Book excerpt: Above all, the central goal of this project was to engage in a frank discussion with planning professionals and other key stakeholders to identify and explain the key barriers and policy gaps in implementing effective planning strategies in the face of the significant environmental challenges of the twenty-first century. [...] A complete listing of the interview questions provided to planners and planning directors is provided in Appendix A. • Department of the Environment Officials: Early in the research process we met with officials in the Community Planning Section of The Department of Environment, which presides over provincial land use planning and sustainable community development. [...] In many ways, it is the active work of this group that has generated much debate on the effectiveness of existing planning processes in the wake of emerging climate change science and ways in which land-use planning might overcome some of the barriers in identifying and responding effectively to the impact and possible future scenarios for the region. [...] For the purposes of this handbook, however, the concept of sustainability will be used in accordance with the widely accepted definition outlined in the United Nation's Brundtland Commission Report: Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. [...] For the purposes of this research project, the New Brunswick planning process is construed as the culmination of provincial policy, provincial legislation, municipal policies and bylaws, and the practice of the planners, planning directors and government actors that regulate land use within the province.

The current global school strikes for climate action (known as Fridays for Future) evidences this. The book advocates the view that the focus needs to rest on ways in which our cities and industries can become green enough to avoid urban ecocide. Bringing together case studies from the US, UK, Poland, Israel, South Africa, The Netherlands and Italy, it covers a wide range of issues and contexts, ranging from the metropolitan to the community level. On the basis of these case studies, the book shows that planners do indeed have a variety of options to advance sustainability notions at these levels, and appear to be doing so. The book proposes that planners should operate at two levels: firstly to change institutional structures, and secondly to advance sustainability notions incrementally in the meantime, within the existing institutional constraints.
