Download or read book Intervals Scales Tones and the Concert Pitch C written by Maria Renold and published by Temple Lodge Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is it that certain intervals, scales, and tones sound genuine, while others sound false? Is the modern person able to experience a qualitative difference in a tone's pitch? If so, what are the implications for modern concert pitch and how instruments of fixed tuning are tuned? Renold tackles these and many other questions and provides a wealth of scientific data. Her pioneering work is the result of a lifetime of research into the Classical Greek origin of Western music and the search for modern developments. She deepens our musical understanding by using Rudolf Steiner's spiritual science as a basis, and she elucidates many of his puzzling statements about music. The results of her work include the following discoveries: The octave has two sizes (a 'genuine' sounding octave is bigger than the "perfect octave"). There are three sizes of "perfect fifths." An underlying "form principle" for all scales can be found. Equal temperament is not the most satisfactory method of tuning a piano. She provides a basis for some of Steiner's statements, such as, "C is always prime," and "C = 128 Hz = Sun." Here is a valuable resource for those who wish to understand the deeper, spiritual aspects of music.

Download or read book Looking for True written by Tricia Springstubb and published by Holiday House. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When two unlikely friends bond over shared compassion for a bereft but lovable dog, they learn what it truly means to find a sense of belonging and identity. Eleven-year-olds Gladys and Jude live in the same small rust belt town, and go to the same school, but they are definitely not friends. Gladys is a tiny, eccentric, walking dictionary who doesn’t hesitate to express herself, while Jude likes to keep his thoughts and feelings to himself. But they both agree that a new dog in the neighborhood is being mistreated by its owner. Gladys would like to do something to help, while Jude is more resigned to the situation— until the dog (who Gladys has named True Blue) disappears. They hatch a plan to find her, and once they do, realize they have a problem: Gladys’s father is allergic and Jude’s mother hates dogs. There is no way they can bring her home. They hide True Blue in an abandoned house on the edge of town, but as their ties to the dog—and to one another—deepen, so does the impossibility of keeping such a big secret. Yet giving True up will break all three of their hearts. Told in alternating voices set in a small, rust-belt town, Looking for True is a story about family, identity, and finding friends in unexpected places. A Horn Book Fanfare Title

Download or read book Pitch Determination of Speech Signals written by W. Hess and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pitch (i.e., fundamental frequency FO and fundamental period TO) occupies a key position in the acoustic speech signal. The prosodic information of an utterance is predominantly determined by this parameter. The ear is more sensitive to changes of fundamental frequency than to changes of other speech signal parameters by an order of magnitude. The quality of vocoded speech is essentially influenced by the quality and faultlessness of the pitch measure ment. Hence the importance of this parameter necessitates using good and reliable measurement methods. At first glance the task looks simple: one just has to detect the funda mental frequency or period of a quasi-periodic signal. For a number of reasons, however, the task of pitch determination has to be counted among the most difficult problems in speech analysis. 1) In principle, speech is a nonstationary process; the momentary position of the vocal tract may change abruptly at any time. This leads to drastic variations in the temporal structure of the signal, even between subsequent pitch periods, and assuming a quasi-periodic signal is often far from realistic. 2) Due to the flexibility of the human vocal tract and the wide variety of voices, there exist a multitude of possible temporal structures. Narrow-band formants at low harmonics (especially at the second or third harmonic) are an additional source of difficulty. 3) For an arbitrary speech signal uttered by an unknown speaker, the fundamental frequency can vary over a range of almost four octaves (50 to 800 Hz).

Download or read book A Rosetta Stone written by Michael Sandborn and published by Virtuoso Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-16 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental structure of the universe, from the particle and the atom to the biological evolution of organisms such as the eye and ear, exist because of the harmonic relationships of waves. The most significant characteristic of the human species to evolve was advanced communication abilities resulting from the perception of harmonics. This perception led directly to the unique biological morphology of the human vocal apparatus and the correlative neurocranial expansion of the auditory, memory, and language regions of the brain. New research is conclusively demonstrating that the modern human capacity for advanced language was in tact by approximately 200,000 B.C.E. and that the earliest advanced technologies to be created were harmonic sound and language devices. To date, there has never been a thorough examining or explanation of why the harmonic component emerged, nor has a model been discovered or developed to define and elucidate the harmonic structure of language which is the unifying mechanism of all fields. Within this treatise, a new harmonic model of Euclidean space is presented which elucidates the fundamental harmonic identities of numbers and their relationships within a naturally occurring resonant field system. This model is then applied to various harmonic phenomena in contrasting wave based fields to demonstrate unified harmonic structure and function. As a pièce de résistance, it is shown that the harmonic mechanisms which create the triangularity of vowel formant perception and the resultant Euclidean harmonic circularity of vowel space, is synonymous to the ocular cone trichromacy forming color perception and the resultant Euclidean harmonic circularity of color space. Due to the underlying harmonic frequency substrate of both these phenomena, an expanded harmonic correlation is demonstrated with wide ranging repercussions. One such consequence being the ability to linguistically transfer the categorical perception of harmonic structure from one field to another providing a plethora of new harmonic investigative and analytical tools for every wave based field. The core of the information presented herein is demonstrated through the medium of sound and the organizing harmonic elements of music language. Accordingly, the integral components of language formant vowels and consonants, color trichromacy, and dual harmonic frequency/wavelength systems are unified in an applied model which has been tested for the past decade showing fundamental harmonic cohesion and discourse between the underlying phenomena. Though this treatise is a scholarly presentation, it is designed to be accessible to a wide and diverse educated audience due to the sheer scope of facts presented from multiple niche disciplines to which no single scholar could be expected to possess an expert command. It is thus a comprehensive panorama of harmonic structure providing a never-before-seen perspective harmonic correlation between seemingly unrelated fields. As much as this treatise is an extensive exposition of the structure of harmonics, it is also an engaging expose of harmonic evolution within the biology of multiple species and the systems of color, language, and music. It has therefore been defined as a Rosetta Stone which not only provides for the decoding of fundamental evolutionary harmonic correlations between wide ranging organisms, but also provides new tools to investigate, analyze, and evolve the next frontier of harmonic order.
