Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an epoch-making paper entitled "On an approximate solution for the bending of a beam of rectangular cross-section under any system of load with special reference to points of concentrated or discontinuous loading", received by the Royal Society on June 12, 1902, L. N. G. FlLON introduced the notion of what was subsequently called by LovE "general ized plane stress". In the same paper FlLO~ also gave the fundamental equations which express the displacement (u, v) in terms of the complex variable. The three basic equations of the theory of KoLOsov (1909) which was subsequently developed and improved by MUSKHELISHVILI (1915 and onwards) can be derived directly from Filon's equations. The derivation is indicated by FlLO)!E~KO-BoRODICH. Although FILO)! proceeded at once to the real variable, historically he is the founder of the modern theory of the application of the complex variable to plane elastic problems. The method was developed independently by A. C. STEVEXSOX in a paper received by the Royal Society in 1940 but which was not published, for security reasons, until 1945.

Book Boundary Integral Equations in Elasticity Theory

Download or read book Boundary Integral Equations in Elasticity Theory written by A.M. Linkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by the author to the English edition The book aims to present a powerful new tool of computational mechanics, complex variable boundary integral equations (CV-BIE). The book is conceived as a continuation of the classical monograph by N. I. Muskhelishvili into the computer era. Two years have passed since the Russian edition of the present book. We have seen growing interest in numerical simulation of media with internal structure, and have evidence of the potential of the new methods. The evidence was especially clear in problems relating to multiple grains, blocks, cracks, inclusions and voids. This prompted me, when preparing the English edition, to place more emphasis on such topics. The other change was inspired by Professor Graham Gladwell. It was he who urged me to abridge the chain of formulae and to increase the number of examples. Now the reader will find more examples showing the potential and advantages of the analysis. The first chapter of the book contains a simple exposition of the theory of real variable potentials, including the hypersingular potential and the hypersingular equations. This makes up for the absence of such exposition in current textbooks, and reveals important links between the real variable BIE and the complex variable counterparts. The chapter may also help readers who are learning or lecturing on the boundary element method.

Book Complex Variable Methods In Plane Elasticity

Download or read book Complex Variable Methods In Plane Elasticity written by Jian-ke Lu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-09-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals systematically with the mathematical theory of plane elasto-statics by using complex variable methods, together with many results originated by the author. The problems considered are reduced to integral equations, Fredholem or singular, which are rigorously proved to be uniquely solvable. Particular attention is paid to the subjects of crack problems in the quite general case, especially those of composite media, which are solved by a unified method. The methods used in this book are constructive so that they may be used in practice.

Book Stress Concentration at Notches

Download or read book Stress Concentration at Notches written by Mykhaylo P. Savruk and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compiles solutions of linear theory of elasticity problems for isotropic and anisotropic bodies with sharp and rounded notches. It contains an overview of established and recent achievements, and presents the authors’ original solutions in the field considered with extensive discussion. The volume demonstrates through numerous, useful examples the effectiveness of singular integral equations for obtaining exact solutions of boundary problems of the theory of elasticity for bodies with cracks and notches. Incorporating analytical and numerical solutions of the problems of stress concentrations in solid bodies with crack-like defects, this volume is ideal for scientists and PhD students dealing with the problems of theory of elasticity and fracture mechanics.

Book excerpt: Although there are several books in print dealing with elasticity, many focus on specialized topics such as mathematical foundations, anisotropic materials, two-dimensional problems, thermoelasticity, non-linear theory, etc. As such they are not appropriate candidates for a general textbook. This book provides a concise and organized presentation and development of general theory of elasticity. This text is an excellent book teaching guide. Contains exercises for student engagement as well as the integration and use of MATLAB Software Provides development of common solution methodologies and a systematic review of analytical solutions useful in applications of

Book Structural Mechanics

Download or read book Structural Mechanics written by Alberto Carpinteri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a complete and unified treatment of the fundamental themes of structural mechanics, ranging from the traditional to the most advanced topics, covering mechanics of linear elastic solids, theory of beam systems, and phenomena of structural failure. The book considers explicitly all the static and kenetic operators of structural mechanics with their dual character. Topics relating to structural symmetry are covered in a single chapter while dynamics is dealt with at various points. The logical presentation allows the clear introduction of topics such as finite element methods, automatic calculation of framed beam systems, plate and shell theory, theory of plasticity, and fracture mechanics. Numerous worked examples, exercises with complete solutions and illustrations make it accessible both as a text for students and as a reference for research workers and practicing engineers.

Download or read book Antiplane Elastic Systems written by Louis M. Milne-Thomson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term antiplane was introduced by L. N. G. FlLON to describe such problems as tension, push, bending by couples, torsion, and flexure by a transverse load. Looked at physically these problems differ from those of plane elasticity already treated * in that certain shearing stresses no longer vanish. This book is concerned with antiplane elastic systems in equilibrium or in steady motion within the framework of the linear theory, and is based upon lectures given at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, to officers of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors, and on technical reports recently published at the Mathematics Research Center, United States Army. My aim has been to tackle each problem, as far as possible, by direct rather than inverse or guessing methods. Here the complex variable again assumes an important role by simplifying equations and by introducing order into much of the treatment of anisotropic material. The work begins with an introduction to tensors by an intrinsic method which starts from a new and simple definition. This enables elastic properties to be stated with conciseness and physical clarity. This course in no way commits the reader to the exclusive use of tensor calculus, for the structure so built up merges into a more familiar form. Nevertheless it is believed that the tensor methods outlined here will prove useful also in other branches of applied mathematics.

Book Modelling of Mechanical Systems Structural Elements

Download or read book Modelling of Mechanical Systems Structural Elements written by Francois Axisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-08-22 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modelling of mechanical systems provides engineers and students with the methods to model and understand mechanical systems by using both mathematical and computer-based tools. Written by an eminent authority in the field, this is the second of four volumes which provide engineers with a comprehensive resource on this cornerstone mechanical engineering subject. Dealing with continuous systems, this book covers solid mechanics, beams, plates and shells. In a clear style and with a practical rather than theoretical approach, it shows how to model continuous systems in order to study vibration modes, motion and forces. Appendices give useful primers on aspects of the mathematics introduced in the book. Other volumes in the series cover discrete systems, fluid-structure interaction and flow-induced vibration. * Axisa is a world authority in the modelling of systems* Comprehensive coverage of mathematical techniques used to perform computer-based analytical studies and numerical simulations* A key reference for mechanical engineers, researchers and graduate students in this cornerstone subject
