Book Drinking Water Distribution Systems

Download or read book Drinking Water Distribution Systems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-01-22 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protecting and maintaining water distributions systems is crucial to ensuring high quality drinking water. Distribution systems-consisting of pipes, pumps, valves, storage tanks, reservoirs, meters, fittings, and other hydraulic appurtenances-carry drinking water from a centralized treatment plant or well supplies to consumers' taps. Spanning almost 1 million miles in the United States, distribution systems represent the vast majority of physical infrastructure for water supplies, and thus constitute the primary management challenge from both an operational and public health standpoint. Recent data on waterborne disease outbreaks suggest that distribution systems remain a source of contamination that has yet to be fully addressed. This report evaluates approaches for risk characterization and recent data, and it identifies a variety of strategies that could be considered to reduce the risks posed by water-quality deteriorating events in distribution systems. Particular attention is given to backflow events via cross connections, the potential for contamination of the distribution system during construction and repair activities, maintenance of storage facilities, and the role of premise plumbing in public health risk. The report also identifies advances in detection, monitoring and modeling, analytical methods, and research and development opportunities that will enable the water supply industry to further reduce risks associated with drinking water distribution systems.

Book Pipe Material Selection in Drinking Water Systems

Download or read book Pipe Material Selection in Drinking Water Systems written by T. Hedberg and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New environmental water quality directives and increasing demands on pipe performance have focused attention on design criteria and selection of pipe materials for drinking water distribution systems. Water quality changes during distribution and the different pipe materials (and their degree of corrosion) are linked. Other factors in the selection of materials such as physical strength, pipe construction, laying technology, joint methodology and the external environment of the pipe must also be considered. These proceedings comprise 14 papers selected from the 3rd international seminar that aimed to bring a holistic perspective to the issue: amongst the topics covered are internal corrosion, microbiological activity, water treatment and corrosion control, pipe material selection case studies, and external corrosion and structural design. The seminar provided a very successful forum for water supply professionals, corrosion scientists, pipe designers and manufacturers and engineers. The state of the art contributions selected for these proceedings set out current experience and strategies for pipe material selection from a holistic viewpoint.

Book Geoenvironmental Engineering

Download or read book Geoenvironmental Engineering written by Raymond Nen Yong and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 2004-06-30 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new book contains the proceedings of the 4th Geoenvironmental Engineering Conference, organised by the British Geotechnical Association and Cardiff University’s School of Engineering, held in Stratford-Upon-Avon in June 2004. The theme of the conference was Integrated Management of Groundwater and Contaminated Land. This book is a compilation of peer-reviewed papers; grouped according to the sessions under which they were presented at the conference. Issues associated with Geoenvironmental Engineering continue to be a major preoccupation for Governments, public and private organisations and the general community around the world. The conference brought together people working in industry, academia and the public sector to discuss the latest ideas and developments in Geoenvironmental Engineering and related fields. The papers in these proceedings reflect the work being undertaken across the discipline. This volume is an indispensable source of information on current research and practice in the field of integrated management of groundwater and contaminated land.

Book Integrated Drainage Systems Planning and Design for Municipal Engineers

Download or read book Integrated Drainage Systems Planning and Design for Municipal Engineers written by Patrick Ssempeera and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban water management has to take an integrated approach that prioritizes sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) over gray infrastructure. This book elaborates on the planning and evaluation of pipework drainage systems with a focus on modern-day constraints to deliver a solution that favors sustainability as the overarching goal. The book includes a technical section on design of gray and green infrastructure, considering the total lifecycle costs of drainage systems. Advanced computer simulation techniques are discussed after covering the derivation of both standard and empirical equations for appropriate hydrology and hydraulics. The book provides an incorporation of reliability analyses for both green and gray infrastructure starting with techniques for forecasting flows, hydraulic performance, and lifecycle costs. The work also involves 3-D modeling, geospatial and big data analysis, and how these techniques are applied into city management—particularly beneficial to municipal engineers who are increasingly becoming involved in mapping the underground. Soil mechanics and subsurface drainage systems are analyzed and structural aspects of sewers are included. Finally, soil behavior in shear, retaining wall structures, and tunneling is briefly featured in the book. This book will be of interest to (under)graduate and postgraduate engineering students, drainage engineers, urban planners, architects, water engineers, developers, construction contractors, and municipal engineers.
