The next meeting be held, the congregation was ad dressed ou the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. This was a new and a strange thing brought to the ears of this generation. The eyes of the people, however, were opened to understand the scriptures, which testify of the work of the Lord in the last days, and the manner of its aecom plishment. The visions of the prophets were unfolded, and many 0 our eyes. Which altog and we discovered that th without hands. And which earth, had already began chosen the foolish things the wise, and the weak things he mighty. Other appointments to preach were made in other places, in the neighbourhood; and the same commotion which the an cient gospel produced, was found still to accompany its promulgation. Some received the truth in the love of it, others used every exertion to withstand it. After I had heard several discourses on the fulness of the gospel, I felt anxious to ally myself to a people who were every where spoken against, and sought the earliest opportunity of doing it; accordingly, I went forward and was baptised. This was in the month of J anuary. 1833; shortly after this. Quite a number, seventy or eighty, were baptised and added to the church. This Element explores the history of this movement from its origins in the anti-heresy writings of the early church to its modern development as a reaction to religious pluralism in North America. It contrasts the apologetic Christian countercult movement with its secular anticult counterpart and explains how faith-based opposition both to new religious movements and to non-Christian religions will only deepen as religious pluralism increases. It provides a concise understanding of the two principal goals of Christian countercult apologetics: support for the evangelization of non-Christian believers and maintenance for the perceived superiority of the evangelical Christian worldview.
