Book Pioneers of Progress Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pioneers of Progress Classic Reprint written by T. A. Bland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Progress Biography is the life of history. Without it the chronicles of a nation would be of small value. It teaches both by precept and example. If the example is good the lesson is uplifting. The lives of good men and women are practical object lessons; and the history of such lives is a rich inheritance to the world. It constitutes the chief part of a nations wealth. The nineteenth century was a record-breaking period, in the way of producing great men and women. Men and women who have distinguished themselves by their wise words and noble deeds. It was the author's good fortune to be born in the early part of that century, and to live his manhood life during the last half of it, and to enjoy the personal acquaintance of some of those great souls who have been prominent actors in the drama of progress. In this book the author gives his impressions of those headlights of humanity, in the form of brief biographical sketches and personal reminiscences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book Pioneers of Progress

Download or read book Pioneers of Progress written by W. W. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Progress: Men of Science; Galileo In the year 1343 one Tommaso Bonajuti, being elected to the Council of Twelve in Florence, changed his family name to Galilei. His grandson, Galileo Galilei, a century later, was a celebrated physician, professor of medicine at the University of Florence, and became chief magistrate of the Republic. This Galileo's brother had a great-grandson Vincenzio, the father of the great Galileo, whose life forms the subject of this volume. We shall consistently drop the surname in our references to him, following a custom of the Italians in speaking of their great men; such as Dante, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Vincenzio Galilei was a skilful and accomplished musician, with a good knowledge of classics and mathematics, but want of means and the expense of a growing family had sent him into commercial life, and induced him to choose for his eldest son's future career the business of a cloth-dealer, as something of fairly good standing and also lucrative. This son Galileo was born in Pisa on February 15, 1564, the year that saw the birth of Shakespeare, and his education began in a day-school there with some assistance from his father at times when business did not take him away from Pisa. Book Heroes of Progress in America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heroes of Progress in America Classic Reprint written by Charles Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Progress in America IN the history of every nation there is much more going on than wars and revolutions. These are brief in duration and rapid in effect, but in the long inter vals between the years of strife the work of peace goes steadily forward, producing its changes more deliberately but with equal utility. The pioneer and the warrior are not the only figures that stand promi nent in national archives, not the only individuals that rise to the surface of things. There are many persons who attain heroic proportions not as results of bold adventure or military skill and daring, but through aid to the progress of mankind in less showy but equally important ways. The careers of these workers for good usually present little of the striking or dramatic. Their histories are not of the coruscating order and their lineaments and proportions not those usually given to the heroic figure. Yet they are often heroes in the noblest sense, and do more for the advancement of mankind than he who draws the sword in his country's defence or plunges into the untrodden wilderness in efforts to extend the borders of his nation's dominion. Book The Plea and the Pioneers in Virginia

Download or read book The Plea and the Pioneers in Virginia written by Frederick Arthur Hodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plea and the Pioneers in Virginia: A History of the Rise and Early Progress of the Disciples of Christ in Virginia, With Biographical Sketches of the Pioneer Preachers Our object in presenting this little volume to the public is threefold. First: The reformation in Penn sylvania and that part of Old Virginia now known as West Virginia has been set forth in Richardson's Memoirs of A. Campbell; Haley's Dawn of the Reformation performs a similar work for Missouri; the reformation in Ohio has been depicted in Hayden's Early History of Disciples in Western Reserve; the pioneer history of the movement in Kentucky is derived from the biographies of John Smith and Jacob Creath; Virginia alone, of all the States that took a prominent part in the restoration of primitive Chris tianity, has up to this time had no written record of her pioneer reformers. Our second reason is: That the younger generation about to become the pillars in the churches of Christ know little if anything of the lives of those grand old men, their forefathers, who fought so nobly the good fight of faith; nor can they justly appreciate the necessity of standing firm on the bedrock principles of the Old Jerusalem Gospel. Third: Doctrinal points are more easily understood when their application is in the concrete than when it is abstract. Our history as a people is the story of our plea in the concrete. During the year 1901 the author embodied some of the material found in this work in a series of essays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Some First Steps in Human Progress Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some First Steps in Human Progress Classic Reprint written by Frederick Starr and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some First Steps in Human Progress The word "anthropology" from its derivation means, of course, a discourse concerning man. It has been defined by the great French naturalist, De Quatrefages, as "the natural history of man." It is, then, scientific study of man of the same sort as the scientific study which a botanist pursues concerning plants and the zoologist concerning animals. In its most comprehensive meaning it includes the study of the physical man and of his mental, social, and religious natures. It is a broad field; not easily limited. It includes a number of subordinate sciences, such as somatology or physical anthropology, ethnology, prehistoric archaeology, and culture history. It is not the intention of the author in writing this book to discuss the whole field of anthropology, but simply to consider some points in culture history. It shall be our aim to trace simply some few of the first steps in human progress. Primitive man, whatever his capacity for learning and achievement, faced an unknown world. He was to subdue nature; to do so he must solve many problems. If we look at the great progress and advancement which we, in America, have made within one hundred years we may see how the solution of one problem aids to solve a new problem; how the ground gained to-day serves simply as a point from which to advance to occupy new ground to-morrow. This progress is now marked and rapid; when it began it was slow and feeble. A part of this book was originally presented in the form of lectures to a Chautauqua audience. It is only where there is no freedom, that anarchy is to be dreaded. The mere sense of freedom is of too pure and holy a nature to consist with injustice and wrong. Book Literary Pioneers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literary Pioneers: Early American Explorers of European Culture One of the 'most important contributions to American intel lectual life in the nineteenth century resulted from the romantic impulse which impelled a group of aspiring young scholars to pursue their studies in foreign countries. George Ticknor and Edward Everett, as students at the University of Gottingen, were the earliest of the pioneers in this movement. In the course of years they were followed by Joseph Green Cogswell, George Bancroft, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Motley, and others of distinction. Their return to pursuits in various fields of knowledge in this country lent a powerful impetus to the progress of learning and to the enrichment of our cultural de velopment. The purpose of this volume is to record the many interesting relationships which these internationally minded men experienced in Europe, especially in Germany, and to show the part which they played afterwards in the advancement of American life. The revelation is found principally in their journals and correspondence, which furnish many parallels of impressions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Ohio: The Rise and Progress of an American State This marvelous development was not due to the mere accretion of growth resulting from time, but it was the direct work of the men who met and solved the prob lems of the period in which they lived. No better blood was ever given to found a State than that of the pioneers of Ohio; strong and healthy strains of other lands have since entered into its life. Such a people cannot fail to have an interesting career, and in these pages is recorded their history. If, as Bacon says, history makes men wise, it is be cause he who writes it deducts lessons from the past. So, remembering that history is philosophy teaching by example, I have not been content wholly with making this volume a mere chronological table or a skeleton of facts, but have at times undertaken by deduction, criticism or otherwise, to give the reader a text for the thoughtful consideration of the lessons that can be derived from the past.
