Book excerpt: Planarian Regeneration deals with regeneration problems including embryogenesis and morphogenesis. The book compares the principles involved in the regeneration processes with those in ontogenesis from the egg. The author also reviews the works of Thomas H. Morgan and Charles M. Child which became the basis for systematic scientific investigation of regeneration. The head regenerates vigorously, with a faster rate behind the eyes, then at various levels along the longitudinal axis of the planarian body. A time-graded regeneration includes inhibitory forces and some genetic codes that determine such rate. The time-graded field has been proven by transplantation experiments; the author addresses the morphological structure to which biochemical factors or processes determine the different rate of regeneration. He notes that the nervous system conforms to these processes as shown by studies of Lender and Klein (1961). The author suggests that the study of regeneration in planarians should involve time considerations quantitatively to explain some substance, if any, from the nervous system that activates the cytoplasm of neoblasts, and then the genome. This book will prove valuable for zoologists and researchers in genetics, biochemistry or molecular biology.

Download or read book The Body Electric written by Robert Becker and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1998-07-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Body Electric tells the fascinating story of our bioelectric selves. Robert O. Becker, a pioneer in the filed of regeneration and its relationship to electrical currents in living things, challenges the established mechanistic understanding of the body. He found clues to the healing process in the long-discarded theory that electricity is vital to life. But as exciting as Becker's discoveries are, pointing to the day when human limbs, spinal cords, and organs may be regenerated after they have been damaged, equally fascinating is the story of Becker's struggle to do such original work. The Body Electric explores new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, psychic phenomena, and healing.

Download or read book Invertebrate Learning written by William Corning and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the second volume of Comparative Psychology by Warden, Warner, and Jenkins (1940), there has not been a comprehensive review of invertebrate learning capacities. Some high-quality reviews have appeared in various journals, texts, and symposia, but they have been, of necessity, incomplete and selective either in terms of the phyla covered or the phenomena which were reviewed. Although this lack has served as a stimulus for the present series, the primary justification is to be found in the resurgence of theoretical and empirical interests in learning capacities and mechanisms in simpler systems of widely different phylogenetic origin. Intensive research on the physiological basis of learning and memory clearly entails exploration of the correlations between levels of nervous system organization and be havioral plasticity. Furthermore, the presence of structural-functional differ entiation in ganglionated systems, the existence of giant, easily identifiable cells, and the reduced complexity of structure and behavior repertoires are among the advantages of the "simple systems" strategy which have caused many neuroscientists to abandon their cats, rats, and monkeys in favor of mollusks, leeches, planaria, crayfish, protozoa, and other invertebrate preparations. Behavioral research continues to reveal remarkable capacities in these simple organisms and encourages us to believe that the confluence of the invertebrate learning data with the more voluminous vertebrate litera ture will contribute substantially to the enrichment of all of the neurobe havioral sciences.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Stem Cells written by Thomas C.G. Bosch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-03 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of our knowledge of stem cells has been inferred from studies of remarkable few species. The ability to manipulate stem cells in “model” organisms such as the mouse and a few other vertebrate species has driven our understanding of basic biology of stem cells. The power and efficiency of studying model organisms, however, comes at a cost since a few species, obviously, do not reflect nature ́s true diversity. Unfortunately, although all multicellular organisms seem to rely on stem cells, and although this seems to be a question of key importance for understanding the evolution of animal life, little is known about stem cells in early-branching taxa. “Stem Cells: From Hydra to Man” illustrates that there is more than human and mouse stem cells to learn from. Reflecting an enormous growth in the knowledge of stem cells in various organisms, the book presents the conceptual language and the nature of questions, as well as a summary of the advances in our understanding of stem cells from a comparative point of view that has resulted from the development of new technology and the development of novel model organisms over the past few decades. As such this book is largely a horizon analysis of a frontier rather than a retrospective. It presents an integrative approach to animal stem cells and covers the major contributions, tools and trends in a newly emerging field: comparative stem cell biology.

Audience: These papers present the advanced student and serious researcher with up to date information on an important, but often neglected group whose place in the animal kingdom demands greater attention.

Book Stem Cells in Marine Organisms

Download or read book Stem Cells in Marine Organisms written by Baruch Rinkevich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-03 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do real stem cells and stem cell lineages exist in lower organisms? Can stem cells from one organism parasitize the soma and/or the germ line of conspecifics? Can differentiated cells in marine organisms be re-programmed to regenerate tissues, organs and appendages through novel de-differentiation, transdifferentiation, or re-differentiation processes, leading to virtually all three germ layers, including the germline? The positive answers to above questions open a new avenue in stem cell research: the biology of stem cells in marine organisms. It is therefore unfortunate that while the literature on stem cell from terrestrial organisms is rich and expanding at an exponential rate, investigations on marine organisms’ stem cells are very limited and scarce. By presenting theoretical chapters, overview essays and specific research results, this book summarises the knowledge and the hypotheses on stem cells in marine organisms through major phyla and specific model organisms. The study on stem cells from marine invertebrates may shed lights on mechanisms promoting immunity, developmental biology, regeneration and budding processes in marine invertebrates, body maintenance, aging and senescence. It aims in encouraging a larger scientific community to follow and study the novel phenomena of stem cells behaviours as depicted from the few currently studied marine invertebrates.

Book Principles of Regeneration

Download or read book Principles of Regeneration written by Richard J. Goss and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Regeneration focuses on the principles, methodologies, and changes involved in the process of regeneration. The book first underscores the nature of the nucleus in Acetabularia, enzyme effects, role of ribonucleic acid in morphogenesis, and functions of the stentor. The text then takes a look at the turnover in hydroids and flatworms and regeneration blastema.
