Book excerpt: This book is a unique and important compendium of some of the rare literature in Rose History, including the first-ever full English translation of the major written works of Jean-Pierre Vibert, pieces by him on culture, hybridization, nomenclature, exhibiting, and unsavory practices, as well as cutting-edge chapters by author and translator Brent C. Dickerson on the previously unknown first phase of many of the most significant rose classes, including Hybrid Teas, Bourbons, Damask Perpetuals, Chinas, Hybrid Perpetuals, Hybrid Chinas, and much much more! The reader will join in the probings and controversies as Rose Progress struggles with a proud heart and high hopes through the rich days when Old Roses were king. Dickerson's previous works *The Old Rose Advisor* and *The Old Rose Adventurer* revolutionized the study of Old Roses; this book,*The Old Rose Informant*, completes the trilogy and provides the capstone to his acclaimed and long-continued work. As is the case with few books in the field, the publication of *The Old Rose Informant*, with its humor, its new data, its many chapters of otherwise unavailable material, and its spirited and insightful looks at Rose Progress, is an important event in Gardening Literature. Also published by iuniverse is the author's useful and necessary research aid *Roll-Call: The Old Rose Breeder*.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Thompson (1770-1857) is considered by many to have been the most important surveyor of North America. His achievements - mapping the Saskatchewan River, the great bend of the Missouri River, the Great Lakes and the headwaters of the Mississippi as well as the Columbia watershed - are the stuff of legend. Late in life Thompson wrote a retrospective memoir of his explorations, but the best way to understand his years in the fur trade is by reading his journals. With the publication of David Thompson's Columbia Journals Barbara Belyea makes this possible. Documenting the Northwest Company's efforts to find trade routes across the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Columbia Journals also reveals Thompson's personal interest in mapping the great river of the West sought by generations of explorers. His accounts provide a detailed picture of the fur business and remind us to what extent the territory he explored has been transformed by settlement, roads, and hydroelectric dams. Thompson's journals trace the fur trade's westernmost expansion while his hand-drawn maps preserve a contemporary image of the country he explored. The extensive notes that accompany the Columbia Journals provide a documentary context for Thompson's own account. Details of Thompson's manuscript maps are included, as is the work of other cartographers of the period. By placing Thompson's work in the context of the fur-trade and comparing his accomplishments with those of his contemporaries, Belyea shows what makes David Thompson truly remarkable and worthy of attention two hundred years after his surveys of the Columbia River.

Book Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney Volume 1

Download or read book Early Journals and Letters of Fanny Burney Volume 1 written by Lars E. Troide and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1988-05-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One is the first of a projected twelve-volume edition of Burney's early journals and letters and covers the years 1768-73. This edition reproduces her earliest journals in their original form, replacing omitted and altered passages. It shows her development as an artist and contains typically vivid sketches of her family, friends, and acquaintances in London and the country. Further volumes will cover the so-called "Streatham Years" (1778-86, 4 vols.) and "Court Years" (1786-91, 6 vols.). These will carry her through the period of her greatest fame as the author of the novels Evelina (1778) and Cecilia (1782), and will end with her exit from the Court of King George III and Queen Charlotte after five exhausting years of service to the Queen as Second Keeper of the Robes. Eighteenth-century scholars generally regard Fanny's early journals as her freshest and most appealing. This edition complements Joyce Hemlow's Oxford edition of Burney's letters and journals from 1791 to 1840 (12 vols., Oxford, 1972-84). While the early journals have been printed before, Lars Troide's edition will provide the first full text of Fanny's early journals, accompanied by thorough and accurate annotations which fully explicate the context in which the journals were written.

Book excerpt: NANCY JOY HEFRON is a writer, emotional life coach, and teacher who lives in Mount Vernon, Iowa with her husband Mark on a beautiful acreage they fondly call El Shaddai. Through her company, Heartlights, Nancy Joy offers emotional healing retreats, sacred journeys and private sessions. She is the creator of a radio series called "It's all About You" and a self-help column by the same name. Find out more about Nancy Joy and her work at www.heartlights.net. ***About the book*** Rose Jocelyn Winston is a prominent "fifty-something" therapist in her community, and yet she begins to realize her life is not all that rosy. Her only daughter, Emily, has rejected her, and she has found that all her attempts to help her clients seem to be falling flat. In the midst of her mid-life crises she prays for help and has a powerful dream that takes her on an incredible journey. She travels, eventually, to the Yucatan, where two special dolphins and a Spirit guide help her uncover the doorway to true emotional healing and conscious compassion. On her journey, Rose discovers this life-changing formula that brings the truth of emotions into perspective, providing an incredible life tool for everyone. ***A message from the author*** After over twenty years as a spiritual teacher following the emotional clues of life, I felt strongly that it was time to begin to share what I had learned along the way to a wider audience. For three years I tried writing a self-help book to no avail. I felt that no form of teaching is more life changing than for the reader to "feel" what the words were saying. So I set out to write a teaching novel. From the first day I began to write, Rose's story just spilled out of my heart and soul. I easily birthed The Wounded Heart, and I know there will be more to come. -NJH
