Download or read book Decisions Agency and Advising written by Tanita Saenkhum and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisions, Agency, and Advising considers the role of students’ own agency in the placement of multilingual writers—including international students and US residents or citizens who are nonnative users of English—in US college composition programs. Grounded in qualitative research and concerned equally with theory and practice, the book explores how multilingual students exercise agency in their placement decisions and how student agency can inform the overall programmatic placement of multilingual students into first-year composition courses. Tanita Saenkhum follows eleven multilingual students who made their decisions about placement into first-year composition courses during one academic year at a large public university. She identifies the need for the process of making placement decisions to be understood more clearly, describes how to use that knowledge to improve placement practices for these students—particularly in advising—and offers hands-on recommendations for writing programs. Decisions, Agency, and Advising is a significant contribution to the field and particularly valuable to writing program administrators, academic advisors, writing teachers, researchers investigating second language writing and writing program administration, composition and second language writing scholars, and graduate students.
Download or read book The Brand Called You written by Ashutosh Garg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no one else in the world like you. Your personal brand has been registered in your name and patented with your persona even though there may be hundreds of people carrying the same name. Creating, building, and developing your personal brand is entirely in your own hands. Conversely, destroying or diminishing your brand is also only in your own hands. Your brand is the essence of your own unique story. The key to this is reaching deep inside yourself and pulling out the authentic, the unique 'you', from within your own self. What we do with our own brand name could be the difference between being very successful and not so successful. This is as true for personal branding as it is for business branding. The Brand Called You outlines how critical it is for each one of us to understand the power and vulnerabilities of our brand and invest wisely and consistently in our persona and our name. Remember, the only legacy you will leave behind in the world is your name.

Download or read book The New Global Universities written by Bryan Penprase and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reimagining higher education around the world: lessons from the creation of eight new colleges and universities in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and North America Higher education is perpetually in crisis, buffeted by increasing costs and a perceived lack of return on investment, campus culture that is criticized for stifling debate on controversial topics, and a growing sense that the liberal arts are outmoded and irrelevant. Some observers even put higher education on the brink of death. The New Global Universities offers a counterargument, telling the story of educational leaders who have chosen not to give up on higher education but to reimagine it. The book chronicles the development and launch of eight innovative colleges and universities in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and North America, describing the combination of intellectual courage, entrepreneurial audacity, and adaptive leadership needed to invent educational institutions today. The authors, both academic leaders who have been involved in launching ventures similar to the ones described, offer a unique inside perspective on these efforts. Bryan Penprase and Noah Pickus show how the founders of new colleges and universities establish distinctive brands in a sector dominated by centuries-old institutions, secure creative sources of funding, attract stellar faculty and students, and design appealing curriculums and campuses—all while managing tradeoffs and setbacks, balancing local needs and global aspirations, and wrestling with challenges to academic freedom. These new educational institutions include two universities in Asia and the Middle East built by well-established American parent institutions, others in Africa and North America that offer holistic reform from the ground up and leverage new technologies to lower costs, and still others that adapted the American liberal arts model to Asian and African contexts. Their experiences offer lessons for future founders of new universities—and for those who want to renew and rejuvenate existing ones.
Download or read book Managing Projects at Work written by Gordon Webster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for all managers, in any function, who are tasked with delivering projects at work. It is of particular interest to those managers who have to deal with small- to medium-sized projects in addition to their usual responsibilities. Straightforward and user friendly, this book takes the reader through a series of steps which results in the effective delivery of a project. Managing Projects at Work breaks down into two stages. By the end of stage one the reader will know how to build a ’Defensible Plan’ for successful project implementation. This process, which follows a step-by-step sequence, draws out in a unique way all the resources and support needed for an effective project delivery. The outcome is a confident project manager who can justify and secure what is needed for the stress-free implementation of the project. Stage two deals with implementing the ’Defensible Plan’ under proper control, through motivated and well-led people. Gordon Webster’s approach suits projects as diverse as introducing new systems or procedures, launching a new product, opening a new branch, factory or department; even organizing a conference or moving offices. Its practical methodology has been developed as a result of working over many years with managers whose projects had gone off track, usually for the same reasons. From these observations the unique and entirely effective ’Defensible Plan’ and its implementation were born. By adopting this approach readers can build in success from the beginning and see consistent project delivery, along with control of their working life.

Download or read book Language in Use written by Loredana Frăţilă and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language in Use: The Case of Youth Entertainment Magazines is a collection of seven studies by several Romanian, Bulgarian and Slovenian linguists on the discourse of entertainment magazines targeted at young readers, and published in their respective countries. The starting point of the seven studies was the idea that the discourse specific to the variety of printed media products selected for analysis was characterized by distinctive features and that these features might exert a manipulative influence on the linguistic and social behavior of the targeted readership. The scholars’ initial aim was to validate these hypotheses and to confirm their soundness across countries. However, they hope that, besides suggesting new perspectives on the discourse chosen for analysis and thus filling a gap in the eastern European literature in the field, they may also develop (admittedly, within limits) media literacy in young readers, by equipping them with skills that could transform them from passive media consumers into responsible readers, able to make informed decisions and thus be less vulnerable to the strategies of manipulation employed by those who control information.
