Book Pine Valley

Download or read book Pine Valley written by Robert Adams and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Pine Valley

Download or read book Pine Valley written by Hester-Jane Cogswell and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologists and historians have long known that houses whisper about their past. There is one such house in Pine Valley, north of Colorado Springs, Colorado. It's now the permanent residence of the presiding Commandant of Cadets of the U.S. Air Force Academy. But this house, its history, inhabitants, neighbors, and the community involvement of those people give a unique and almost time-lapse view of the history of Colorado Springs and the U.S. Air Force Academy. From frontier buffalo hunting and Indian raids in the Pikes Peak region to the U.S. Air Force Academy today, Pine Valley ties the events to the three successive owners of the home. Author Hester-Jane Cogswell narrates the story of the people and incidents that shaped Colorado Springs, including details about the early Jewel City of Pikes Peak, backgrounds of the Lennox and Otis families, and information about Pine Valley neighbors and families. Through early letters, photos, diaries, and interviews conducted by Cogswell, Pine Valley presents a unique and personal history of the beautiful and fascinating Pikes Peak region.

Book excerpt: Pioneer settlers began arriving in Pine Creek Valley after the Revolutionary War, drawn to the pristine wilderness filled with towering white pines and hemlocks. In the 1880s, descendants of those settlers began extensive lumbering operations aided greatly by the arrival of the railroad through the valley. Additional logging railroads were rapidly constructed up the tributary runs to the great stands of trees. Pine Creek's villages flourished, with both large and small sawmills buzzing. Around 1910, when the great lumbering days ended, many of the village populations plummeted. Throughout the 20th century and into today, the area remains a popular tourist destination for fishing, hunting, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Book The Geology of the Central Virgin River Basin Southwestern Utah and Its Relation to Ground water Conditions

Download or read book The Geology of the Central Virgin River Basin Southwestern Utah and Its Relation to Ground water Conditions written by Hugh A. Hurlow and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the geology of the central Virgin River basin in southwestern Utah, and characterizes the structure and lithology of the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone and the thickness and stratigraphy of Quaternary-late Tertiary unconsolidated deposits, the two main aquifers in the region. Southwestern Utah has experienced rapid population growth and increased demand on water supplies during the past 15 years, and the purpose of this report is to better define the ground-water resources of the area. Ground water provides approximately half of the public water supply in southwestern Utah, so future decisions regarding water use must be based on careful geologic characterization of the aquifers and their relation to the regional hydrologic system. The results of this study will be applied to ground-water modeling, evaluating regional and local hydrogeologic conditions, and assessing sites for development of ground water. 53 pages + 7 plates

Book The Kingdom of Golf in America

Download or read book The Kingdom of Golf in America written by Richard J. Moss and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For golf’s true enthusiasts, the game is far more—and far more complex—than a simple hobby, commodity, or slice of the sports industry. It is a physical and mental place to be, a community. It has a history, a hierarchy, laws, a language, and a literature. And in Richard J. Moss, it has a chronicler. From its beginnings in the northeastern United States in the 1880s, golf has seen its popularity, and its fortunes, wax and wane, affected by politics and economics, reflecting tensions between aristocratic and democratic impulses. The Kingdom of Golf in America traces these ups and downs, ins and outs, in the growth of golf as a community. Moss describes the development of the private club and public course and the impact of wealth and the consumer culture on those who play golf and those who watch. He shows that factors like race, gender, technology, suburbanization, and the transformation of the South that shaped the nation also shaped golf. The result is a unique, and uniquely entertaining, work of cultural history that shows us golf as a community whose story resonates far beyond the confines of the course. Purchase the audio edition.
