Book excerpt: Le saumon atlantique anadrome est sans contredit l'espèce qui suscite le plus de passion chez les pêcheurs et qui bénéficie de la plus grande attention de la part des gestionnaires de la ressource faunique en raison de la complexité de son cycle vital et de sa vulnérabilité aux changements de son habitat. [...] La proportion de mâles et de femelles au sein de ces catégories varie d'une rivière à l'autre, et ce, en particulier en fonction de la proportion de petits et de grands saumons dans la population. [...] À cet effet, le Ministère s'occupe de l'allocation, de la gestion et de la protection de la ressource. [...] Les montaisons de saumons dans la région de la Côte-Nord et du Nord-du-Québec sont relativement moins documentées que celles des autres régions du Québec en raison notamment de la teinte foncée de l'eau des rivières qui nuit à la réalisation des décomptes en apnée ou en canot, de la faible proportion de rivières à saumon possédant des barrages et donc des passes migratoires ainsi qu'en raison de l [...] À l'été 2014, les très faibles montaisons enregistrées en première moitié de saison dans la presque totalité des rivières du Québec avaient d'ailleurs justifié l'imposition de la remise à l'eau des grands saumons durant la deuxième moitié de la saison, et ce, dans l'ensemble des rivières à saumon de la Capitale-Nationale, du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, du Bas-Saint-Laurent, de la Gaspésie et de la Cô.

Book excerpt: Environmental DNA (eDNA) refers to DNA that can be extracted from environmental samples (such as soil, water, feces, or air) without the prior isolation of any target organism. The analysis of environmental DNA has the potential of providing high-throughput information on taxa and functional genes in a given environment, and is easily amenable to the study of both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. It can provide an understanding of past or present biological communities as well as their trophic relationships, and can thus offer useful insights into ecosystem functioning. There is now a rapidly-growing interest amongst biologists in applying analysis of environmental DNA to their own research. However, good practices and protocols dealing with environmental DNA are currently widely dispersed across numerous papers, with many of them presenting only preliminary results and using a diversity of methods. In this context, the principal objective of this practical handbook is to provide biologists (both students and researchers) with the scientific background necessary to assist with the understanding and implementation of best practices and analyses based on environmental DNA.
