Book excerpt: Durante 1969-1970 se llevo a cabo en la Estación Experimental Quilamapu, Chillán, la siguiente experiencia, con los objetivos que a continuación se indican -Desarrollar un plan forrajero para ganado bovino de carne, usando las principales especies forrajeras existentes en la zona Centro Sur de Chile. - Elaborar dentro del plan forrajero algunos sistemas de producción de carne para novillos holando-europeos nacidos en primavera. - Determinar la influencia de tres niveles de ganancia (alto, medio y mantención) durante la etapa 8-12 meses del novillo, producen en el sistema completo de producción de carne. De los resultados obtenidos, podemos concluir que: - Según el sistema animal utilizado se produce una variación en la carga animal, el tiempo necesario para lograr los 500 kg de peso, la producción por hectárea y la relación entre suelo para pradera de pastoreo y suelo para cosecha de forraje. - Mientras mayor es el uso de subproductos, mayor es el rendimiento por hectátreas. La producción de carne por hectárea para el año redondo es de 838-978 kg al depender sólo de forrajes. Al suplementar con subproductos durante dos inviernos la producción por hectárea alcanza a casi dos toneladas de peso vivo. - En el sistema de venta a los 19-20 meses, el nivel de gaancia media (uso de heno) disminuye en cierta medidad la producción por hectárea comparando con el nivel de mantención (pastoreo solo), pero presenta la ventaja de lograrse un animal con mayor peso de comercialización. Por otro lado, en caso de engorda final, el nivel medio permite alcanzar 500 kg a los 2 años sin necesidad de una etapa posterior de pastoreo, lo cual aumenta la carga y por consiguiente la producción por hectárea cuando se compara con el nivel de mantención.

Book excerpt: En la Estación Experimental Quilamapu Chillán, se realizó un experimento con el objeto de obtener antecedentes iniciales que permitan delinear un sistema de producción de carne en base a novillos Hereford nacidos durante la primavera en la región de la costa y llevados al valle central (Chillán) después del destete, para completar peso de mercado. Pasando después por tres etapas: 1. Primer invierno, los novillos se sometieron a 2 tratamientos de alimentación: a. pastoreo invernal más coseta seca-afrecho de raps, con una ganancia de 0,62 kg/nov/día y b. pastoreo invernal más heno, con una ganancia de 0,36 kg/nov/día.; 2. Pastoreo primavera-verano-otoño y 3. Engorda final corta. Los principales resultados son: -En el tratamiento b los animales demoraron 20 días más que el tratamiento a, para lograr 400 kg de peso vivo.; -Se produjeron novillos Hereford de 400 kg de peso vivo a los 21-21 1/2 meses de edad. Para alcanzar lo anterior, fue necesario una engorda corta (2-2 1/2 meses) durante el segundo invierno.; -El bajo peso de los terneros al destete parece ser la principal limitante para alcanzar los 400 kg P.V. sin engorda final con suplementos en este sistema.; -Mediante alimentación basadas en forrajes, fue posible obtener una producción de carne de 750 kg de peso vivo/há. en el valle central.; -Debido al efecto de crecimiento compensatorio no se justifica tratar de obtener altas ganancias de peso durante el primer invierno.

In 1969 when the Convention for the Conservation of the Vicuña was drafted, in an attempt to save the vicuña from its tumbling decline towards extinction, both the science and the philosophy of wildlife conservation were radically different. It is thus a tribute to the prescience of those involved at the time that the rescue plan had, even through the harsh lens of hindsight, a d- tinctly Twenty First Century flavour. After all, it was predicated on the expectation that if vicuña could be saved, they would one day become a valued asset, generating revenue for the human communities that fostered their survival. Embodied in this aspiration are the main structures of modern biodiversity conservation – not only is it to be underpinned by science, but that science should be of both the natural and the social genres, woven into inter-disciplinarity, and thereby taking heed of e- nomics, governance, ownership and the like, alongside biology. In addition, it should include, as a major strut, the human dimension, taking account of the affected constituencies with their varied stakes in alternative outcomes. This c- temporary framework for thinking about biodiversity conservation is inseparable from such wider, and inherently political, notions as community-based conser- tion and ultimately sustainable use.
