Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A product of the "spiritual hothouse" of the Second Great Awakening, Spiritualism became the fastest growing religion in the nation during the 1850s, and one of the principal responses to the widespread perception that American society was descending into atomistic particularity. In Body and Soul, Robert Cox shows how Spiritualism sought to transform sympathy into social practice, arguing that each individual, living and dead, was poised within a nexus of affect, and through the active propagation of these sympathetic bonds, a new and coherent society would emerge. Phenomena such as spontaneous somnambulism and sympathetic communion with the dead—whether through séance or "spirit photography"—were ways of transcending the barriers dissecting the American body politic, including the ultimate barrier, death. Drawing equally upon social, occult, and physiological registers, Spiritualism created a unique "social physiology" in which mind was integrated into body and body into society, leading Spiritualists into earthly social reforms, such as women’s rights and anti-slavery. From the beginning, however, Spiritualist political and social expression was far more diverse than has previously been recognized, encompassing distinctive proslavery and antiegalitarian strains, and in the wake of racial and political adjustments following the Civil War, the movement began to fracture. Cox traces the eventual dissolution of Spiritualism through the contradictions of its various regional and racial factions and through their increasingly circumscribed responses to a changing world. In the end, he concludes, the history of Spiritualism was written in the limits of sympathy, and not its limitless potential.

Book Introduction to New and Alternative Religions in America

Download or read book Introduction to New and Alternative Religions in America written by William M. Ashcraft and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most new or alternative religious are gravely misunderstood by members of the religious mainstream. Labeled cults or sects, groups and their members are often ridiculed or otherwise disregarded as weird and potentially dangerous by the populace at large. Despite their efforts at educating the general public, the various anti- and counter-cult activists have in fact promoted much more mis-understanding than accurate understanding of the religious lives of some of their fellow citizens. Consequently, they have helped to create a very hostile environment for anyone whose religious practices do not fit within a so-called mainstream. This set rectifies the situation by presenting accurate, comprehensive, authoritative and accessible accounts of various new and alternative religious movements that have been and are active in American society, and it addresses ways of understanding new and alternative religions within a broader context. Determining what actually constitutes a new or alternative religion is a subject of constant debate. Questions arise as to a new faith's legitimacy, beliefs, methods of conversion, and other facets of a religious movement's viability and place in a given culture. How a religion gains recognition by the mainstream, which often labels such new movements as cults, is fraught with difficulty, tension, and fear. Here, experts delineate the boundaries and examine the various groups, beliefs, movements, and other issues related to new faiths and alternative beliefs. Readers will come away with a fuller understanding of the religious landscape in America today. Volume 1: History and Controversies discusses the foundations of new and alternative religions in the United States and addresses the controversies that surround them. This volume helps readers better understand what makes a new or alternative belief system a religion and the issues involved. Volume 2: Jewish and Christian Traditions explores the various new religions that have grown out of these two Abrahamic faiths. Groups such as the Shakers, the People's Temple, the Branch Davidians, Jehovah's Witnesses and others are examined. Volume 3: Metaphysical, New Age, and Neopagan Movements looks at Shamanism, Spiritualism, Wicca, and Paganism, among other movements, as they have developed and grown in the U.S. These faiths have found new and devoted followers yet are often misunderstood. Volume 4: Asian Traditions focuses on those new and alternative religions that have been inspired by Asian religious traditions. From Baha'i to Soka Gakkai, from Adidam to the Vedanta Society, contributors look at a full range of groups practicing and worshiping in the U.S. today. Volume 5: African Diaspora Traditions and Other American Innovations examines the various traditions linked to the African diaspora such as Rastafarianism, Santeria, and the Nation of Islam, alongside traditions that are truly American incarnations like Scientology, UFO religions, and Heaven's Gate. Some of the new and alternative religions covered in these pages include: ; Shamanism ; Wicca ; Black Israelites ; Santeria ; Scientology ; Elan Vital ; Hare Krishna ; Soka Gakkai ; and many more

Book excerpt: Spiritualism is a religious denomination, a science, a philosophy and a way of life; it is based on the fact that not only is life eternal, but this can be proved. As a religious denomination it is progressive and is considered by many to be the basis for all spiritual religions' belief systems. As a philosophy it is clear and accessible, and as a way of life it brings an element of joy into every nook and cranny of everyone's pathway through life on earth. Spiritualism itself was born of the northern hemisphere of our planet, although its phenomena are universal and timeless and the truths that it has revealed are as old as the earth itself. So how does Spiritualism prove that every human being, as well as every other creature, lives forever? This is established through mediumship. This book is a collection of facts, information and workshops. Whether you are a keen novice, or a practised veteran of Spiritualism, this book has all you need to walk the Spiritualist path, or even set up your own NSS church.

