Book Elastic Scattering of Pions from Tritium and sup 3 He in the Backward Hemisphere in the Region of the Delta sub 33 1232 Resonance

Download or read book Elastic Scattering of Pions from Tritium and sup 3 He in the Backward Hemisphere in the Region of the Delta sub 33 1232 Resonance written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several experiments have measured nominally-charge-symmetric scattering of pions from tritium ([sup 3]H) and [sup 3]He. These experiments have covered incident pion energies from 142 MeV to 295 MeV and scattering angles up to 110[degrees] in the laboratory. The results have been used to study charge-symmetry breaking and nuclear scattering systematics. In the work I have extended these measurements to angles near 180[degrees] for pion energies of 142 MeV, 180 MeV, 220 MeV, and 256 MeV, which bracket the [Delta][sub 33] pion-nucleon resonance. This is the most extensive set of [pi]T and [pi][sup 3]He data in this kinematical region. It will allow tests of scattering theory of pion-nucleus interactions and charge-symmetry breaking in back-angle scattering, and, within the limits of these two theories, it may help improve our understanding of the structure of these nuclei.

Book Pion Elastic Scattering from Polarized Sup 13 C in the Energy Region of the 3 3 Resonance

Download or read book Pion Elastic Scattering from Polarized Sup 13 C in the Energy Region of the 3 3 Resonance written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work we measured the angular distributions of the analyzing power and the differential cross section at one energy below and one energy above the (3,3) resonance. A search for the predicted large asymmetries at momentum transfers near the second minimum of the differential cross sections was also performed at several energies across the resonance. Most of the data have been analyzed. One, for T{sub {pi}} = 162 MeV, is currently in progress.

Book Pion pion Scattering Analysis of 205 GeV c Pi P Interactions in the NAL 30 inch Hydrogen Bubble Chamber

Download or read book Pion pion Scattering Analysis of 205 GeV c Pi P Interactions in the NAL 30 inch Hydrogen Bubble Chamber written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of experiments at beam momenta below ≈ 25 GeV/c have yielded results on?−? and?−?− scattering cross sections, obtained by modified Chew-Low extrapolation techniques applied to the reactions?−p →?°?+−. They have applied these same techniques to a small sample (169 events) of the reaction?−p → p?+?−?− obtained from a 48,000-photo exposure of the NAL 30-inch hydrogen bubble chamber to a 205 GeV?− beam. The statistics are insufficient to test the validity of the analysis at these high energies but they find?−?+ and?−?− elastic scattering cross sections in the M{sub?{sup {+-}}?−} ≈ 3 GeV. Results will be presented of an attempt to obtain inelastic and total?{pi} scattering cross-section estimates under similar assumptions.

Book Reaction pi N yields pi pi N Near Threshold

Download or read book Reaction pi N yields pi pi N Near Threshold written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The LAMPF E1179 experiment used the [pi][sup 0] spectrometer and an array of charged particle range counters to detect and record [pi][sup +][pi][sup 0], [pi][sup 0]p, and [pi][sup +][pi][sup 0]p coincidences following the reaction [pi][sup +]p [yields] [pi][sup 0][pi][sup +]p near threshold. The total cross sections for single pion production were measured at the incident pion kinetic energies 190, 200, 220, 240, and 260 MeV. Absolute normalizations were fixed by measuring [pi][sup +]p elastic scattering at 260 MeV. A detailed analysis of the [pi][sup 0] detection efficiency was performed using cosmic ray calibrations and pion single charge exchange measurements with a 30 MeV [pi][sup [minus]] beam. All published data on [pi]N [yields] [pi][pi]N, including our results, are simultaneously fitted to yield a common chiral symmetry breaking parameter [xi] =[minus]0.25[plus-minus]0.10. The threshold matrix element [vert-bar][alpha][sub 0]([pi][sup 0][pi][sup +]p)[vert-bar] determined by linear extrapolation yields the value of the s-wave isospin-2 [pi][pi] scattering length [alpha][sub 0][sup 2]([pi][pi]) = [minus]0.041[plus-minus]0.003 m[sub [pi]][sup [minus]1], within the framework of soft-pion theory.

