Book Elements of Rhetoric

Download or read book Elements of Rhetoric written by Alphonso Gerald Newcomer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Rhetoric: A Course in Plain Prose Composition This book differs from most treatises upon rhetoric and composition in two particulars - arrangement, and proportion. The common order is reversed, and the study of words, instead of being put first, is put last, while at the outset attention is centred upon methods of gathering and ordering material. The reason for this should be plain. Composition must begin with ideas. Diction is the very last consideration in the process of constructing an essay - it may even be reserved until revision. If words be thrust first upon the attention, the student naturally supposes that words, instead of the ideas behind them, are his raw material. Composition becomes to him wholly an artificial thing. Freshness, independence, naturalness, ease, are put far from him, perhaps never to be attained. It is a matter of history that, excepting here and there a Pater and a Stevenson, our masters of letters have not come into their kingdom through wrestling with words. Such I offer as the main defense of this book, and reason for its being. The proportion of parts has been determined both by the foregoing consideration and by experience. The bulk of matter in our rhetorics is traditionary and, except for higher, critical purposes, useless. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Principles of Composition Classic Reprint written by Henry G. Pearson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Composition This book has been written to meet the requirement of the course in English Composition given to students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the first term of the Freshman year. The course covers sixteen weeks, and the class meets twice a week. The course consists of written work and recitations. For the first of these each student is expected to write every week, outside the class, a theme of from three to four hundred words in length. This theme is delivered to the instructor at the beginning of one of the exercises, is read by him, and at the next exercise is handed back, with his criticisms written upon it. In accordance with these criticisms the student revises his work, in the first part of the term by rewriting the whole theme in the classroom under the eye of the instructor, and later by making on the original copy the changes indicated. The oral work consists of recitations on the substance of the textbook, and the discussion of such errors as the students have shown themselves most prone to commit. Book The Structure of English Prose

Download or read book The Structure of English Prose written by John George Repplier McElroy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Structure of English Prose: A Manual of Composition and Rhetoric The teacher of Rhetoric has a double office. First, and chiefly, he must make writers; secondly, he must so exhibit the laws of his art as to promote mental discipline. In other words, he must be practical, without being a mere empiricist; he must be rational, without for an instant losing sight of skill in composition. With these views in mind, I have tried to fill what seemed to me an empty place among books on Rhetoric. None of them, I thought, aimed at practical results, without sacrificing too far the principles of the art; none of them taught these principles in their fullness, without sacrificing in part or in whole the practical side of the work. I have aimed to strike the happy medium, - to make a book that shall teach composition while it forces the student to think, and shall exhibit the principles of the art at the same time that it keeps uppermost the problem How to Write. I have adopted Dr. Shedd's words quoted on my title-page, accepting fully the doctrine that Thought is more than Style, and modifying this doctrine by only one other truth - a truth to which Dr. Shedd would doubtless equally assent - that worthy thought deserves, as it promotes, an excellent form. This, by the way, is Herbert Spencer's opinion, too. Though he extols practice, he adds, "Never with the principles of style. If in no other way, yet, as facilitating revision, a knowledge of the thing to be achieved - a clear idea of what constitutes a beauty, and what a blemish - can not fail to be of service." I have also tried to exhibit the laws of Rhetoric in their entirety, - not the laws of Style alone, but also those of Invention. However we may quibble about that word Invention in its rhetorical sense, Rhetoric does teach other laws than those of Form; and these laws must be exhibited, if the art is to be taught fully. I admit freely that, in a book whose chief aim is skill in composition, Invention will occupy a considerably less number of pages than Style; and, hence, even after saying what I have said of the superior importance of Invention [ 32], I have given by far the greater portion of my whole space to Style. Book A Progressive Course in English Literature Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Progressive Course in English Literature Composition Classic Reprint written by Charles Maurice Stebbins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Progressive Course in English Literature Composition IN this volume an attempt has been made to bring into close natural relations elementary work in litera ture and composition. The primary principles of rhetoric have been developed inductively, and applied immediately to the work in literature and composi tion. As in the other books of this series, as much opportunity as possible has been given to the pupil for the cultivation of his powers of self-discovery and self-expression. It has also been the aim of the writer to make this, in reality, a progressive course in English. Not only does the subject-matter proceed from the simple to the complex in the order of the subjects treated; but in the treatment of the various subjects, the advance ment goes forward a single step at a time. Funda mental elements are treated first in every case, suggestive helps being given until such time as the pupil should be able to do without them. This makes it possible for the teacher to omit any chapter or to take any chapter in an order different from that of the book, if he so desires. Book A Modern Composition and Rhetoric

Download or read book A Modern Composition and Rhetoric written by Lewis Worthington Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Modern Composition and Rhetoric: Brief Course; Containing the Principles of Correct English for Schools Nearly two thousand years ago Quintilian defined rhetoric as the art of speaking well. Had he lived in the present age, he would undoubtedly have said, the art of speaklng and' of writing well. No better phrase can be found to describe the true function of rhetoric to-day. Previous to the last decade it was regarded as an ornamental study, abounding in theory and subtle dis tinctions of diction and style. With the development of the study of English in the schools came an awakening to the true value of rhetoric, and its relation to the study of literature and composition. To-day rhetoric and com position are inseparably associated in teaching the methods of simple, direct, and accurate expression, the principle of one being supplemented by the abundant practice of the other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing English Prose In order better to understand the nature of the study of formal English composition, let us give a brief account of the medium of writing in English, and of certain general conditions that accompany the act. Many of these are common, as will appear, to writing in all languages, and also to speaking. On them all sensible study of English composi tion must be based; you cannot get away from them; and any theory of writing that tried to avoid them would be wild and useless.
