Excerpt: ... cators and by representatives of a variety of systems. At the beginning of the second session Baron Posse set forth "The Chief Characteristics of the Swedish System of Gymnastics" in a masterly paper, followed by a demonstration of that system by a class of women under his leadership. One result of this wisely planned and persevering agitation of the subject was the action of the Boston School Committee taken June 24, 1890, in line with the report and recommendations of its committee on physical training presented two weeks before, which ordered "that the Ling or Swedish system of educational gymnastics be introduced into all the public schools of this city." In November of that year Dr. Edward Mussey Hartwell of Baltimore was elected Director of Physical Training, to hold office from January 1, 1891. Meanwhile Baron Posse had been succeeded at the Boston Normal School of Gymnastics by Claes J. Enebuske in the middle of January, 1890; but on the first of the following month he opened a gymnasium and training school of his own in the Harcourt building, on Irvington Street. The six years of life that remained were crowded with incessant teaching and writing. During this period, it is said, "gymnastics according to his methods were officially introduced into the public schools of fifty-two cities and towns, and into as many more private institutions and academies. Clinics for medical gymnastic treatment were established by him in most of the larger Boston hospitals, and instruction was given to the nurses of many hospitals in adjacent towns." Summer courses for teachers and others were conducted at the Martha's Vineyard Summer Institute (1890, 1891, 1892), in his Boston gymnasium (1892, 1894, 1895), and at Harvey, Illinois (1893), while he...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Modern Physical Training Denmark was the first European state to introduce physi cal training into its schools as an essential part of the course and to prepare teachers of that subject by offering sys tematic instruction in theory and method of gymnastics. The leader in this movement, and its director for forty years, was franz nachtegall (177 7 - 1847 whose whole life was passed in Copenhagen. As a student in the uni versity there he had applied himself to fencing and vaulting, and after his father's death undertook to support himself by giving instruction in gymnastics, at first in a private school. In 1799 he organized a gymnastic club composed of stu dents and young merchants, and on November 5 of the same year opened a. Private gymnasium, the first institution in modern times devoted exclusively to physical training. The venture was successful from the start. When five years later the government established a Military Institute for training non-commissioned officers to teach gymnastics in the army, its management was entrusted to Nachtegall, who received the title Professor of Gymnastics. The King also started, in 1808, a Civil Gymnastic Institute, in order to pre pare teachers for the elementary schools. A law passed in 1814 decreed that every school in Denmark Should provide grounds and apparatus for gymnastics, and that wherever the teachers were able to direct it the children should be given an hour of exercise each day, in addition to the regu lar schedule. Nachtegall was appointed Director of Gym nasties in 1821, his duties extending to the schools of the army and navy as well as to civil institutions. He pub lished, In 1828, a Manual of Gymnastics for Elementary Schools, the first book of its kind, and three years later' a Manual of Gymnastics for Use in Secondary Schools. Both were afterwards translated into German. Nachtegall resigned his position as Director of Gymnastics in 1842. Consult the American Physical Education Review for June, 1904 (vol. Book excerpt: A New Yorker Best Book of the year An Esquire Best Nonfiction Book of 2022 From Insomniac City author Bill Hayes, "who can tackle just about any subject in book form, and make you glad he did" (SF Chronicle)-a cultural, scientific, literary, and personal history of exercise. Exercise is our modern obsession, and we have the fancy workout gear and fads from HIIT to spin classes to hot yoga to prove it. Exercise-a form of physical activity distinct from sports, play, or athletics-was an ancient obsession, too, but as a chapter in human history, it's been largely overlooked. In Sweat, Bill Hayes runs, jogs, swims, spins, walks, bikes, boxes, lifts, sweats, and downward-dogs his way through the origins of different forms of exercise, chronicling how they have evolved over time, dissecting the dynamics of human movement. Hippocrates, Plato, Galen, Susan B. Anthony, Jack LaLanne, and Jane Fonda, among many others, make appearances in Sweat, but chief among the historical figures is Girolamo Mercuriale, a Renaissance-era Italian physician who aimed singlehandedly to revive the ancient Greek “art of exercising” through his 1569 book De arte gymnastica. Though largely forgotten over the past five centuries, Mercuriale and his illustrated treatise were pioneering, and are brought back to life in the pages of Sweat. Hayes ties his own personal experience-and ours-to the cultural and scientific history of exercise, from ancient times to the present day, giving us a new way to understand its place in our lives in the 21st century.

Book The Joy of Movement

Download or read book The Joy of Movement written by Kelly McGonigal and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback. The bestselling author of The Willpower Instinct introduces a surprising science-based book that doesn't tell us why we should exercise but instead shows us how to fall in love with movement. Exercise is health-enhancing and life-extending, yet many of us feel it's a chore. But, as Kelly McGonigal reveals, it doesn't have to be. Movement can and should be a source of joy. Through her trademark blend of science and storytelling, McGonigal draws on insights from neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and evolutionary biology, as well as memoirs, ethnographies, and philosophers. She shows how movement is intertwined with some of the most basic human joys, including self-expression, social connection, and mastery--and why it is a powerful antidote to the modern epidemics of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. McGonigal tells the stories of people who have found fulfillment and belonging through running, walking, dancing, swimming, weightlifting, and more, with examples that span the globe, from Tanzania, where one of the last hunter-gatherer tribes on the planet live, to a dance class at Juilliard for people with Parkinson's disease, to the streets of London, where volunteers combine fitness and community service, to races in the remote wilderness, where athletes push the limits of what a human can endure. Along the way, McGonigal paints a portrait of human nature that highlights our capacity for hope, cooperation, and self-transcendence. The result is a revolutionary narrative that goes beyond familiar arguments in favor of exercise, to illustrate why movement is integral to both our happiness and our humanity. Readers will learn what they can do in their own lives and communities to harness the power of movement to create happiness, meaning, and connection.

Book Let s Get Physical

Download or read book Let s Get Physical written by Danielle Friedman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-01-03 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating blend of reportage and personal narrative that explores the untold history of women’s exercise culture--from jogging and Jazzercise to Jane Fonda--and how women have parlayed physical strength into other forms of power. For much of the twentieth century, sweating was considered “unladylike” and girls grew up believing physical exertion would cause their uterus to “fall out.” It was only in the Sixties that, thanks to a few forward-thinking fitness pioneers, women began to move en masse. In Let's Get Physical, journalist Danielle Friedman reveals the fascinating untold history of contemporary fitness culture, chronicling in vivid, cinematic prose how exercise evolved from a beauty tool pitched almost exclusively as a way to “reduce” into one millions have harnessed as a path to mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Let’s Get Physical takes us into the workout studios and onto the mats to reclaim these forgotten origin stories—and shine a spotlight on the trailblazers who made it possible for women to move. Each chapter uncovers the birth of an fitness movement that laid the foundation for working out today: the invention of the barre method in the Swinging Sixties, jogging’s path to liberation in the Seventies, the explosion of aerobics and weight-training in the Eighties, the rise of yoga in the Nineties, and the ongoing push for a more socially inclusive fitness culture—one that celebrates every body. Ultimately, it tells the story of how women discovered the joy of physical competence and strength—and how, by moving together to transform fitness from a privilege into a right, we can create a more powerful sisterhood.