Book Large Angle Elastic and Inelastic Scattering of Pi and Pi from 28 Si and 40 Ca

Download or read book Large Angle Elastic and Inelastic Scattering of Pi and Pi from 28 Si and 40 Ca written by Michael P. Snell and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential cross sections were measured for Pi(+) and Pi( - ) elastic scattering of Calcium 40 and Silicon 28 at incident pion energies ranging from 100 to 260 MeV at a scattering angle of 175 degs. Differential cross sections were also measured for Pi(+) and Pi( - ) inelastic scattering to the 2(+), 1.78 MeV, 4(+), 4.62 MeV, and 3( - ) 6.88 MeV states of 28Si at incident pion energies of 130, 180, and 226 MeV and scattering angles between 115 degs. and 175 degs. in 6 degs. increments. The data are compared to previously obtained forward angle data through 120 degs. and agree quite well. The data show a generally flat angular dependence for angles greater than 100 degs. Several theoretical codes are reviewed for their ability to predict large angle scattering. Coordinate-space and momentum-space models generally thought to be sufficient for predicting forward angle scattering have proved to be inappropriate for use at large angles. A new phenomenological delta-hole model, currently under modification, shows a greatly enhanced ability to predict scattering at back angles. Theses. (aw).

Book Pi sup p ELASTIC SCATTERING AND SINGLE PION PRODUCTION AT 0 939 BEV c thesis

Download or read book Pi sup p ELASTIC SCATTERING AND SINGLE PION PRODUCTION AT 0 939 BEV c thesis written by and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of pi /sup -/-p elastic scattering and singlepion production nt 0.939 Bev/c is reported. Fivehundred and forty two-prong interactions in the 10-in. UCRL liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber were classified. Emphasis is given the methods used in the kinematic classification of events. The total cross section for pi /sup -/-p interactions is found to be 53.3 plus or minus 2.4 mb. The elastic-scattering cross section is 21.0 plus or minus 1.1 mb. The elastic differential cross section displays a narrow diffraction peak in the forward direction. In the centerof-mass system, 35.6% of the elastic events have pion scatters into the backward hemisphere. In single-pion production the ratio of the number of pi /sup +/ to pi /sup 0/ productions is 2.49. The momentum distributions of the charged particles do not correspond to the phase-space distributions predicted. (auth).

Book A Study of the Reaction Pi p Yields Delta rho 0 with Incoming Pion Momentum of 5 8 GeV c

Download or read book A Study of the Reaction Pi p Yields Delta rho 0 with Incoming Pion Momentum of 5 8 GeV c written by Thomas Francis Ramos and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sample of 2613 events of the type pi(+)p yields pi(+)pi(+)pi( - ) were extracted, using the bubble chamber photographs measured by the PEPR (Precision Encoding and Pattern Recognition) point guidance system. The data was reduced using the standard TVGP, SQUAW, and ARROW programs. The sample of four-prong four-constraint events was analyzed under two separate processes, a cluster analysis using the rapidity variable, and a modified Prism Plot analysis using longitudinally Lorentz invariant parameters. Results of the two analyses in obtaining a sample of pi(+)p yields Delta(++)rho(0) events were compared. Total cross sections for the reactions pi(+ or - )p yields pi(+ or - )pi(+)pi( - ) and the partial cross section for the Delta(++)rho(0) channel were given. Comparisons between the Prism Plot data and the predictions of the Dar- Watts-Weisskopf Absorption Model were made. Spin density matrix elements were calculated and studied. The absorption parameters R(s) and d(s) were determined. Evidence that these absorption radii are not independent of the exchange mechanism is introduced.
