Download or read book Exiles and Islanders written by Brendan O'Grady and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2004-08-17 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exiles and Islanders describes Irish settlement in Prince Edward Island from 1763 to 1880. By tracing the history of these early settlers, Brendan O'Grady demolishes the myth that the Island's Irish settlers were largely refugees from the Great Potato Famine. Using a wide variety of sources, including folklore, newspaper reports, personal interviews, letters, shipping records, and historical data, O'Grady goes beyond mere statistics. We learn about settlers' hometowns in Ireland, why they left, when and how they came to Prince Edward Island, where they settled, and how they adapted to living in PEI. Over ten thousand Irish settled in PEI in the nineteenth century; by 1850 they comprised about a quarter of the Island's population. They were mainly pre-Famine immigrants and mostly Catholic. They came from all thirty-two counties of Ireland and settled in all sixty-seven townships of PEI. They took up farming, fishing, and rural occupations; raised large families; and retained their Irishness for several generations. Exiles and Islanders includes family names and places of origin that will be of particular interest to the Island's Irish descendants. An intriguing cultural history, the book provides new insight into the early settlers of Prince Edward Island.

Book Dictionary of Canadian Place Names

Download or read book Dictionary of Canadian Place Names written by Alan Rayburn and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place names reflect a very significant part of a nation's cultural and linguistic heritage. They are ever-present on road signs and maps, in correspondence and periodicals, and in all kinds of official and unofficial records and documents. Over 6200 names from Canada's rich toponymic tapestry are included in this unique dictionary - not only cities, towns and villages, but lakes, rivers, national parks, well-known mountains and many capes, as well as the actual origin of the place name. Words taken from Cree, Inuit, French, Gaelic, Spanish, Portuguese Mi'kmaq, Basque, German and other languages, as well as the many names echoing the towns and regions that fond immigrants had left behind, reflect Canada's diverse multicultural heritage. Many places were named after people who played a role in local history, or more celebrated heroes of foreign affairs. In these cases, brief biographical details identify such eponymous individuals as the poet Robert Service, or Mary March, the English name given to Demasduit, Beothuk wife of Chief Nonosbawsut, whose capture by local settlers led to her death in 1820 - one of the last of her now extinct race. A surprising number of places were named after battles and military leaders, many after peculiar features of the landscape, and others for animals, ships, fruit, and native religious beliefs. Anyone who has felt curious about the choice of names like South Porcupine, Dildo, Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo Jump, Magnetic Hill, or Saint-Lous-du-Ha! Ha!, will find much of interest in this book.

Book The Concise Dictionary of World Place Names

Download or read book The Concise Dictionary of World Place Names written by John Everett-Heath and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 1575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every populated place, however small, has a name, and every name is chosen for a reason. This fascinating dictionary gives the history, meanings, and origin of an enormous range of country, region, island, city, and town names from across the world, as well as the name in the local language. It also includes key historical facts associated with many place names. Place-names are continually changing. New names are adopted for many different reasons such as invasion, revolution, and decolonization. This dictionary includes selected former names, and, where appropriate, some historical detail to explain the transition. The names of places often offer a real insight into the places themselves, revealing religious and cultural traditions, the migration of peoples, the ebb and flow of armies, the presence of explorers, local languages, industrial developments and topography. Superstition and legend can also play a part. All this fascinating detail is included in the Concise Dictionary of World Place Names. In addition to the entries themselves, the dictionary includes two appendices: a glossary of foreign word elements which appear in place names and their meanings, and a list of personalities and leaders from all over the world who have influenced the naming of places. Containing over 10,000 names, from Aachen to Zyrardów, this is a unique and fascinating guide for geographers, travellers, and all with an interest in current world affairs.
