Book excerpt: San Juan County landscapes are most often seen through car windows during travels on paved roads. Routine trips on these routes render the landscapes so familiar they become almost invisible environmental backdrops. They are, of course, far more important than background beauty. They provide us with places for shelter, work and play. They also provide natural resources that sustain life. If you were to make a few hours journey across San Juan County from east to west on US64, you would cross a series of exposed landscapes dating from present day to 245 million years in the past. the arrival of the first people to settle in San Juan Country took place 6,000 years ago. They were the first to give the landscape places identity names. What those names were we shall never know. Nor do we know what names the Chaco Culture people might have assigned them. These ancients left no written record. The earliest names that appear in this book are Navajo, followed by Spanish, and lastly English. This book of Landscape Place Names San Juan County contains 550 names with brief descriptions of their origin and history. Maps are provided to mark their general locations within nine geographic sectors of the county. Photographs are included to provide visual peeks at a few special places.
