Download or read book Music for Landing Planes by written by Éireann Lorsung and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these edgy, elegant poems, Eireann Lorsung seeks balance in her world between the need for permanence and the heady seductiveness of the moment. Her intuitive knowledge of poetic form (line breaks, enjambment, repetition, punctuation) and her strong poetic voice channel some of the genre's greats while remaining distinctive. From the prayer-like musicality of "All Through the Night," to the visually dynamic "Oceanside," to the theatrical "Bird Woman, Duck Hunting," these poems exhibit a visceral creativity that establishes the author as a major new voice in the field.

Download or read book Physics Fabrication and Applications of Multilayered Structures written by Claude Weisbuch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-dimensional materials are of fundamental interest in physics and chemistry and have also found a wide variety of technological applica tions in fields ranging from microelectronics to optics. Since 1986, several seminars and summer schools devoted to low-dimensional systems have been supported by NATO. The present one, Physics, Fabrication and Applications of Multilayered structures, brought together specialists from different fields in order to review fabrication techniques, charac terization methods, physics and applications. Artificially layered materials are attractive because alternately layering two (or more) elements, by evaporation or sputtering, is a way to obtain new materials with (hopefully) new physical properties that pure materials or alloys do not allow. These new possibilities can be ob tained in electronic transport, optics, magnetism or the reflectivity of x-rays and slow neutrons. By changing the components and the thickness of the layers one can track continuously how the new properties appear and follow the importance of the multilayer structure of the materials. In addition, with their large number of interfaces the study of inter face properties becomes easier in multilayered structures than in mono layers or bilayers. As a rule, the role of the interface quality, and also the coupling between layers, increases as the thickness of the layer decreases. Several applications at the development stage require layer thicknesses of just a few atomic layers.

Download or read book Alaska s Bush Planes written by Ned Rozell and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passion for flight has seized Alaska flyers—and those who yearn to fly to the Last Frontier—since 1913, when the first biplane arrived in crates via steamship and paddle-wheeler. In the decades to follow, Alaska’s skies buzzed with aircraft—some brand-new, others patched together, and still others lovingly restored to their original beauty. Alaska’s Bush Planes offers a brief history of flight in Alaska, then transports the reader on a visual journey with favorite aircraft, some of which have served for decades. It’s a perfect book for the pilot—or the pilot wannabe—who dreams of flying in the Northland.
Download or read book Mondrian written by Nicholas Fox Weber and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary and surprising life of Piet Mondrian, whose unprecedented geometric art revolutionized modern painting, architecture, graphic art, fashion design, and more—from acclaimed cultural historian Nicholas Fox Weber In the early 1920s, surrounded by the roaring streets of avant-garde Paris, Piet Mondrian began creating what would become some of the most recognizable abstract paintings of the 20th century. With rectangles of primary colors against a dazzling white background, this was geometric abstraction in its purest form. These revolutionary compositions exhilarated, intoxicated, confused, and enraged the international public—and changed the course of modern art forever. Now, for the first time, Mondrian emerges alongside his thrilling art. Here is the life of an elusive modern master: from his youth in a religious household in the Netherlands where he first began painting Dutch farmhouses and sand dunes, to his move to Paris where he embraced the work of Pablo Picasso, Georges Seurat, and Cézanne, to the 1920s and onward where, surviving the turmoil of two world wars and embracing a rapidly shifting culture, Mondrian challenged the concept of art and invented a new world of undiluted colors and rhythmic straight lines. His work would go on to affect painting, architecture, fashion, and design in decades to come. Here is also an intimate portrait of a complex artist, his solitude and avoidance of intimacy, his eccentricities and his philosophy, his passion for ballroom dancing, and his unwavering belief in art as a vehicle to reveal universal truths.

[Loran] devotes his attention mainly to Cezanne's concrete means and methods, and he arrives thereby at an understanding of Cezanne's art more essential than any other I have seen in print."--Clement Greenberg, Nation
Download or read book The Theory of Transformations in Metals and Alloys written by John Christian and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2002-12-10 with total page 1202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a classic reference text for metallurgists, material scientists and crystallographers. The first edition was published in 1965. The first part of that edition was revised and re-published in 1975 and again in 1981. The present two-part set represents the eagerly awaited full revision by the author of his seminal work, now published as Parts I and II. Professor Christian was one of the founding fathers of materials science and highly respected worldwide. The new edition of his book deserves a place on the bookshelf of every materials science and engineering department. Suitable thermal and mechanical treatments will produce extensive rearrangements of the atoms in metals and alloys, and corresponding marked variations in physical and chemical properties. This book describes how such changes in the atomic configuration are effected, and discusses the associated kinetic and crystallographic features. It deals with areas such as lattice geometry, point defects, dislocations, stacking faults, grain and interphase boundaries, solid solutions, diffusion, etc. The first part covers the general theory while the second part is concerned with descriptions of specific types of transformations.
