Book The Faith of our Pioneer Fathers

Download or read book The Faith of our Pioneer Fathers written by Bryant S. Hinckley and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minstrels, troubadours—the story tellers of old—stirred the hearts of men and moved them to action as they retold the sagas of valor and devotion of ancient heroes. Gathered here are stirring stories, sagas of faith and devotion, associated with the careers of twenty-two heroic figures of our day. From careers like these we gain encouragement and strength which drive away fear and doubt. Frustrations and defeats become the challenges which beckon us to try again in the spirit which is sustained and made ready to enjoy ultimate victory. From these we learn fortitude in the face of adversity and gratitude to Divine Providence for the generous rewards of faithfulness. Though several of the stories included in “Faith of Our Pioneer Fathers” are familiar in other settings, some are available for the first time.

Download or read book Pioneers in the Attic written by Sara M. Patterson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do thousands of Mormons devote their summer vacations to following the Mormon Trail? Why does the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Day Saints spend millions of dollars to build monuments and Visitor Centers that believers can visit to experience the history of their nineteenth-century predecessors who fled westward in search of their promised land? Why do so many Mormon teenagers dress up in Little-House-on-the-Prairie-style garb and push handcarts over the highest local hills they can find? And what exactly is a "traveling Zion"? In Pioneers in the Attic, Sara Patterson analyzes how and why Mormons are engaging their nineteenth-century past in the modern era, arguing that as the LDS community globalized in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, its relationship to space was transformed. Following their exodus to Utah, nineteenth-century Mormons believed that they must gather together in Salt Lake Zion - their new center place. They believed that Zion was a place you could point to on a map, a place you should dwell in to live a righteous life. Later Mormons had to reinterpret these central theological principles as their community spread around the globe, but to say that they simply spiritualized concepts that had once been understood literally is only one piece of the puzzle. Contemporary Mormons still want to touch and to feel these principles, so they mark and claim the landscapes of the American West with versions of their history carved in stone. They develop rituals that allow them not only to learn the history of the nineteenth-century journey west, but to engage it with all of their senses. Pioneers in the Attic reveals how modern-day Mormons have created a sense of community and felt religion through the memorialization of early Mormon pioneers of the American West, immortalizing a narrative of shared identity through an emphasis on place and collective memory.

Book Higher Education Leadership and Governance in the Development of the Creative and Cultural Industries in Kenya

Download or read book Higher Education Leadership and Governance in the Development of the Creative and Cultural Industries in Kenya written by Emily Akuno and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of higher education in establishing structures and procedures in society and industry is clearly articulated in scholarly discussions. The narrative has recently taken a new momentum in Kenya with acknowledgement of the creative industry involves many youth, as an area that impacts on the economy. In unravelling the link between higher education and industry, the authors focus on leadership and governance in higher education and its expected and perceived contribution to the shaping of the creative industry. Through analysis of cases, the authors interrogate the processes and structures that govern the teaching and practice of the creative subjects, noting how these affect the creative industry in Kenya. This document approaches the creative disciplines from the perspectives of the students, lecturers and university administrators. The three voices provide a balanced view of what higher creative arts education in Kenya is. The multiple authorship of the book further provides a balanced account of the development of these disciplines in higher education, and their growth in industry. The key concepts here are the development of the creative industry and how higher education should contribute to the same.

Book Adventures of a Church Historian

Download or read book Adventures of a Church Historian written by Leonard J. Arrington and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adventures of a Church Historian details how Leonard J. Arrington opened up archival resources and presided, for a time, over an unprecedented era of enlightenment as he and those working under his aegis produced path-breaking works of Mormon scholarship. Arrington was the first professional historian and the first noncentral authority to serve as church historian of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a position he held from 1972 to 1982. Arrington's church appointment came at a crucial point in LDS history, when the institution was being transformed from a regional church whose ecclesiastical hierarchy directly presided over its congregants into a modern, worldwide church with an elaborate bureaucracy. His description of conducting research in the LDS Church Archives in the days of Elder Joseph Fielding Smith and Brother A. Will Lund provides a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the LDS First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Riveting chapters on the actions of the controversial Historical Department reveal details of Arrington's release and replacement as the old system gave way to the new.

Book The U S Naval Institute on Leadership Ethics

Download or read book The U S Naval Institute on Leadership Ethics written by Timothy J Demy and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 188 pages. Moving beyond the “right and wrong” of personal ethics to examine the broader field of professional military ethics, this carefully selected collection of relevant materials from the Naval Institute's vast collection of articles recognizes the range of experience, perspectives, and opinions that are found in the sea services and argues that diversity does not preclude acceptance of common core values and standards of performance within any unit. Included are articles by Adm. Arleigh Burke and Vice Adm. James B. Stockdale that speak from long personal experience regarding the topics of integrity and moral courage.
