Book excerpt: For nearly three centuries Leonardo da Vinci's work was known primarily through the abridged version of his Treatise on Painting, first published in Paris in 1651 and soon translated into all the major European languages. Here for the first time is a study that examines the historical reception of this vastly influential text. This collection charts the varied interpretations of Leonardo's ideas in French, Italian, Spanish, English, German, Dutch, Flemish, Greek, and Polish speaking environments where the Trattato was an important resource for the academic instruction of artists, one of the key sources drawn upon by art theorists, and widely read by a diverse network of artists, architects, biographers, natural philosophers, translators, astronomers, publishers, engineers, theologians, aristocrats, lawyers, politicians, entrepreneurs, and collectors. The cross-cultural approach employed here demonstrates that Leonardo's Treatise on Painting is an ideal case study through which to chart the institutionalization of art in Europe and beyond for 400 years. The volume includes original essays by scholars studying a wide variety of national and institutional settings. The coherence of the volume is established by the shared subject matter and interpretative aim: to understand how Leonardo's ideas were used. With its focus on the active reception of an important text overlooked in studies of the artist's solitary genius, the collection takes Leonardo studies to a new level of historical inquiry. Leonardo da Vinci's most significant contribution to Western art was his interpretation of painting as a science grounded in geometry and direct observation of nature. One of the most important questions to emerge from this study is, what enabled the same text to produce so many different styles of painting?

Book The Late Paintings of Vel uez

Download or read book The Late Paintings of Vel uez written by Giles Knox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The startling conclusion of The Late Paintings of Vel?uez is that Diego Vel?uez painted two of his most famous works, The Spinners and Las Meninas, as theoretically informed manifestos of painterly brushwork. As a pair, Giles Knox argues, the two paintings form a learned retort to the prevailing critical disdain for the painterly. Knox presents a Vel?uez who was much more aware of the art theory of his era than previously acknowledged, leading him to reinterpret Las Meninas and The Spinners as representing together a polemically charged celebration of the "handedness" of painting. Knox removes Vel?uez from his Iberian isolation and seeks to recover his highly self-conscious attempt to carve out a place for himself within the history of European painting as a whole. The Late Paintings of Vel?uez presents an artist who, like Annibale Carracci, Poussin, Rembrandt, and Vermeer was not only aware of contemporary theoretical writings on art, but also able to translate that knowledge and understanding into a distinctive and personal theory of painting. In Las Meninas and The Spinners, Vel?uez propounded this theory with paint, not words. Knox's rethinking of the dynamic relationship between text and image presents a case, not of writing influencing painting, or vice versa, but of the two realms being inextricably bound together. Painterly brushwork presented a challenge to writers on art not just because it was connected too intimately with the base actions of the hand; it was also devilishly hard to describe. By reading Vel?uez's painterly performance as text, Knox deciphers how Vel?uez was able to craft theoretical arguments more compelling and more vivid than any written counterparts.

At a limitless and incomprehensible border, Hector Charles cannot comprehend where he is, who he is, or who he was; but he suspects that he will one day be judged by a divine higher power and even by himself. Hector is descending into hellish depths as he is forced to systematically relive each of his actions, actions he tries to hide at all costs and longs to forget. As he is unable to discern his real identity in this inanimate position, he suffers the consequences that result from the intrinsic passion that brought him to an end that neither he nor all who knew him in life could have foreseen. I would like to add a credit for the artist Jorge Posada, who provided his paintings for the covers of both books. Covers by Colombian artist Jorge Posada http://www.jorgeposada-art.com

Book excerpt: Examining the historical reception of Leonardo's Treatise on Painting in a cross-cultural framework, this collection represents the first attempt to chart the influence of the work, an important resource for the academic instruction of artists through four centuries and widely read by intellectuals and lovers of art for three centuries, when Leonardo's ideas and art were known almost exclusively through his book. The volume, dealing specifically with the reception and influence of the artist's ideas, takes Leonardo studies to a new level of historical inquiry.

Book Subject Headings for School and Public Libraries

Download or read book Subject Headings for School and Public Libraries written by Joanna F. Fountain and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-01-16 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For public and school libraries, this resource reflects recent changes in Library of Congress subject headings and authority files, and provides bilingual information essential to reference librarians and catalogers serving Spanish speakers. Libraries must provide better access to their collections for all users, including Spanish-language materials. The American Library Association has recognized this increasing need. Subject Headings for School and Public Libraries: Bilingual Fourth Edition is the only resource available that provides both authorized and reference entries in English and Spanish. A first-check source for the most frequently used headings needed in school and public libraries, this book incorporates thousands of new and revised entries to assist in applying LCSH and CSH headings. Of the approximately 30,000 headings listed, most include cross-references, and all of the cross-reference terms are translated. MARC21 tags are included for all authorized entries to simplify entering them into computerized catalogs, while indexes to all headings and free-floating subdivisions are provided in translation from Spanish to English. This book gives librarians access to accurate translations of the subject terms printed in books published and cataloged in English-speaking countries—invaluable information in settings with Spanish-speaking patrons.

Book Radical Form

Download or read book Radical Form written by Megan A. Sullivan and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely reassessment of some of the most daring projects of abstraction from South America. Emphasizing the open-ended and self-critical nature of the projects of abstraction in South America from the 1930s through the mid-1960s, this important new volume focuses on the artistic practices of Joaquín Torres-García, Tomás Maldonado, Alejandro Otero, and Lygia Clark. Megan A. Sullivan positions the adoption of modernist abstraction by South American artists as part of a larger critique of the economic and social transformations caused by Latin America’s state-led programs of rapid industrialization. Sullivan thoughtfully explores the diverse ways this skepticism of modernization and social and political change was expressed. Ultimately, the book makes it clear that abstraction in South America was understood not as an artistic style to be followed but as a means to imagine a universalist mode of art, a catalyst for individual and collective agency, and a way to express a vision of a better future for South American society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This catalogue is a compilation of paintings (particularly from painters José Campeche y Jordán (1751-1809) and Francisco Manuel Oller y Cestero (1833-1917)) part of the vast collection of art that the ICP has treasured for more than a century, since its foundation in 1955. "Beginning with the first acquisition through the purchase of a work by José Campeche in February of 1959 and up to the last two works acquired in 1977, the Institute has gathered about twenty-four pieces of unique testimonial value in more than one case. With this number, it surpasses the best-known series until then: the Campeche canvases in the Archbishop's palace in San Juan, of which there are twenty."--P. xiii.
