Book Atlas of Wood Bark and Pith Anatomy of Eastern Mediterranean Trees and Shrubs

Download or read book Atlas of Wood Bark and Pith Anatomy of Eastern Mediterranean Trees and Shrubs written by Alan Crivellaro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas presents anatomical descriptions of the xylem, bark and pith of 264 species belonging to 71 families. It highlights the anatomical diversity of trees, shrubs, dwarf shrubs, woody lianas and several of the prominent perennial herbs from the Eastern Mediterranean region, with a focus on the island of Cyprus. The island’s topography and biogeographic history combine to provide a wide range of habitats and diverse flora including widespread, endemic, and ornamental species. The monograph for each species includes a description of the anatomical structures of the stem and twig xylem and the twig’s bark and pith, as well as color micrographs of double-stained sections of each of these plant parts. These entries are accompanied by a photograph and a brief description of the plant including stem wood density, height, habit, flower, leaf and fruit characteristics, and a map showing its geographic and altitudinal distribution in the region. Xylem descriptions follow the IAWA lists of microscopic features for hardwood and softwood identification. For bark and pith descriptions, a new coding system developed by the authors is applied. Lastly, the work offers a key for wood identification that was developed to differentiate between groups of species by using a small number of features that are unambiguous and clearly visible. The atlas will be a valuable guide for botanists, ecologists, foresters, archeologists, horticulturists and paleobotanists.

The sixteen essays offered herein by Franklin's colleagues in archaeology and biblical studies are a fitting tribute to the woman in the pith helmet: an indomitable field archaeologist who describes herself as "happiest with complex stratigraphy" and dedicated to "killing sacred cows."

Book Pioneers in Pith Helmets

Download or read book Pioneers in Pith Helmets written by Martha E. Green and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-08 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delicately laced through this delightfully written story is Martha Green's journey of joy from childhood to retirement. As a little girl, Martha was separated from her family and home, and she felt like "a sparrow alone upon the housetop," and yet the joy of the Lord was her strength. Martha learns to trust her loving Lord to the point where she can say about a crisis, "it was one of those unique happenstances that our Heavenly Father had planned for a purpose unknown to us." Experience the highlights of Martha's 90 years including reunion with her birth family, courtship and marriage, call to Venezuela, birth of four children and the gift of another child, and the joys of pioneer church planting. As you read, you will sense the love of a woman after God's own heart. The journey is summed up by Martha's words, "love and joy, tears and praise mingled together in my heart." For 30 years Martha Green joyfully served the Lord in Venezuela, South America with her husband, Steve. Later they served on the island of Saint Vincent and then in Spain. At age 90, Martha has much to share about walking in the way the Lord establishes. "I would not trade missionary ministry for any other vocation. Missionary life is a great challenge and blessing because we have such a wonderful message to share, as we see the difference it can make in the lives of so many people. Who wouldn't want to be a missionary!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To serve God and Christ faithfully in the midst of a pagan society that exalts power, wealth, and pleasure is the tenor of the prophetic summons to the church in the book of Revelation. Unfortunately, this simple message, as potent today as it was at the end of the first century, is often obscured by misguided, if sincere, interpreters. The present book explores the background issues and lays out the principles that inform a sound approach to this enigmatic writing: its historical and cultural setting, its literary structure, its symbolic code, its core theological concepts, its scheme of last things, and its preachable and teachable points. In dialogue with dispensationalism on the one hand and with the skeptical criticism of it on the other, The Pith of the Apocalypse derives clues for cracking the Apocalypse from the book itself, viewed against the sweep of the biblical prophetic tradition that flowed into it, through the lens of methods widely accepted in mainstream New Testament scholarship. Readers will return to the book of Revelation itself with enhanced confidence, penetration, and understanding.

Book Pointy Shoes and Pith Helmets

Download or read book Pointy Shoes and Pith Helmets written by Marianne Hulsbosch and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on extensive research, Hulsbosch explores dress and adornment of the Ambonese people of the Central Maluku Islands, in Indonesia, during the last century of Dutch colonial rule. She demonstrates how visual identity formation is a lived experience and an active, constant innovation that is not only a response to society, but simultaneously drives and shapes society. This long overdue text documents sartorial expression of the colonizer (the Dutch) and the colonized (the Ambonese) and investigates previously ignored history of indigenous and Western women living in a colonial context. This book is a visual feast designed and written to appeal to scholars and the general public alike.