Book A Beginner s Guide to Spirituality

Download or read book A Beginner s Guide to Spirituality written by Abhishek Chaturbedi and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light and darkness. Up and down. In and out. Body and soul. One and all. But what if light is darkness, up is down, in is out, body is soul, and one is all? A Beginner’s Guide to Spirituality opens unique and deep scenarios on humanity’s timeless questions. Who are we? What is “we”? Is there a significance to existence? Scientists, philosophers, and even believers tried to find an answer to these inquiries, but, in their search for the truth, often sectioned and tore apart the concept of reality, missing what only a broader view, a gaze upon the unity of reality itself, could give them. Commonality between religion, science and spirituality. In general, they are considered separate entities, but is our lack of clarity on these subjects that makes them look different. This remarkable dissertation on the nature of all things contemplates on subjects as the essence of God, and the inexact, if not superstitious, notions that have always accompanied the human perception of this superior, holy entity. God didn’t just create everything that exists. God is everything that exists. So why are things such as evil, illnesses, and pain allowed to take place? To show the way towards a response, the author takes his readers’ hands to gently guide them along the path of self-consciousness, expressing the invite to explore both the inner and outer manifestations of life and to experience the daily passing of time as more than a simple materialistic, raw, and unaware survival. Abhishek Chaturbedi’s literary work is at the same time a philosophical essay and a guide that avoids hyperbolic intellectual discussions, theological doctrines and complex scientific theories, so that the readers can easily grasp the book’s message. A Beginner’s Guide to Spirituality will help all those souls that, still lost, are searching for the path towards inner peace. Dr. Abhishek Chaturbedi is a native of Nepal but considers himself a citizen of the world. He is fondly referred to by the nickname “Abhi”. He has spent significant numbers of years in the USA and India. He is a neurosurgeon and neuroscientist by profession. He is also a family man. His primary goal in life is to be a spiritual guide, then a good neurosurgeon and neuroscientist, and a family man. He denies being branded to any religion, race, or ideology. He wrote A Beginner’s Guide to Spirituality with the desire of helping humanity to understand life better and motivate people to be a Good Samaritan.

Book Spirituality for the Skeptic

Download or read book Spirituality for the Skeptic written by Robert C. Solomon and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-16 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to be spiritual and yet not believe in the supernatural? Can a person be spiritual without belonging to a religious group or organization? In this book, philosopher Robert Solomon offers challenging answers to these questions as he explodes commonly held myths about what is means to be spiritual in today's pluralistic world. Based on Solomon's own struggles to reconcile philosophy with religion, Spirituality for the Skeptic offers a model of a vibrant, fulfilling spirituality that embraces the complexities of human existence and acknowledges the joys and tragedies of life. Solomon has forged an enlightened new path that synthesizes spirituality with emotions, intellect, science, and common sense. His new paradigm, "naturalized" spirituality, establishes as its cornerstone the "thoughtful love of life"--a passionate concern for the here-and-now, and not the by-and-by. Being spiritual doesn't mean being holed up as a recluse, spending hours in meditation and contemplation, Solomon argues. It demands involvement and emotional engagement with others in the struggle to find meaning in our lives. As such, this modern-day spirituality encompasses a passionate enthusiasm for the world, the transformation of self, cosmic trust and rationality, coming to terms with fate, and viewing life as a gift, all of which are explored in depth throughout this book. Spirituality for the Skeptic answers the need for a non-institutional, non-dogmatic spirituality that leads to personal fulfillment and satisfaction. By examining the ideas of great thinkers from Socrates and Nietzsche to Buddha to Kafka, Solomon arrives at a practical vision of spirituality that should appeal to many seekers looking to make sense of the human condition.
