Book Competition and Privatization Of the Egyptian Banking

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt's efforts to liberalize its financial sector in the 1990s have been impressive. Egyptian authorities have been successful in reversing more than three decades of interventionist policies. The fundamental building blocks of this liberalization process now seem solid. They include a reduced fiscal deficit, and the unification and freeing of exchange rates, interest rates, and lending decisions from administrative control. The initial privatization of large banks has removed some of the extensive ownership links between banksőone likely cause of uncompetitive banking. The benefits of reform are beginning to show: inflation control consistent with growth rates, confidence in local currency, and buoyant stock market activity buttressed by numerous prominent privatizations. Capital flows into the economy have also been much stronger. Nevertheless, the transformation of the Egyptian financial sector into a modern marketoriented system is still in its infancy. In the future, economic changes which policies can affect should go hand in hand with institutional and attitudinal changes which are potentially more difficult to bring about. Policy makers must continue to work hard to build on the foundations they have laid thus far.

Book Saudi Egyptian Relations

Download or read book Saudi Egyptian Relations written by Jake Wien and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the vicissitudes of relations between Saudi Arabia and Egypt in the past decade and focuses on the aid flows and their political and military dimensions. In particular, and to their exclusion of private sector flows for which confidentiality is an important obstacle for research, cash flows from the Saudi public sector to the public sector of Egypt will be ascertained, but no methodical attempt will be made to determine their ultimate effects at the microeconomic level. A conceptual overview of the many institutional and non-institutional channels through which Saudi aid to Egypt flows follows. The chart divides Saudi economic aid to Egypt into descriptive categories of origins and ends. Emanating from both the public and private sector in the recipient economy, often passing through intermediary financial institutions, aid has flowed to either the public or private sector in the recipient economy. The essential Arab aid institutions, bilateral and multilateral, and their respective assistance to Egyptian development are examined.

Book Determinants of Egyptian Banks Profitability Before and After Financial Crisis

Download or read book Determinants of Egyptian Banks Profitability Before and After Financial Crisis written by Osama El-Ansary and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important instruments of the financial system that reveals the future of the economy in any country is the profitability of the banking sector. Starting from 2008, Egypt was banged by consecutive shocks, both globally and locally, started with global financial crisis in Sep., 2008. The essential objective of the current study is to investigate factors that affect Egyptian banks' profitability before and after financial crisis using Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) through Eviews. The sample period covers from 2004 to 2013, return on assets and return on equity were used as proxy for banks' profitability. The explanatory variables which effect profitability are deposits to total assets ratio, operating income to asset ratio, credit quality, capital adequacy, loans rate, equity growth minus loan growth rate, asset share ratio and Egyptian banks' total assets to Egyptian gross domestic product (GDP).The empirical findings suggested that Egyptian banks with higher capital strength, asset share, and efficient management exhibit higher profitability level, whilst Egyptian banks with higher credit risk and loans intensity exhibit lower profitability level.

Book On Financial Development and Economic Growth in the Arab Republic of Egypt

Download or read book On Financial Development and Economic Growth in the Arab Republic of Egypt written by Mahmoud Mohieldin and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the evolution of the Egyptian banking sector and the main trends in financial development in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The paper examines empirically the relationship between the development of the financial sector and economic growth in Egypt between 1980 and 2016. It draws comparisons based on critical financial indicators between Egypt and selected emerging markets and developing economies, using a new data set of financial development indexes released by the International Monetary Fund. Econometric time-series modeling of bivariate regressions for real growth per capita and measures of financial development, to assess the relationship between financial development and economic growth in Egypt, yields three specific findings. First; there is a strong association between real growth per capita and financial development measured. Second; access to and the efficiency of banking services are not associated with real per capita income. Third, the Financial Markets Access Index'which compiles data on market capitalization outside the top 10 largest companies and the number of corporate issuers of debt'indicates that there is a robust association with real per capita gross domestic product. The main policy implications suggest that there should be a stronger focus on promoting a more proactive role for the financial services industry in Egypt. There is an especially critical role for bank financing to support the private sector to maintain an inclusive growth momentum. Further development of the capital market will promote the sustainability of such economic growth.

Book excerpt: Egypt has enjoyed a period of political stability since the turbulence of 2011-13, implementing a wide-ranging programme of economic reform. The process started with a drive to rebalance the economy through a number of challenging initiatives, including the reduction of subsidies, the introduction of value-added tax and the liberation of the Egyptian pound. At the outset of 2018, these headline measures had been implemented, and the government’s focus has since shifted to the improvement of governance and the investment climate. This effort includes the promulgation of the Civil Service Reform Law, aimed at cutting the large public sector wage bill, and an array of legislation designed to remove investment barriers, such as the Industrial Licensing Law, the Investment Law and the Company Law.

Book The Debt System

Download or read book The Debt System written by Éric Toussaint and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A compelling explanation of the deep-seated mechanisms at work in the international credit system” from the coauthor of Debt, the IMF, and the World Bank (Counterfire). For as long as there have been rich nations and poor nations, debt has been a powerful force for maintaining the unequal relations between them. Treated as sacrosanct, immutable, and eternally binding, it has become the yoke of choice for imperial powers in the post-colonial world to enforce their subservience over the global south. In this ground-breaking history, renowned economist Éric Toussaint argues for a radical reversal of this balance of accounts through the repudiation of sovereign debt. “Since 2008 CADTM has campaigned for ‘a new doctrine of illegitimate, illegal, odious, and unsustainable debt’ cancellation. This doctrine includes considerations of whether the debtor state is democratic, whether it respects human rights, whether the debt is incurred within the framework of ‘structural adjustments’ (enforced austerity), and includes all debts incurred to pay back previous odious debts. On grounds of global social justice, The Debt System makes a strong case for this new doctrine.” —Against the Current “This work has much to commend it; it provides detailed analyses of the impact of indebtedness in several nations . . . The author shows that, contrary to orthodox arguments, debt repudiation can be both justified and successfully carried out. I recommend the book wholeheartedly.” —Counterfire
