Book excerpt: As Good Eats enjoys its 14th season on the Food Network, its popularity continues unabated. Fans can't get enough of Alton Brown's wildly inventive, science-geeky, food-loving spirit. It's no wonder, then, that the first two volumes in STC's Good Eats series were New York Times bestsellers. Like Volumes 1 and 2, Good Eats 3: The Later Years packs a bounty of information and entertainment between its covers. More than 200 recipes are accompanied by hundreds of photographs, drawings, and stills from the show, as well as lots of science-of-food facts, cooking tips, food trivia, and behind-the-scenes glimpses. In chapters devoted to everything from pomegranates to pretzels, mincemeat to molasses, Alton delivers delicious recipes along with fascinating background in a book that's as fun to read as it is to cook from. Good Eats 3 will be a must-have addition to the bookshelves and kitchen counters of Alton lovers everywhere. Praise for Good Eats 3: The Later Years: "A victory lap" --Chicago Tribune "The hefty book is filled with health information and tips on how to become a better home cook, all told in the breezy style that made Alton Brown's show so accessible and fun. Plus there is a pattern and stickers for making sock puppets. She was wonderful, but Julia Child never taught you how to make a sock puppet, did she?" --Oregonian "Alton's cookbooks are non-traditional to say the least. In addition to great recipes, they're loaded with humor, science, and great tips on selecting ingredients." --Northeast Flavor magazine "Much like Good Eats the show, the book can carry many labels--or, more to the point, defy labels altogether." --The Record "His best yet." --LAWeekly.com

Download or read book The Use of Words in Context written by John W. Black and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1985-11-30 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Speech Situation is a term worn with age in the teaching of public speaking in America. That it is comprised of occasion, speaker, and topic is a gross oversimplification. It also includes challenge, anxiety, emotion, fear, responsibility, faults of memory, and instants of pride. Out of the circumstances arise an increase in heart rate, a change in blood pressure, an abnormal pattern of breathing, a noticeable build up in perspiration, and an ongoing evaluation. For students this may be merely a grade or perhaps a series of evaluative remarks, possibly addressed both to the speaker and the other participants, the audience. It may entail a replaying of a record of the speech, indeed a videotape. Most important is the lasting impression that remains with all of the participants. What of the vocabulary of the speaker under the circumstances of the speech situation? This speaker - in the major portions of this work we may say, "this young man" - has spent time seeking an appropriate topic. He has outlined a composition around a central idea or thesis. He has marshaled evidence, details. He has framed an opening paragraph. He has been admonished not to give an essay, but to strive for audience contact, interpersonal communication. He makes his audible approach through his vocabulary and accompanying phonology. Under the tension, the speaker repeats; he adds meaningless vocalizations in periods that might logically be pauses. There are slips of the tongue. At worst, failing, he withdraws to await another day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • 125 recipes for grain-free, dairy-free, and gluten-free comfort food dishes for holidays and special occasions NAMED ONE OF THE FIVE BEST GLUTEN-FREE COOKBOOKS OF ALL TIME BY MINDBODYGREEN When people adopt a new diet for health or personal reasons, they worry most about the parties, holidays, and events with strong food traditions, fearing their fond memories will be lost along with the newly eliminated food groups. After suffering for years with a debilitating autoimmune disease and missing many of these special occasions herself, Danielle Walker has revived the joy that cooking for holidays can bring in Danielle Walker's Against All Grain Celebrations, a collection of recipes and menus for twelve special occasions throughout the year. Featuring a variety of birthday cakes, finger foods to serve at a baby or bridal shower, and re-creations of backyard barbecue standards like peach cobbler and corn bread, Danielle includes all of the classics. There’s a full Thanksgiving spread—complete with turkey and stuffing, creamy green bean casserole, and pies—and menus for Christmas dinner; a New Year's Eve cocktail party and Easter brunch are covered, along with suggestions for beverages and cocktails and the all-important desserts. Recipes can be mixed and matched among the various occasions, and many of the dishes are simple enough for everyday cooking. Stunning full-color photographs of every dish make browsing the pages as delightful as cooking the recipes, and beautiful party images provide approachable and creative entertaining ideas. Making recipes using unfamiliar ingredients can cause anxiety, and while trying a new menu on a regular weeknight leaves some room for error, the meal simply cannot fail when you have a table full of guests celebrating a special occasion. Danielle has transformed her most cherished family traditions into trustworthy recipes you can feel confident serving, whether you’re hosting a special guest with food allergies, or cooking for a crowd of regular grain-eaters.

Book excerpt: Thirty nights. Two hearts. One fate. American Beauty, Book 1 After her parents' tragic deaths, Elisa Snow wanted nothing more than to escape her past. Eighteen and alone, she fled her quaint English village and moved to the United States. A starving science student by day and an artist's muse by night, Elisa has slowly built a new life. She never dreamed she would lose everything again. She's one week from graduation when her visa is unexpectedly denied. Given thirty days to leave the country, she must face the one thing she cannot survive again-saying goodbye and leaving her home. Yet within minutes of her world shattering, she meets a man with the power to piece it back together. After finishing his tour of duty in Iraq, Aiden Hale traded battlefields for boardrooms, becoming one of the most successful venture capitalists in the nation. But all his wealth can't buy him reprieve from the horrific memories of war. The only thing that gives him peace is a painting of Elisa. Drawn together by their invisible wounds, they begin a passionate affair as they race against the clock to defy their pasts-and fight for their future. Earlier versions of this book were posted on the author's blog under the titles of The Master's Muse and 30 Nights of Snow, using the pen name Ani Surnois, and the book has since been extensively edited.
