Book Pioneer Days Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pioneer Days Classic Reprint written by Mary H. Carmichael and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Days The stories of early frontier life here pre sented, which are taken from the early his tories of the West and from lives of the frontiersmen and pioneers written by con temporaries and eye-witnesses, introduce the reader to an intimate acquaintance with the Indian races of the country which lies east of the Rocky Mountains. The savage warrior and hunter is presented, stripped of all the decorations with which writers of fiction have dressed him. He is seen in his ferocity and gentleness, in his rascality and nobility, in his boyhood, manhood and old age, and in his wis dom and ignognce. The accuracy and truth of these descriptions of the life and adventures of the period cannot be questioned, and they give us a vivid and inspiring picture of the con ditions under which part of our country was opened up for civilization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Oregon, Vol. 1: 1834-1848 The more remote in Oregon affairs has been given in my History of the Northwest Coast, which is indeed a part of the History of Oregon, as elsewhere ex plained. The later volumes deal with events which occurred within the memory of men now living; they are wrought out from yet more original sources, a large proportion of the facts herein presented never having before appeared in print. Obviously it is more difficult to treat fully and fairly a comparatively modern epoch, from absolutely crude material, than an earlier one which has been worked over by scholars for centuries. Of the hundreds of personal narratives which have been placed before me by those who as sisted in making the history, no two wholly agree; and yet to the careful student, with all the evidence before him, the truth is generally clear. The leading features of this history are not found in bloody conquests inspired by the thirst for gain and glory united to the hope of winning heaven, but in the more gentle purpose of adding to the enjoyments of earth by commerce and agriculture, the fur com pany, the missionaries of different sects soon converted into rival traders, and the middle class from the United States, all contributing of their several characteristics to form a society at once individual and independent. Book Pioneer Tales of the Oregon Trail and of Jefferson County Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pioneer Tales of the Oregon Trail and of Jefferson County Classic Reprint written by Charles Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Tales of the Oregon Trail and of Jefferson County The author has lived in Jefferson County nearly forty years, and has enjoyed the friendship of nearly all of the old settlers. He has been identified with them in many associations and gatherings having for their object the preservation of the history of the past. He served as Secretary of the Old Settlers Association for many years. This has enabled him to collect much pioneer history. The old settlers are rapidly diminishing in numbers. They alone can best tell the unwritten incidents of early days, much of which is already entangled with legend and tradition. Many incidents have become greatly distorted, oftentimes unrecognizable with the facts. He began to gather all data and reduce them to readable form, largely from the facts as above mentioned, and also for the reason that little had been made by others. The work was started by the author in 1909, and since that time great interest has been taken in it by the people who have aided in the work of discovering and preserving relics and landmarks, especially of the Old Oregon Trail. Book Early Oregon

Download or read book Early Oregon written by George E. Cole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Oregon: Jottings of Personal Recollections of a Pioneer of 1850 During the month of October, 1850, there were fitted out in San Francisco three brigs, suitable for carrying passengers, which were advertised for sailing during that month to the mouth of the Umpqua river. No American vessel had ever entered that port before. The mines had been discovered in northern California, and a company had been organized in San Francisco to locate townsites on the Umpqua river. The townsite at the mouth of the river was called Umpqua City. Up the river at the head of navigation was Scottsburg; farther up, near the site of the post of the Hudson Bay Company, was Elkton, and still farther up, on the trail from Oregon to California, was Winchester. This route was intended to reach the northern California mines. Flaming hand-bills were posted showing the advantages of the route and advertising the cities as before named. Plats of these new cities were made out, and lots were offered for sale at public auction at real estate offices in San Francisco. Farms were offered for sale, but there were few buyers. My father alone succeeded in selling his farm, and no doubt at a great sacrifice. As I remember, my father received about $3000 for 160 acres of finest farming land and 40 acres of timber land in the San gamon river bottom. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Centennial History of Oregon, 1811-1912, Vol. 2: Illustrated In May, 1901, Mr. Thompson left home for a trip around the world, but had pro ceeded eastward only as far as Iowa when he became ill and was obliged to return home. He never fully recovered and passed away on the 14th of December, 1901. The press oi the entire country commented upon his death in terms of commendation and of respect. Said one of the journals of Walla Walla, Washington: The Walla Walla friends of the late D. P. Thompson of Portland are pro foundly grieved to learn of his death. Mr. Thompson was for years during his lifetime connected with the financial institutions of Walla Walla and had always taken a lively interest in the progress of the Garden city. He was a man highly respected by everyone who knew him. He acquired wealth and ih fluence in both public and private life by reason of his close application to work and his constant effort to progress in all walks of life. He came to the Pacific coast a pioneer and by his own indomitable will and courage, in the face of obstacles, made his mark among his fellowmen. Mr. Thompson was a most generous man. His benevolence fostered many good works and his helpful aid tided many an institu tion and individual over a critical period. The Oregonian said of him: Occasionally a man carves out a fortune by dint of toil and the exercise of foresight and then proceeds to make his fellowmen the better for his hav ing lived and grown rich. David P. Thomp son was of this class. His life is to be cited as an example of the possibilities of human nature untarnished by the corrupting influ ence of gold. His was a career that Spurs on young men to strive for the better part. D. P. Thompson stood for higher education. His influence went for the upbuilding of all institutions that make for mind improve ment. He was distinctively a friend of the younger generation who aspire to climb the ladder of intellectual achievement. Oregon owes him a debt of gracious memory for what he did for the schools of the state. And in what other sphere does not the same apply?
