This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Indian Mutiny] Colonel MacKenzie was only a young subaltern of three years’ service when the great Sepoy Mutiny broke out in 1857. His regiment, the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry stationed in Meerut, was one of the worst effected and he and his fellow British officers had to fight for their lives as the native soldiers rioted. Having escaped narrowly from his erstwhile soldiers he rallied to the main garrison in Meerut, the rebels fled toward Delhi. He joined in the expedition to re-capture Delhi and relates his recollections with great spirit, there was no rest for the gallant young lieutenant as he joined in the effort to relieve Lucknow. During the last of the fighting his commanding officer, Captain Sanford, was killed and MacKenzie relates his hero’s death with great empathy. After the mutiny MacKenzie achieved the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1878 and led his troops in the Second Afghan War, 1879-80. Promoted to full colonel four years later, he served as honorary ADC to Lansdowne, the Viceroy of India.

Book A Pioneer s Search for an Ideal Home

Download or read book A Pioneer s Search for an Ideal Home written by Phoebe Goodell Judson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-02 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phoebe Judson was a young bride in 1853 when she and her husband crossed the plains from Ohio to the Puget Sound area of Washington Territory. She was ninety-five when this book was first published in 1925. The years between were spent in “a pioneer’s search for an ideal home” and in living there, when it was finally found at the head of the Nooksack River, almost on the Canadian border. Phoebe Judson’s account of the journey west is based on daily diary entries detailing her fear, excitement, and exhaustion. At the end of the trail, the Judsons encountered hardships aplenty, causing them to abandon a farm and business in Olympia before their arrival in the Nooksack Valley. During the Indian Wars they holed up in a fort at Claquato. In time, Phoebe overcame her fear of the Indians, learned the Chinook language, and won their friendship. All this is told in vivid detail by a woman of great dignity and charm whom readers will long remember. Susan Armitage, professor of history at Washington State University, calls A Pioneer’s Search for an Ideal Home a “classic pioneering account,” important for its woman’s point of view.

Book Pioneer Reminiscences Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pioneer Reminiscences Classic Reprint written by Alexander Sinclair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneer Reminiscences My father said that Cape Colony was the finest country he ever saw. The farmers had large ranches with immense flocks of cattle and sheep, and plenty of slaves to take care of them. In some places the wolves were so plentiful in the mountains that they had to gather the cattle in large flocks in the evening and kindle fires at certain distances, with slaves keeping up the fires all night to save the cattle from the wolves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Then and Now; Or Thirty-Six Years in the Rockies: Personal Reminiscences of Some of the First Pioneers of the State of Montana, Indians and Indian Wars, the Past and Present of the Rocky Mountain Country, 1864-1900 It may not be out of place to explain how this book came to find its way into print. It was written for my little daughter, in the form of letters at various times, and not intended for publication, but many friends after reading them insisted that they should be published. One said: You must not wait until you are dead before these letters are given to the world. As my desire is, by the grace of God, to live many years yet, I now present these letters to the reader, supplemented by others from old time friends who braved the perils and dangers of pioneer life; and as they are intended to be a part of the history of this great state, care has been taken to keep strictly to the truth.
