Book excerpt: Monasticism in the Mediterranean: Now and Tomorrow In this edition of Telos, the contributors were asked to offer readers their views and their personal stories in monasticism in its present form in in the Mediterranean. The continuing existence of monasticism in the twenty-first century may seem anachronistic to some and a quaint continuity to others. As the contributors to this edition of Telos demonstrate, the monastic call answers a deeper spiritual manifestation in the individual, transcending history. From the Mediterranean origins of this form of monasticism to today's Mediterranean reality, the monk is a comforting reference point, living a labour of love to God's eternal promise With articles by Aldo CAVALLI, Grigorios D. PAPATHOMAS, Salvino BUSUTTIL, Edward G. FARRUGIA, Henri TEISSIER, Robert FOUQUEZ, Frère MARIE PÂQUES.

Book Understanding the Consecrated Life in Canada

Download or read book Understanding the Consecrated Life in Canada written by Jason Zuidema and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the consecrated life in Canada since the 1960s should be about much more than numerical decline. Although the falling numbers are significant among Catholic religious in communities that pre-date Vatican II, many communities continue to show stability and even growth. This book provides nuance to that story by adding detailed portraits of movements, communities and institutions. In four parts, this book presents essays from the leading scholars on religious life in Canada that seek to address the state of religious communities dedicated to religious virtuosity normally characterized by formal promises of chastity, poverty, and obedience. The essays examine a broad range of topics related to the general state of consecrated (or “religious” or “monastic”) life in contemporary Canadian Christian and Buddhist traditions. In the first section, the contributors trace the demographics and definitions of religious life in Canada. The second section examines Canadian developments in Catholic religious life during the Vatican II and the post-Vatican II eras. A third section explores trends in contemporary Canadian religious life, while the fourth section describes the consecrated life in other Canadian religious traditions.

Book Foundations of Power and Conflicts of Authority in Late antique Monasticism

Download or read book Foundations of Power and Conflicts of Authority in Late antique Monasticism written by Alberto Camplani and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume offers the acts of a meeting held at the University of Turin on the foundations of power and the conflicts of authority as documented by the monastic sources of East and West in Late Antiquity, with special reference to Max Weber's analysis of these notions. The issue is here examined from a variety of perspectives: the different meanings of power and authority in ancient monastic sources; the criteria by which authority is established within the monastic organizations; the kind of power and authority exercised towards outsiders; the relationship between monks and other authorities, especially the Church; the monks and their economic activity; the strategies for the solution of conflicts. The wide range of historical and cultural problems raised by these questions is what the present volume tries to illuminate through individual studies of a number of specific phenomena, events, and figures (from Shenute to John Cassian, from Abraham of Kashkar to Maxim the Confessor), paying particular attention to monasticism in Egypt, Palestine, Africa, and Persia.

Book The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West written by Alison I. Beach and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monasticism, in all of its variations, was a feature of almost every landscape in the medieval West. So ubiquitous were religious women and men throughout the Middle Ages that all medievalists encounter monasticism in their intellectual worlds. While there is enormous interest in medieval monasticism among Anglophone scholars, language is often a barrier to accessing some of the most important and groundbreaking research emerging from Europe. The Cambridge History of Medieval Monasticism in the Latin West offers a comprehensive treatment of medieval monasticism, from Late Antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. The essays, specially commissioned for this volume and written by an international team of scholars, with contributors from Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States, cover a range of topics and themes and represent the most up-to-date discoveries on this topic.

Book L historiographie de l Eglise des premiers si cles

Download or read book L historiographie de l Eglise des premiers si cles written by Bernard Pouderon and published by Editions Beauchesne. This book was released on 2001 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Woman Women and the Priesthood in the Trinitarian Theology of Elisabeth Behr Sigel

Download or read book Woman Women and the Priesthood in the Trinitarian Theology of Elisabeth Behr Sigel written by Sarah Hinlicky Wilson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elisabeth Behr-Sigel (1907-2005), a convert to Orthodoxy in her early twenties and a central figure of Orthodox theology among Russian émigrés in Paris, first began to reflect on the question of women in the priesthood in 1976. Initially supporting the general consensus that priesthood would be impossible for the Orthodox, she came to retract this view, finding a basis for female ordination in women's distinct spiritual charisms. Behr-Sigel later shifted the foundation of her case to personhood, inspired by the work of fellow Orthodox theologian Vladimir Lossky, and arrived at the conclusion that all the Orthodox arguments against the ordination of women were, in fact, heretical at root. In this volume, Wilson analyzes all of Behr-Sigel's writings about women and the priesthood across the whole sweep of her career, demonstrating the development of her thought on women over the last thirty years of her life. She evaluates her relationship to feminism, Protestantism and movements within Orthodoxy, finally drawing conclusions about this much-contested matter for the ongoing debate in both the East and the West.

Book Making Early Medieval Societies

Download or read book Making Early Medieval Societies written by Kate Cooper and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Early Medieval Societies explores a fundamental question: what held the small- and large-scale communities of the late Roman and early medieval West together, at a time when the world seemed to be falling apart? Historians and anthropologists have traditionally asked parallel questions about the rise and fall of empires and how societies create a sense of belonging and social order in the absence of strong governmental institutions. This book draws on classic and more recent anthropologists' work to consider dispute settlement and conflict management during and after the end of the Roman Empire. Contributions range across the internecine rivalries of late Roman bishops, the marital disputes of warrior kings, and the tension between religious leaders and the unruly crowds in western Europe after the first millennium - all considering the mechanisms through which conflict could be harnessed as a force for social stability or an engine for social change.
