Book Armed with Abundance

  • Author : Meredith H. Lair
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2011-11-28
  • ISBN : 9780807869185
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Armed with Abundance written by Meredith H. Lair and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular representations of the Vietnam War tend to emphasize violence, deprivation, and trauma. By contrast, in Armed with Abundance, Meredith Lair focuses on the noncombat experiences of U.S. soldiers in Vietnam, redrawing the landscape of the war so that swimming pools, ice cream, visits from celebrities, and other "comforts" share the frame with combat. To address a tenuous morale situation, military authorities, Lair reveals, wielded abundance to insulate soldiers--and, by extension, the American public--from boredom and deprivation, making the project of war perhaps easier and certainly more palatable. The result was dozens of overbuilt bases in South Vietnam that grew more elaborate as the war dragged on. Relying on memoirs, military documents, and G.I. newspapers, Lair finds that consumption and satiety, rather than privation and sacrifice, defined most soldiers' Vietnam deployments. Abundance quarantined the U.S. occupation force from the impoverished people it ostensibly had come to liberate, undermining efforts to win Vietnamese "hearts and minds" and burdening veterans with disappointment that their wartime service did not measure up to public expectations. With an epilogue that finds a similar paradigm at work in Iraq, Armed with Abundance offers a unique and provocative perspective on modern American warfare.

Book The Domino s Story

Download or read book The Domino s Story written by Marcia Layton Turner and published by HarperCollins Leadership. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine if you were there, taking notes, as a small pizza joint became one of the most successful restaurants in the world. The Domino’s Story will help you understand and adopt the competitive strategies, workplace culture, and business practices that made the iconic pizza chain the innovative restaurant and e-commerce leader it is today. As one of the most technologically advanced fast-food chains in the market, Domino's has cemented their reputation for innovation, paved in industry-leading profits. In February 2018, according to Ad Age, Domino's unseated Pizza Hut to become the largest pizza seller worldwide in terms of sales. Rather than just tampering with a recipe that was working, they decided to think outside of the pizza box by creating digital tools that emphasized convenience and put the customer first. For the first time, the adaptable strategies behind the rise and dominance of Domino's are outlined in these pages. Through the story of the Domino's, you’ll learn: How to create meaningful innovation without changing the core of the product that people already love. How to recognize and take advantage of unique opportunities to alleviate your customers’ pain points. How to grow a company by taking a holistic approach to the business. And, the importance of delivering a quality experience that will keep customers calling for more.
