Download or read book The Place Names of Cumberland and Westmorland Classic Reprint written by Walter John Sedgefield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Cumberland and Westmorland Turning to the Irish annals and Scandinavian sagas, we learn that at the end of the ninth century the Vikings appeared for the first time in the Bristol Channel. They landed first in Glamorganshire, but, being repulsed by the Welsh, crossed over to Ireland, the wealth of whose monasteries was famed far and wide. The numerous Irish kings and chiefs, being ever at war with each other, could offer no effectual resistance to the invaders, and thus began the harrying of Ireland by fleet after fleet from Scandinavia, which lasted over a generation. The later invaders were Norwegians, the finn-gaill, or Fair strangers, ' of the Irish annals. They pushed into the interior and set up kingdoms of their own, and it was not until the decisive battle of Clontarf, in 1014, that the Irish finally regained the mastery in their own land. The coasts of Scotland also suffered from incursions, while the islands were completely taken possession of and settled by Norwegians. For centuries they were counted as Norse colonies, a Norway beyond the seas.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This is a concise but comprehensive history of the Viking era. The Vikings, one of Europe's most mystical and fascinating civilizations, have intrigued the West for centuries. Aside from being perceived as a strikingly distinct culture among its European counterparts, what is known and unknown about the Vikings' achievements has added an intriguing aura to the historical narrative. Were they ferocious and terrifying warriors? Were they the first Europeans to set foot in North America? Some legends appear to be true, while others appear to be just that: legends.

Book The Romance of Wisconsin Place Names

Download or read book The Romance of Wisconsin Place Names written by Robert E. Gard and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The names of places lie upon the land and tell us where we are or where we have been or where we want to go. And so much more.”—From the introduction Fifty years ago, educator and writer Robert E. Gard traveled across Wisconsin, learning the trivial, controversial, and landmark stories behind how cities, counties, and local places got their names. This volume records the fruits of Gard’s labors in an alphabetical listing of places from every corner of Wisconsin, and the stories behind their often-unusual names. Gard’s work provides an important snapshot of how Wisconsin residents of a bygone era came to understand the names of their towns and home places, many of which can no longer be found on any map. Celebrated rural historian Jerry Apps introduces this reprint of Gard’s work, saying that in “some ways The Romance of Wisconsin Place Names is a reference book, a place where you can go to learn a little more about your home town. But in many ways it is much more than that, for it includes the stories of places throughout the state, submitted by the people who knew them. It is a book where story, people, and place all come together.”
