Book Death Valley in 49

Download or read book Death Valley in 49 written by William Lewis Manly and published by . This book was released on 1894 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Lewis Manly (1820-1903) and his family left Vermont in 1828, and he grew to manhood in Michigan and Wisconsin. On hearing the news of gold in California, Manly set off on horseback, joining an emigrant party in Missouri. Death Valley in '49 (1894) contains Manly's account of that overland journey. Setting out too late in the year to risk a northern passage thorugh the Sierras, the group takes the southern route to California, unluckily choosing an untried short cut through the mountains. This fateful decision brings the party through Death Valley, and Manly describes their trek through the desert, as well as the experiences of the Illinois "Jayhawkers" and others who took the Death Valley route. Manly's memoirs continue with his trip north to prospecting near the Mariposa mines, a brief trip back east via the Isthmus, and his return to California and another try at prospecting on the North Fork of the Yuba at Downieville in 1851. He provides lively ancedotes of life in mining camps and of his visits to Stockton, Sacramento, and San Francisco.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land of Gold: A Tale of 49, Illustrative of Early Pioneer Life in California, and Founded Upon Fact, Dedicated to California Pioneers This narrative, presented with many misgivings as to its acceptance by the general reader, and writ ten during an illness of some months' duration, is contributed to the file of literature for the purpose of keeping green the memory of the achievements of the early pioneers in California, and to show future generations what it cost to add what was once a wild and unbroken solitude to civilization and fame. In reviving scenes long since forgotten and re produc'ing characters buried in eternal sleep, I am actuated bya desire to commemorate their deeds and to leave to their posterity a memorial, humble as it is, in respectful remembrance, to the bravery and persistent endurance which marked their tracks through the Wildest regions of the Sierra Nevadas. Book A Picture of Pioneer Times in California

Download or read book A Picture of Pioneer Times in California written by William Francis White and published by . This book was released on 1881 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Francis White (1829-1891?) and his young wife sailed from New York in 1849 round the Horn to San Francisco, where he set up an import business. He later represented Santa Cruz in the state constitutional convention and served as a bank commissioner. A picture of pioneer times in California (1881), written under the pseudonym "William Grey," presents White's revisionist version of California history challenging the picture presented in the 1854 Annals of San Francisco. In particular, he attacks the Annals' discussion of the Mission Fathers and the Mission Indians, the United States conquest of California in the Mexican War, discovery of gold at Sutter's Fort, and the role of women during the Gold Rush. He also reminisces about his voyage to California and experiences as a San Francisco merchant, 1849-1850, as well as legends of the gold mines. The volume concludes with three fictional tales of California in the Gold Rush.

Download or read book Women Trailblazers of California written by Gloria G Harris and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a series of biographical profiles, this volume celebrates the lives and achievements of women who made history in the Golden State. Throughout California’s history, remarkable women have been at the core of change and innovation. In this fascinating volume, Gloria Harris and Hannah Cohen relate the stories of forty women whose struggles and achievements have paved the way for generations. Coming from all walks of life and entering a variety of fields—from activism and conservation to science, medicine, entertainment, and more—these women overcame prejudice, skepticism and injustice to prove that women can do anything. Visionary architect Julia Morgan designed Hearst Castle; Dolores Huerta co-founded United Farm Workers; Donaldina Cameron, the angry angel of Chinatown, rescued brothel workers; and silent film actress Mary Pickford helped form United Artists Pictures. From fearless pioneers to determined reformers, Harris and Cohen chronicle the triumphs and disappointments of diverse women who dared to take risks and break down barriers.
