Book Water and the Rainforest in Malaysian Borneo

Download or read book Water and the Rainforest in Malaysian Borneo written by Ian Douglas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume synthesizes and analyzes thirty years of hydrological research in the Danum Valley Conservation Area, a lowland dipterocarp rainforest in Sabah, Malaysia. Ian Douglas explores the role of water in the rainforest ecosystem, setting out the ecological, climatological and geological context of present-day hydrological processes, soil erosion and stream sedimentation. He emphasizes the role of extreme events and natural disturbances in sediment supplies and the evolution of drainage pathways and explains the pathways of rainfall and stream sediment. Douglas then explores the impacts caused by logging, the extreme pulses of sedimentation and the effects of log removal and logging road construction, examining the effects of major storms in the 20 years after tree harvesting. Methods of minimizing logging damage to soils and streams are discussed and the effects on flora and fauns are considered.

Book Planning for Timber tract Development

Download or read book Planning for Timber tract Development written by Robert Jay Marty and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Once a forest owner has decided to develop his property for timber production, his first concern is for the direction of development. This involves questions of species composition, method of management (even-aged or uneven-aged), and type of products to manage for. After these decisions are made, two basic problems arise. The first problem is to determine the optimum level of development for the ownership. This involves the questions of how much growing stock to carry; how far to go in trying to establish, protect, and improve growing stock; and how much investment in roads and other physical improvement is justified. The second problem is to decide how fast to move toward this optimum level of development.S3.

Book Forest Roads

Download or read book Forest Roads written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of roads in forested ecosystems span direct physical and ecological ones (such as geomorphic and hydrologic effects), indirect and landscape level ones (such as effects on aquatic habitat, terrestrial vertebrates, and biodiversity conservation), and socioeconomic ones (such as passive-use value, economic effects on development and range management). Road effects take place in the contexts of environmental settings, their history, and the state of engineering practices, and must be evaluated in those contexts for best management approaches.
