But we are now so numerous and our technology is so p- erful that we are having major effects on the planet, its environment, and the b- sphere. For some years prophets have warned of the possible detrimental consequences of our activities, such as pollution, deforestation, and overfishing, and recently it has become clear that we are even changing the atmosphere (e. g. ozone, carbon dioxide). This is worrying since the planet’s life systems are involved and dependent on its functioning. Current climate change – global w arming – is one recognised consequence of this larger problem. To face this major challenge, we will need the research and advice of many disciplines – Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Biology, and Sociology – and particularly the commitment of wise politicians such as US Senator Al Gore. An important aspect of this global problem that has been researched for several decades is the loss of species and the impoverishment of our ecosystems, and hence their ability to sustain themselves, and more particularly us! Through evolutionary time new species have been generated and some have gone extinct. Such extinction and regeneration are moulded by changes in the earth’s crust, atmosphere, and resultant climate. Some extinctions have been massive, particularly those asso- ated with catastrophic meteoric impacts like the end of the Cretaceous Period 65Mya.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Piscataquis Biography and Fragments "Twice-Told Tales" would be an appropriate title to much that herein appears, some of it having previously been published in the publications of the Maine Historical Society, in the Maine Sportsman and other journals, and some are memorial proceedings in our courts as they have appeared from time to time in the Piscataquis Observer and other local papers. It is a partial history of some who have been distinguished in public life in the Pine Tree State, and who have abided in Piscataquis County and helped to make its history during a generation that is rapidly passing from earthly view. They were men of strong personalities and have made an indelible impress upon the community. With the exception of what is said of Hiram Stevens Maxim, the subjects of these sketches have all departed the scenes of this life and entered upon that "Sleep that no pain shall wake." Thomas de Heydon (ca. 1185-ca. 1250) of Heydon was a justice in Norfolk County. His son, William Heydon (ca. 1220-1272) succeeded him in the estate and was the father of John De Haydon, the judge, and ancestor of the Devon line. The author assumes that John, William, and James Heydon, three brothers, the immigrated ancestors of the American lines, who appeared in Boston, Dorchester, and Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1630, were sons of Gidoen Haydon, of Cadhay, of the Devon line. Some of their descendants spell their name "Hayden."

We have designed this book to meet a need of modem geology: namely, a single source providing both detailed and synoptic stratigraphy of the various regions of North America, through geological time. Shortly after beginning work on such a book, we realized why it had not yet been written: it required six years of effort, assimilation of an incredible amount of information, and two years' additional work to cut the volume down to publishable size.
