusion, informal economy and habitat, urban governance and democracy.

Book Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in the Americas

Download or read book Dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in the Americas written by Pan American Sanitary Bureau and published by Pan American Health Organization. This book was released on 1994 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dengue and its potentially fatal forms, dengue henorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, once more threaten much of the Americas. In the 1980s the vector control programmes fell victim to the cutbacks in public health expenditure and their responses to dengue outbreaks tended to be a little too late. These guidelines have risen to the challenge by incorporating all aspects of the prevention and control of the disease and its vectors. In addition, because dengue is primarily a problem of domestic sanitation and households can combat the problem inexpensively. The guidelines enmphasize ways to transfer responsibility for dengue control and prevention to the community."

  • Author : Nancy Leys Stepan
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 1996-11-14
  • ISBN : 1501702254

Download or read book The Hour of Eugenics written by Nancy Leys Stepan and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-14 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugenics was a term coined in 1883 to name the scientific and social theory which advocated "race improvement" through selective human breeding. In Europe and the United States the eugenics movement found many supporters before it was finally discredited by its association with the racist ideology of Nazi Germany. Examining for the first time how eugenics was taken up by scientists and social reformers in Latin America, Nancy Leys Stepan compares the eugenics movements in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina with the more familiar cases of Britain, the United States, and Germany. In this highly original account, Stepan sheds new light on the role of science in reformulating issues of race, gender, reproduction, and public health in an era when the focus on national identity was particularly intense. Drawing upon a rich body of evidence concerning the technical publications and professional meetings of Latin American eugenicists, she examines how they adapted eugenic principles to local contexts between the world wars. Stepan shows that Latin American eugenicists diverged considerably from their counterparts in Europe and the United States in their ideological approach and their interpretations of key texts concerning heredity.
