Book excerpt: Book Five: White Indians continued Connal Lee Swinton's adventures with his Shoshone family in Great Salt Lake City in the summer of 1859. It picked up where Book Four: An Uneasy Peace, ended. Connal Lee and his family decided to spend their summer building an adobe home on the acreage given them by a grateful church and territory. They thought they were living in a peaceful, post war territory. Short Rainbow, their shaman and first wife, had a premonition. She warned her family to always carry loaded firearms, even on their family land. Their family friend, Major Robert Harris married his housekeeper, Ingrid and adopted her two sons. At their wedding reception, Connal Lee learned of silver and gold discovered in the mountains on the western edge of the Territory of Utah. These mines would soon be called the Comstock Load. They planted an orchard and small garden patch on their farmstead. The entire basin experienced another serious draught that year. The draught brought swarms of locusts into the valley. The ugly brown grasshoppers devoured everything green they could reach. Late one night a rowdy pack of fifteen drunken carousers left the bawdy houses on Whiskey Street heading back to Fort Floyd and nearby Dobie Town. They wanted more to drink so they stopped at the Globe Saloon, just down the path from Connal Lee's homestead. Since it was closed, they shot it up, then began firing at Connal Lee's tent camp glowing uphill in the full moon. Connal Lee and his family grabbed their guns and halted the drunken attack. They had the drunks arrested. With the growing influx of prospectors, adventurers, pioneers, and settlers, the Indians were forced off their traditional hunting grounds. They began attacking wagon trains and settlements in retribution. Criminals escaping the California justice system joined packs of angry renegade Indians to prey on helpless wagon trains. Adventurers from Dobie Town and deserters from Fort Floyd swelled their ranks to dangerous proportions. Because they dressed like Indians to disguise their criminal activities, the packs became known as White Indians. Returning to the city from Fort Floyd, Connal Lee and Major Harris interrupted a White Indian attack on a small wagon train on State Road. One of the survivors was a six year old orphan boy, Kyle. Kyle latched on to Connal Lee and wouldn't let go.

It picked up where Book Five: White Indians ended. Connal Lee and his family worked at building an adobe home on their new homestead. The Comstock Lode began mining silver 500 miles west of the city at the edge of the Territory of Utah. Gold was discovered 600 miles southeast of the city at Pike's Peak. Prospectors, adventurers and settlers swarmed into the area from both coasts creating increased friction with displaced Indians. Indians began looting wagon trains and settlements in retribution. Dislocated tribes fought each other over limited hunting grounds. Criminals escaping California law joined up with packs of renegade Indian warriors. Deserters from Fort Floyd and adventurers from nearby Dobie Town swelled their ranks. They dressed like Indians and raided vulnerable wagon trains far and near, making the territory increasingly unsafe. They become known as White Indians. The army sent soldiers to subdue them all. Connal Lee and his Shoshone spouses made friends and enemies all around while they worked at building their farmstead. The territory became increasingly lawless as the hot summer progressed. Between the draught and swarms of locusts denuding the land of everything green, they faced a number of challenges. Connal Lee's Big Brother, Captain John Reed, received a promotion to Major and was reassigned to Intelligence at army headquarters in West Point. He visited to say goodbye. The army sent a company of dragoons to arrest Chief Pocatello up in Box Elder. Newspapers covered the growing anti-slavery sentiment spurred on by Abraham Lincoln's lectures across the country. Lincoln built quite a following from all four political parties. The war of words between abolitionists and slavers turned violent, particularly in Bleeding Kansas. It was a summer of great change and unrest throughout all of America. Connal Lee and his family struggled to survive and raise their children despite increasing threats from both nature and man. Perilous times, indeed.

They finished construction of their new adobe home. Connal Lee adopted six-year-old Kyle. Connal Lee's best friend, Major John Reed, departed for the States. Connal Lee's family decided to take Jedediah and Jeff Morgan home to Fort Box Elder then continue on to visit Connal Lee's family by Fort Hall. Jeff took his newly engaged fiancé with them. Renegade Indians, including Chief Pocatello's clan and packs of murderous White Indians, plagued the northern territory and the Overland Trails. Hundreds of wagons a day headed west, adding to the chaos. On Connal Lee's trip north, local guards from Fort Ogden mistook Connal Lee and his Shoshone family for White Indians and shot Jedediah by mistake. After attending Jedediah's funeral, they continued north. They visited Zeff Swinton and his new baby girl, then moved on to see Mother and Father Baines up on the Blackfoot River. While returning to Fort Box Elder, a pack of White Indians fleeing army soldiers overran them. They fired on Connal Lee's family. The Shoshone family defended themselves. After the skirmish, soldiers from Fort Floyd detained Connal Lee and his family at the scene of the battle. The army questioned then released them with thanks for helping subdue the White Indians. Connal Lee's family arrived in Brigham City just in time to attend Jeff's wedding. A week later they pulled in to their new homestead in Great Salt Lake City. David Gilmore Junior and his sister, hired to stay on the homestead and water the garden, reported several vicious pranks and criminal threats during their absence. Shortly after their return, they discovered their new orchard trampled into the ground. Connal Lee led a search for the vandal. They followed their unknown enemy south to Mount Olympus before losing his trail. A few days later their mysterious foe kidnapped Bright Star in broad daylight. Despite hiding his tracks and setting false trails, Connal Lee trailed him to where he left Bright Star tied up on the ground, beaten, unconscious, but alive. Furious, Connal Lee and Screaming Eagle pursued the kidnapper's tracks. When the trail ended abruptly, the kidnapper opened fire and wounded Screaming Eagle. He then disappeared. On the ride home Screaming Eagle fainted from loss of blood. While Connal Lee attended him, a hulking brute of an ex-soldier, one of the men arrested and punished for shooting up Connal Lee's homestead some months prior, attacked him from behind. They fought fiercely.

Brown addresses these questions within the interrelated contexts of anthropology, U.S. Indian policy, and popular fiction by white and mixed-blood writers, mapping the evolution of "hybridity" from a biological to a cultural category. Brown traces the processes that once mandated the mixed-blood's exile as a grotesque or criminal outcast and that have recently brought about his ascendance as a cultural hero in contemporary Native American writing. Because the myth of the demise of the Indian and the ascendance of the Anglo-Saxon is traditionally tied to America's national idea, nationalist literature depicts Indian-white hybrids in images of degeneracy, atavism, madness, and even criminality. A competing tradition of popular writing, however, often created by mixed-blood writers themselves, contests these images of the outcast half-breed by envisioning "hybrid vigor," both biologically and linguistically, as a model for a culturally heterogeneous nation.
