Download or read book Pink written by Gus Van Sant and published by Anchor. This book was released on 1998-11-10 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gus Van Sant goes from auteur to author in an brilliant, inventive, and endlessly entertaining first novel that reads like a Warholian mix of Kurt Vonnegut and Tom Robbins. In the town of Sasquatch, Oregon, Spunky Davis, middle-aged maker of infomercials, is trying to find his next assignment, finish the screenplay that he hopes will bring him Hollywood glory, and deal with the death of his friend and favorite infomercial presenter, teen idol Felix Arroyo. Enter two young aspiring filmmakers, Jack and Matt, whom Spunky finds strangely familiar--especially as Jack bears an uncanny resemblance to the late Felix. But Jack and Matt are not what they appear to be; they are messengers from a dimension beyond time known as Pink, and they invite Spunky to join them on their voyage of transcendence and recovery. Using a delirious array of voices signified by different typefaces, a flip cartoon that animates the novel's action, footnotes and line drawings, Gus Van Sant turns the novel into an explosively visual experience, a captivating combination of texture and text. As original and involving as any of Van Sant's films, Pink is both a hip, comic deconstruction of our image-obsessed culture and a genuinely tender story on the classic themes of love, time, and loss.

Download or read book Health Care Policy in Contemporary America written by Hamilton Cravens and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have benefited from substantial improvements in health since the end of World War II. They live longer and grow taller; they have the safest and cheapest food supply on the planet; they have seen virtually all childhood diseases brought under control. Yet concerns about health remain widespread today. Cancer seems to be everywhere; autoimmune, nervous, and environmental diseases have reached pandemic proportions; medical malpractice suits have proliferated. How can we have received so many benefits while still being as worried as ever about our health and the health care system established to ensure and extend those benefits? The historical perspective provided by the essays in this volume helps answer this question by identifying two points of significant change in health care policy. Beginning in the 1950s there emerged a subtle yet critical reconceptualization as the individual rather than the group came to figure prominently as the central policy-making unit. Then in the late 1960s a palpable sense of limits rendered the individualism of the previous decade into a Malthusian formulation: the greater the access or benefits that any one person received, the less others could get. Besides tracing these patterns in health care development, the essays also show how traditional notions of expertise have been affected by the changes. Contributors are Amy Sue Bix, Hamilton Cravens, Gerald N. Grob, Alan I Marcus, Diane Paul, David Rosner and Gerald Markowitz, and James Harvey Young.
Download or read book The Pink Motel written by Carol Ryrie Brink and published by Echo Point Books & Media, LLC. This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel Back to a Time of Innocence and Adventure "Until Kirby Mellen was ten nothing very exciting had ever happened to him or his father or his mother or his little sister Bitsy." All of this changes very suddenly with the death of far-distant Uncle Hiram, who leaves his Florida motel-painted pink-to Kirby's mom. People like the Mellens, from Minnesota, do not paint their buildings pink. And these seven buildings are not just quietly pink-they are outrageously PINK. "It was pinker than Kirby's necktie or Bitsy's hair ribbon. It was pink, pink, PINK." It isn't long after the Mellens arrive at the motel that things go even more off kilter with regulars (and some irregulars) taking up residence in the cottages. There's old Miss Ferry who talks to crabs and other beach creatures, Marvello the magician, the two gangsters Locke and Black, and jolly Mr. Carver, who has a knack for uncovering the secrets left by Uncle Hiram. Carol Ryrie Brink's classic children's tale evokes a time of innocence and adventure in the lives of the Mellen children and their friends. Written long before the introduction of the internet, it speaks of people solving problems through understanding and coming together. With delightful illustrations by Sheila Greenwald, this story will capture the imagination of children of all ages.
