Book Planning for an In school Suspension Program

Download or read book Planning for an In school Suspension Program written by Coronica L. L. Richardson and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2009 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this critical action research study was to examine the perceptions of teachers and support staff regarding planning of an in-school suspension program, according to a framework suggested by Short and Noblit (1985), which includes academic, therapeutic, and punitive curricular components. Participatory research was used to plan the curriculum of an ISS. The qualitative design of this participatory study utilized interviews and focus groups. The design explored the perceptions of middle school teachers and support staff. Coding revealed that middle school teachers and support staff perceived these three components were important in planning an in-school suspension program. Middle school teachers and support staff perceived the therapeutic curricular component was related to one-on-one counseling. The academic curricular component was related to the advancement and remediation of student skills. Middle school teachers and support staff perceived the punitive curricular component was related to structure, rules, and regulations. Counseling was viewed as an important component to improve students' self image within the school community. Middle school teachers and support staff believed that students need to take responsibility for their behavior and that a punitive component could provide appropriate structure to the curriculum, however along with the combination of the academic and therapeutic components could provide for a well-rounded ISS. Future qualitative research could address students' input in an ISS program.

Book A Guide to In School Suspension Programs Using the Counseling Handbook

Download or read book A Guide to In School Suspension Programs Using the Counseling Handbook written by Gregory O. Myers and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will be a guide to assisting disruptive students who are constantly being placed in IN School; Suspension without a road map paved for them to be successful. As a school teacher and administrator for the past 24 years, I have noticed students being placed in ISS Programs without any form of therapeutic treatment designed to assist them. This book reveals research study by various authors who have worked in the education setting through out the United States. The book will be a guide for students who are labeled as repeaters in the ISSP, that the their behaviors can be modified using the counseling handbook. As we try to improve our form of educating young people in America, schools have to cope with classroom behaviors, and violence to make sure no child is left behind in receiving an optimal level of education in the 21st century. The book uses an approach that keeps students in schools and keeps them from receiving OSS as an alternative punishment. Students see OSS as a way of being out of the education setting and being at home without any form of education taking place. This book will assist school officials to guide ISS repeaters in the right direction and prevent obstacles from causing them to excel.

Book Handbook of Classroom Management

Download or read book Handbook of Classroom Management written by Carolyn M. Evertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 1357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classroom management is a topic of enduring concern for teachers, administrators, and the public. It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes: *First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management. *Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum. *Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior. *Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness. Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.

Book excerpt: On a plane, a black passenger nervously scrutinizes an Arab–American passenger. In front of a store, a white woman clutches her purse as a black man walks by. In conversation, the topic of race comes up and both people wonder what they are willing to say—and what they are not. Each scenario reveals that how we act and react to each other on a daily basis stems from racial assumptions, biases, and misunderstandings. Some we acknowledge, others we overlook. In the wake of 9/11, confronting race relations in America is as daunting as it is necessary. Race Manners shows us how we can begin a civilized, meaningful dialogue—not with evasive abstractions, but with practicality and candor. Bruce A. Jacobs, a tireless speaker, has traveled the country over the past six years, learning and listening as people reacted to the first edition of this book and told him their own stories. In this newest edition, here is a candid assessment of and guide to improving race relations that offers honest clarity on fear of crime and terrorism, the role of “rage talk media,” the problem with tolerance, race in pop music from Elvis to Eminem and beyond, the “N-word,” and much more.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book Breaking the Cycle written by Adra Friedman and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many schools are decreasing the number of out-of-school suspensions administered to students, the number of in-school suspensions remains high in districts nationwide. Research shows the negative impact of suspension on students, both during their K-12 schooling and well past graduation, with the school-to-prison pipeline creating a direct path from school discipline to involvement in the criminal justice system. This project is designed to fulfill the overwhelming need for a more proactive approach to in-school suspension - one that aims to eliminate the need for it entirely. A guide was created to be easily implementable in schools to decrease the number of in-school suspensions by working with the students to tackle any underlying issues and needs.
