Book The Life and Death of Planet Earth

Download or read book The Life and Death of Planet Earth written by Peter Douglas Ward and published by Piatkus Books. This book was released on 2007-08-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the first real biography of the Earth - not only a brilliant portrait of the emergence and evolution of life on this planet, but a vivid and frightening look at Earth's remote future. Peter Ward and Donald Brownlee combine storytelling power with extreme scientific care, and their narrative is as transfixing as any of H.G. Wells's fantasies, but more enthralling, for Ward and Brownlee have real power to prognosticate. This is a book that makes one shiver, but also inspires one to wonder how humanity (if we survive in the short term) will fare in the distant future." Oliver Sachs Peter Ward and Don Brownlee, a geologist and an astronomer respectively, are in the vanguard of the new field of astrobiology. Combining their knowledge of the evolution of life on our planet with their understanding of the life cycles of stars and solar systems, the authors tell the awe-inspiring story of the second half of Earth's life. The process of planetary evolution will essentially reverse itself; life as we know it will subside until only the simplest forms remain. The oceans will evaporate, and as the sun slowly expands, Earth itself will eventually meet a fiery end.

Book The Life and Death of Planet Earth

Download or read book The Life and Death of Planet Earth written by Peter D. Ward and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planet Earth is middle-aged. Science has worked hard to piece together the story of the evolution of our world up to this point, but only recently have we developed the understanding and the tools to describe the entire life cycle of a planet. Ward and Brownlee, a geologist and an astronomer respectively, combine their knowledge of how the critical sustaining systems of our planet evolve through time with their understanding of the life cycles of stars and solar systems, to tell the story of the second half of Earth's life. The process of evolution will essentially reverse itself: life as we know it will subside until only the simplest forms remain. Eventually, they too will disappear. The oceans will evaporate, the atmosphere will degrade, and, as the sun slowly expands, Earth itself will eventually meet a fiery end. --From publisher description.

Book excerpt: We all grieve. From the moment we are born into this cold, loud, bright world, we experience change and loss that can often threaten to overwhelm us, but – when managed well – can help mould us into our strongest, most powerful selves. Grief is not only about death: it is part of our everyday lives. We are all grieving something. We grieve when our life changes – when meaningful relationships end, when we move house, change schools or jobs, and when our sense of identity and reality are under threat. We also grieve on a larger level – for a lost way of life and for our planet, particularly in these times of climate crisis, pandemic, fast-moving technology, misinformation and societal division. Grief can even be found in joy and is one of the most universal shared emotions, connecting people across the world in an act of love. In this surprisingly uplifting book, acclaimed grief therapist Dipti Tait draws on her own professional and personal experiences, her clients' stories and the neuroscience behind our emotions to redefine grief for our fast-paced lives and this sometimes alarming yet wonderful world we live in.

  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Extinction written by John McCabe and published by . This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the history of Earth there have been a number of mass extinctions caused by various catastrophic events, including meteorite collisions and volcanic eruptions. It is recognized that there have been five great extinctions. Earth is now experiencing the Sixth Great Extinction, and it is being caused by one species: Humans. From the depths of the oceans to the tops of the mountains, among the smallest living things to the largest, life is rapidly dying. The chief cause of modern extinction is the massive use of fossil fuels. Humans are digging deeper into and mining vast areas of the planet to extract petroleum, coal, and natural gas. The burning of fossil fuels is causing rapid climate change, desertification, the melting of polar ice, and the warming and acidification of the seas. The number one use of fossil fuels relates to food. The chief components of pollution and environmental destruction relating to food are the breeding of billions of farmed animals, using most of the farmland on every continent to grow food for those animals, and destroying topsoil, meadows, wetlands, plains, streams, aquifers, and forests to expand the livestock industry, and the grain industry that feeds it. The seas are being rapidly depleted of fish, crustaceans, and marine mammals, and this is because of overfishing and the taking of billions of creatures from the oceans to use as fertilizer to grow food for and to include as protein in the feed given to billions of farmed animals, including farmed fish. Every year, a variety of life forms, including sea creatures, land animals, birds, amphibians, and plants become closer to extinction, or do become extinct. The chief cause relates to human choices for food and fuel. What role are you playing in the Sixth Great Extinction?

  • Author : Robert Markley
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2005-09-08
  • ISBN : 0822387271
  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book Dying Planet written by Robert Markley and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-08 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, Mars has been at the center of debates about humanity’s place in the cosmos. Focusing on perceptions of the red planet in scientific works and science fiction, Dying Planet analyzes the ways Mars has served as a screen onto which humankind has projected both its hopes for the future and its fears of ecological devastation on Earth. Robert Markley draws on planetary astronomy, the history and cultural study of science, science fiction, literary and cultural criticism, ecology, and astrobiology to offer a cross-disciplinary investigation of the cultural and scientific dynamics that have kept Mars on front pages since the 1800s. Markley interweaves chapters on science and science fiction, enabling him to illuminate each arena and to explore the ways their concerns overlap and influence one another. He tracks all the major scientific developments, from observations through primitive telescopes in the seventeenth century to data returned by the rovers that landed on Mars in 2004. Markley describes how major science fiction writers—H. G. Wells, Kim Stanley Robinson, Philip K. Dick, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, and Judith Merril—responded to new theories and new controversies. He also considers representations of Mars in film, on the radio, and in the popular press. In its comprehensive study of both science and science fiction, Dying Planet reveals how changing conceptions of Mars have had crucial consequences for understanding ecology on Earth.
